SUNDAY, JANUARY15, 2017 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME But as I say, I did not recognize Him. The one who sent me to baptize with water told me: When you see the Spirit descend and rest on someone, it is He who is to baptize with the Holy Spirit. Now I have seen for myself, and have testified, This is God s chosen One. A logo or trademark makes it easy to recognize a product. The blue and white sari of St. Teresa of Calcutta or the gentle smile of Pope Francis leave no doubt of whom we speak. A familiar melody or words from the scripture often bring joy to our ears. They stay with us. When John the Baptist said he did not at first recognize Christ until another sign was offered, he continued to look. Ask yourself, where can you find Christ today? How can you discover Him? The Saint of Calcutta found Him in the poor and abandoned. The Holy Father tells us He is out on the streets, in the poor, homeless and needy. Where will you look? SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Isaiah 49:3, 5-6 This reading is a short passage from the second song of the Servant of the Lord. The Lord will show His glory through His servant whose mission is to restore Israel and bring salvation to the ends of the earth. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:1-3 Paul sends greetings to the people of Corinth, who have been called to be holy and consecrated in Christ. Gospel: John 1:29-34 When Jesus visits John, John recognizes Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. John further indicates that Jesus is truly the Messiah and God s chosen One. BEHOLD, THE LAMB OF GOD Our Gospel for today contains one of the most important and misunderstood lines in all of Christian Scriptures. Spying Jesus, John the Baptist says, Behold, the Lamb of God. If you asked someone what this phrase means, you would, most likely, get an answer like this it means that he is gentle and humble and good, like a lamb. But, for a first century Jew, the phrase had little if anything to do with that. It had to do with sacrifice. It meant that Jesus was someone who was destined to be sacrificed as a sin offering to God. John the Baptist s characterization of Jesus as the Lamb of God has to do with temple sacrifice. He will be the one who offers the final and definitive sacrifice which reconciles divinity and humanity. He will offer something to the Father which will deal, finally, with the problem of sin, and, in this, we will find our salvation. Bishop Robert Barron TODAY S SECOND COLLECTION CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY & CATHOLIC COMMUNICATIONS CAMPAIGN Today s Second Collection will provide funding for academic scholarships at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., as well as, for the Catholic Communications Campaign. Catholic University, founded in 1887, is the national university of the Catholic Church in the United States, located in Washington, D.C. More than 4,000 students directly receive scholarship aid from this collection, including many from our diocese. The Catholic Communications Campaign produces and supports media projects that promote Gospel values and bring the Catholic Church s message to television, radio, and other media.

SUNDAY, JANUARY15, 2017 SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME HOLY WATER The custom of placing holy water in a font near the doors of a church is quite old. We make the sign of the cross with blessed water to renew us in the spirit of our Baptism. It signifies our purification before we approach the presence of God in the Church. Holy water also reminds us to pray for health of a soul, body and spirit. Using holy water begs of God a blessing upon those who use it with reverence and devotion. Blessed water is a sacramental. Sacramentals are signs of spiritual effects and favors from God. The Church tells us to use sacramentals like holy water, crucifixes, and rosaries, with reverence and respect. Water is full of mystery. Water, although material, can express something spiritual. Water cleanses us, therefore, water is an apt symbol of interior cleansing and purifying. Water is also a symbol of life. The scarcity of water in many parts of the world lends it a special value. Water is necessary for the existence of plants, animals, and people all around the world. In the New Testament, John the Baptist baptized with water as an outward sign of inner sorrow for personal sins. In the Sacrament of Baptism instituted by Christ, we are washed completely and born again of water and the Spirit. Water symbolizes the washing away of sin, inner purification, and receiving and rising to new life in Christ. Remember to bless yourself devoutly with holy water. As you