GOD S WAY OF SALVATION

The Suffering Servant Isaiah 52:13-53:13 in the New Testament. Wayne O. Cochran

Transcription:

Chapter One Paid in Full! But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our guilt and iniquities; the chastisement [needful to obtain] peace and well-being for us was upon Him, and with the stripes [that wounded] Him we are healed and made whole. Isaiah 53:5 AMP The very foundation of keeping your healing is based upon knowing and believing that it IS ALWAYS God s will to heal! If this is a new truth for you, I would suggest reading my first book, A Blessed Journey, which goes into great detail on this biblical truth. Good teachers such as Andrew Wommack, Kenneth Copeland, and Keith Moore are also excellent sources to equip you with God s truth regarding healing. God s Perfect Will: Forgiveness, Salvation, Healing and Wholeness With overwhelming awe, I begin Healed For Life with wonderful news! Through the shed blood of Jesus, a restored relationship of harmony and unity between ourselves and God has been made possible! Through God s atoning grace and forgiveness, believers are 17

HEALED FOR LIFE: HOW TO KEEP YOUR HEALING reinstated into righteousness with Him, in spite of our sin. But there s more! When God dealt with the sin issue of man, He dealt with the sickness issue as well! Salvation and healing are conjoined. The work of the cross eliminated the power of sin, and all the effects of sin, including sickness! The intent of this first chapter of Healed For Life is to lay a solid foundation regarding God s perfect will for healing. God s Word is equal to His will. According to His Word, God doesn t leave anything out of His redemptive plan! His plan includes wholeness in every area of our being; spirit, soul, and body! And may the God of peace Himself sanctify you through and through [separate you from profane things, make you pure and wholly consecrated to God]; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved sound and complete [and found] blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah). 1 Thessalonians 5:23 AMP Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. 3 John 2 Forgiveness and Healing God s provision for remission of sin and wholeness in our body result from the atonement. Let s go back to the book of the Prophet Isaiah, written 800 years before Christ, to see God s plan revealed. Isaiah 53:4 says: Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows: Yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. In the original Hebrew language; the word griefs means sickness, disease, weakness or distress. The word sorrows means pain. Wow! 18

PAID IN FULL That paints an awe-inspiring picture of our Savior! Jesus actually carried our sickness, our disease, our weakness, our distress, and our pain! Isaiah 53:5 goes on to say: But he was wounded for our transgressions; He was bruised for our iniquities. Transgressions and iniquities include all of our sins, known or unknown; our willful disobedience; our wickedness; and our rebellion. The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed. The word chastisement means the penalty or price. The word peace means safety, welfare, prosperity, health, completeness, nothing missing and nothing broken! By the stripes Jesus took upon His back, we were healed! The word healed is rapha, which is one of the wonderful names of God Jehovah Rapha! The original Hebrew word rapha does NOT mean spiritual healing. It means to heal physically, to cure, and to restore to health! The Old Covenant blood sacrifices served to cover the sins of the people. But the New Covenant provided so much more! The penalty for sin was death. Jesus took on our sin. He took our place and paid the price of death that we owed. Now here is the amazing part. Jesus did not have to suffer with those stripes upon His holy back. He just had to die in order to provide remission of sin, and to reconcile us with God. He went the extra mile. His body was broken so that ours would be made whole. In fact, Jesus actually paid the price for our healing BEFORE He paid the price for our sins! He took the stripes upon His back BEFORE He died for us. Now let s look into the New Testament to see this prophetic word fulfilled. When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, that it might be fulfilled 19

HEALED FOR LIFE: HOW TO KEEP YOUR HEALING which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: He Himself took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses. Matthew 8:16-17 A fulfilled prophecy has been verified, the prediction has been completed! Take note that Jesus healed all who were sick. Jesus paid the price in full for our salvation and our healing! Salvation and healing are always tied together. During Jesus ministry, He preached the Kingdom of God and He healed the sick. Even today, it is common for healing to be manifest right along with the teaching of the Word. I have personally witnessed this coming to pass! As I simply share God s Word with His people, they are receiving His healing in their bodies! So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen. Mark 16:19-20 The third foundational scripture that teaches us about the connection between forgiveness and healing is 1 Peter 2:24. Who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness by whose stripes you were healed. Once again, we see that when God took care of the sin issue, providing a way for us to be in a state of righteousness with the most Holy of Holies, He also took care of the sickness issue! The word healed at the end of this scripture means physical healing. It is a word borrowed from a medical term used to describe the physical healing or curing of the human body. 20

PAID IN FULL Salvation and Healing According to the Word of God, salvation and healing are conjoined. Here is another biblical nugget of evidence to contemplate. The Greek word sozo is used interchangeably in the New Testament to mean salvation AND healing AND wholeness! According to Strong s Concordance, the Greek word sozo is used a total of 110 times in the New Testament. On 93 occasions, it is translated saved, in 9 instances it is translated made whole. It is translated healed 3 times, and be whole 2 times. Read the following scriptures, noting how sozo is used. (The underlined words are sozo in the original Greek.) And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. And when he saw Him, he fell at His feet and begged Him earnestly, saying, My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live. So Jesus went with him, and a great multitude followed Him and thronged Him. Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. For she said, If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well. Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction. And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, Who touched My clothes? But His disciples said to Him, You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, Who touched Me? And He looked around to see her who had done this thing. But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. And He said to her, Daughter, your 21

HEALED FOR LIFE: HOW TO KEEP YOUR HEALING faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction. Mark 5:22-34 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. John 3:16-17 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. This is the stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone. Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. Acts 4:8-12 But what does it say? The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame. For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. Romans 10:8-13 22

