Life In The Body News and Notes for the : Shelbyville Church of Christ May 28, 2017 The Highest Ransom Ever Paid A few years ago there was a true story about a man in New York City who was kidnapped. His kidnappers called his wife and asked for $100,000 ransom. She talked them down to $30,000. The story had a happy ending: the man returned home unharmed, the money was recovered, and the kidnappers were caught and sent to jail. But don't you wonder what happened when the man got home and found that his wife got him back for a discount? Calvin Trillin was the writer of this story. He imagined what the negotiations must have been like: "$100,000 for that old guy? You have got to be crazy. Just look at him! Look at that gut! You want $100,000 for that? You've got to be kidding. Give me a break here. $30,000 is my top offer." I can sympathize with the kidnapped man because I wonder how much the people in my life think that I'm worth. But I am flattered beyond description to realize that I was worth enough to God that He was willing to pay the ultimate price for my ransom, my redemption. As Peter put it:
"You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your fathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot." ( I Peter 1:18-19 ) Ultimately, the value of something (or someone) is determined by how much someone is willing to pay for it. A piece of art that may be worth millions of dollars to someone else may be worth less than a hundred dollars to me. The worth of something is determined by how much we're willing to pay for it. What that means is that we are of tremendous value to God. He didn't quibble about the price, but was willing to pay the full ransom amount -- the highest ransom ever paid! -- Alan Smith Stick Out Your Tongue One of the first things a physician says when he examines a patient is, Stick out your tongue. It is often possible to make a diagnosis just by looking inside a person s mouth. Some diseases can be detected by the tongue s appearance. This is even more evident as a test of spiritual health. A person s speech reveals what is going on inside. Jesus said, Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34). The apostle Peter, on the night Jesus was arrested, made the mistake of opening his mouth. When he spoke, some of the bystanders recognized his dialect and said, Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you (Matthew 26:73). Although he tried to deny their accusation, his speech revealed who he really was. Our speech tells much about us. Our topics of discussion point to our chief interests in life; for we talk about the things we love the most. And our conversation reveals our eternal destination, for travelers on the way to heaven will speak the language of Glory, while travelers to hell will speak the language of the pit. What is our tongue saying about us? A word from our mouth speaks volumes about our heart. Steve Preston
Proclaim His Death For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes. I Corinthians 11:26 Jesus directed all His disciples to go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to everyone. There are many ways for us to reach the lost with the message of Jesus, but did you ever think that we could do it by participating in the Lord's supper? God's word reminds us that when we eat the bread and drink the fruit of the vine to remember the Lord's death and until He comes, it is a word picture of His mission to save the world. Let's be sure to tell lost souls about our sacred communion. Talking about It may open the door to proclaim the gospel to a lost and dying world. D.