enter a Catholic Church, this action reminds you of your Baptism and of cleansing yourself before you approach the presence of God. As you leave, bless yourself again and recall that Baptism has marked you for eternal life. When we bless ourselves with holy water, we must always remember that we do it in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. PARISH WINTER BLOOD DRIVE RESULTS At last Sunday s Winter Blood Drive, we collected 33 pints of blood for the New York Blood Center. Thank you to those wonderful donors who responded to the Drive in very cold and icy conditions. Special thanks to our Blood Drive Chairman, John Lennon, who has been running our Drive for the past 11 years and working at it for 26 years! Thanks to the St. Dominic s Council of the Knights of Columbus who cosponsored the Drive and their members who assisted: Joe Moehrle, Sr., Tim Doyle, John Edwards, Tom Zippilli, Tom McKenna, Mike Mulqueen, John Clancy, and Joe Onativia. THE SIGN OF PEACE COLD & FLU SEASON For some people, the Sign of Peace is a wonderful opportunity to express their love and sense of community with handshakes, kisses, and hugs. But with cold and flu season upon us, it is certainly acceptable to nod, wave or speak a greeting of peace. The important thing to remember is that Christ is present in our midst and to acknowledge that presence in one another. The Parish Office will be closed on Monday, January 16 th for Martin Luther King, Jr., Day. For emergencies requiring a Priest, please contact the Parish telephone number, 359-0542. ST. CATHARINE S EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER OPEN HOUSE Our Open House for 3, 4 & 5 year olds will be this Tuesday, January 17 th from 6:30 to 8:00 PM, and Wednesday, January 18 th from 9:00 to 11:00 AM. PRAYING COLLEGE MOMS THIS THURSDAY, JANUARY 19 th, 7-8:30 PM IN THE LOWER PARISH HOUSE Praying College Moms is a brand new ministry here at St. Catharine s. Are you a Parent of a College-age Child, or Junior or Senior in High School? Then, please join us for our first meeting, Thursday, January 19 th, 7:00-8:30 PM in the Lower Parish House. Through mutual support for each other and our children, prayer and friendship, the group is meant to be a pillar of strength and an indispensable resource for all who may be going through the same experiences. We leave our college-age children in God s hands. We pray for them as they begin a new journey in their lives. We pray that they may be safe and successful, living their lives with dignity and honor, being true to the values we have taught them. God, show me how to pray in a way that will make a difference in my child s life. For more information e-mail Noreen Russell at: stcathspcm@gmail.com.

THE 44 th ANNUAL MARCH FOR LIFE WASHINGTON, D.C., JANUARY 27 th Our vision is a world where every human life is valued and protected. The November election brought us not only Pro-Life majorities in both the House and Senate, but a Pro-Life President and Administration that could alter the abortion landscape and roll back many of the pro-abortion moves of the previous years. That s not to say there s not lots of work to do. The theme of this year s March may inspire you, The Power of One, the celebration of each and every one of us and our power to bring change and save lives. Thousands of Pro-Life marchers from all over New York will participate in the 44 rd Annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., Friday, January 27 th. The Rockland bus will depart from St. Francis of Assisi Church in West Nyack for this one-day trip. There will be only one bus this year, so it s first come, first served. For reservations, please call Ann Upton at (845) 735-4379. Seats are $30 for adult, $15 for student. If you are not able to make the trip, please consider making a donation so that others may attend. EWTN will feature live coverage of the March beginning at 9:00 AM on Verizon Fios channel 285 or Cablevision channel 135. The Tabernacle Candle was donated by The Moriarty Family In Loving Memory of Geraldine Foley and Darren Hudson Please remember the names on our Parish Prayer lists in your own private prayers during the week. Prayer is our most powerful tool for healing and we hope that this will allow us to more consciously remember our parishioners who are in poor health, have recently passed, or are in the Armed Forces. Thank you. For everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven. A time to heal We pray for God s tender mercy and loving kindness upon all of our loved ones who have experienced serious health issues. We also pray for all those who assist and care for the sick that God may continue to give them patience, compassion, strength and courage.