PAID IN FULL The same Greek word, sozo, is used in completely different contexts in the New Testament. In many instances, Jesus or His disciples are healing the sick. In other accounts, Jesus or His disciples are preaching and teaching about the precious gift of salvation! Salvation and healing are both included in the atonement! Jesus is Our Healer! Lastly, I d like you to simply look at the ministry of Jesus as portrayed through the gospels. It is never reported that Jesus made anyone sick! There are 18 accounts of individuals who sought Jesus for healing. He healed each and every one of them! There are 17 accounts where the bible states that Jesus healed ALL who were in need amidst multitudes of people! Spend time reading and meditating on the gospels of Jesus Christ. Take note of the compassion of Christ. Take note of His willingness to heal always! Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. (Hebrews 13:8) Jesus heals today! A Balance of Grace and Faith Through the wonderful gift of grace, healing and health have been provided for all believers! Grace is what God does for us, independent of us! We can do nothing to earn this grace. It is a gift, freely given! But it is our choice to receive this wonderful gift of grace. We receive through faith. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 23

HEALED FOR LIFE: HOW TO KEEP YOUR HEALING Once again, the original Greek word for saved in this scripture is sozo! If I were to include all of the words which are interchanged in the bible for the word sozo, this scripture would read: For by grace you have been saved, healed, and made whole through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. (author s paraphrase) Notice that it is through faith, by God s grace, that we receive of His free gifts! Here is another scripture God gives us to establish this truth. Through Him also we have [our] access (entrance, introduction) by faith into this grace (state of God s favor) in which we [firmly and safely] stand. And let us rejoice and exult in our hope of experiencing and enjoying the glory of God. Romans 5:2 AMP We have our access by faith into grace. God tells us to rejoice and exult in our hope of experiencing and enjoying the glory of God! Rejoice, knowing that the gift of healing and divine health has already been given, and the glory of God has been fully revealed through the manifestation of the wholeness within your body! God s work is complete. Salvation and healing were established; they were provided for God s children the moment Jesus paid the ultimate price on the cross. It is through faith that we appropriate (take hold of) what God has already provided by grace. Before I share more about our part in receiving and keeping our healing, let me share an analogy with you. Right now, there are television signals wherever you are. Those signals are being broadcast 24 hours a day 7 days a week. You may not have your television turned on. You may not be receiving those signals, but they are still there. The station doesn t start broadcasting 24

PAID IN FULL when you turn on your TV set and tune into their network. That s just when you start receiving the signal! God is our healing transmitter. He is broadcasting healing 24/7! Heart faith is your healing receiver. Unfortunately for many Christians, their receiver isn t working. And instead of checking to see if they re plugged in, turning the power on, or seeing if they have the channel adjusted, the first thing they do is call their cable provider and report an interruption in their service. If you aren t receiving healing, or if you ve lost your healing, don t question God s willingness to give it to you! He already has! We don t need to wait for God to move. He s already completed His wonderful work! We don t need to try to get God to transmit healing to us. We simply need to plug in, turn on and tune in, in order to receive it! So God s part is grace, and it s been completed for over 2000 years. Our part is faith to receive. But I ve often seen people get out of balance striving to get enough faith to receive. If you think that when you do everything correctly, praying the right amount, confessing healing scriptures the right amount, forgiving the right amount that THEN God is going to respond to you, you are out of balance. Faith doesn t move God. He has already moved by grace! Faith is NOT something you do to get God to respond to you. Quit trying to get God to do something and start believing what He has already done! Put your faith in God s grace instead of in your ability to make God move. You received your healing by faith. You stay healed by faith! 1 1 Andrew Wommack, Living in the Balance of Faith and Grace (Tulsa, OK: Harrison House, 2009), 92-94. 25

HEALED FOR LIFE: HOW TO KEEP YOUR HEALING Faith to Receive and to Keep Your Healing How can you doubt that God will do what He s already done? Why would you doubt that you re going to get it if you ve already got it? When you read those simple questions, it sheds a different light on faith for healing, doesn t it? In fact, God goes so far as to tell us that for the people of God, there is a place of rest, where we are to cease from our works as God did from His! Hebrews 4:9-10 says; There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. Warning this scripture does NOT mean that we should just kick back and do nothing. That would be like not even plugging in the TV set! This scripture DOES mean to cease from your own works, from thinking that you have to earn God s favor. It DOES mean ceasing from thinking you have to do something to motivate God to get Him to love you and answer your prayers. So then, how do we plug in, turn on, and tune in to the grace of God s healing? In the very next scripture, God provides us with a key instruction: Let us therefore be zealous and exert ourselves and strive diligently to enter that rest [of God, to know and experience it for ourselves], that no one may fall or perish by the same kind of unbelief and disobedience [into which those in the wilderness fell]. Hebrews 4:11 AMP 26

PAID IN FULL Interesting, God tells us that in order to enter that rest, we need to be zealous and exert ourselves and strive diligently! There are 4 major areas in which we need to labor to enter that rest. They are: 1. Develop a love relationship with God. Receive His love. Seek the Healer, not the healing. 2. Consistently feed on a steady diet of God s Manna (the Word) Do you have a healthy spiritual diet? 3. Take His Medicine regularly; declare God s promises of healing and health! 4. Praise God for what His Word says He s done, (which may not match up with what you feel or see). Celebrate God s goodness! Give thanksgiving for His grace! Acknowledge God! The next four chapters in Healed For Life will delve into these 4 keys to receiving and keeping your healing! Now read this declaration aloud. Repeat it. Receive it! No matter what the doctor s report says, God s report says that by His stripes I was healed! I m not going to be healed. I was already healed! That is good news, not good prophecy! It s already happened. It has already taken place. If it s already happened, I ll receive it! 27

HEALED FOR LIFE: HOW TO KEEP YOUR HEALING My healing has already been provided through the grace of God. I believe it! That settles it! Amen, so be it! 28
