While the Catholic Church s Social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society, it has also been called the Church s best kept secret. During Three Monday evenings in Lent, Deacon Bill Hisker will explore the scriptural foundations of the core social teachings of the Catholic Church as outlined by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. SPIRITUALITY Deuteronomy 18:15-20 At the people s request, God pledges to work through prophets as intermediaries. Psalm 95:1-2, 6-7, 7-9 We are reminded of our tendency to withhold our hearts, as at Meribah and Massah. 1 Corinthians 7:32-35 Paul urges the Church to follow the Lord without distraction. Mark 1:21-28 The crowds are astonished at Jesus teaching and how he backs it up with authority. In acknowledging the Real Presence of Christ, the Tabernacle Candle will burn from January 27 through February 2 in loving memory of Judith Massari from Margaret George. On the 40 th day after Christmas the Church celebrates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. In the gospel, Simeon calls Jesus a light to the nations, and so this day is also Candlemas, a feast of lights on which candles used during the liturgical year are blessed. Tapered candles for your home will be available in the vestibule of the Church throughout the week after they are blessed on Friday, February 2 during the 12:10 Mass. 2 candles per box / Suggested donation: $3.00 box The tradition of blessing throats began at a time when the Church s calendar was filled with blessings for the saints days. Many of these are no longer practiced, but somehow the custom of blessing throats survived. Two candles are held in the shape of a cross, and the candles are touched to the neck. Join us on Saturday, February 3 at the 8:00 AM Mass as we will celebrate the blessing of throats. In today s gospel reading, the people were amazed and asked one another, What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even unclean spirits and they obey him. You will notice that Jesus teaching is always consistent. There is no flip-flop. And there is no division between his words and his actions. Jesus lived as he taught, and whatever he said and did was a reflection of his love. No wonder his contemporaries were amazed. Jesus authority came from his consistent refection of his Father s love and harmony that existed between his words and actions. Those are the compelling reasons that draw our hearts to follow him in faith. May our actions be in harmony with our words, as Jesus actions were with God s. Let us pray that God gives us the strength to be consistent as Jesus was; let us pray that Jesus shows us how to imitate him according to his plan for each of us, so that we may become who we were created to be.
