PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD~ MARCH 20, 2016 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK With today s celebration of Palm Sunday we stand at the gateway of Catholicism s most solemn week of worship. As Jesus once prepared to enter Jerusalem to begin the climactic events of our salvation, we should be readying ourselves for re-immersion into them once more, so that we can again be vivified by their strengthening force. Together, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday comprise the Triduum, a unique time of our year of worship. Holy Thursday evening s 7:30 Mass of the Lord s Supper (the day s only Mass), marks the inauguration of the Eucharist and the priesthood. It is followed by adoration of the Blessed Sacrament late into the night. The starkness of Our Lord s suffering and death is the major point of emphasis of Good Friday. We will observe its liturgy at 3:00 in the afternoon. In the evening, at 7:30, teenagers of the parish will present their Living Stations of the Cross, always a greatly moving event. Saturday begins in silence, as we recall how the first believers, in shock, mourned for Jesus, seemingly claimed by death, at rest in his tomb. There will be no Saturday evening Mass at 5:00 because of the celebration of the Easter Vigil, the Church s foremost liturgy of the year, at 8:00. In it, Christ pierces the night with his light as we rejoice once more at his resurrection and the new life it brings us through Baptism. A great, multi-volume work of French liturgical scholars, translated into English as Days of the Lord, commenting on the worship of the Triduum, says that Each of these liturgies is spiritually alive; they teach not in words (i.e., in sermons) but in actions: they lead to an active celebration in the mystery. On Holy Thursday, after the Mass and transferal of the Blessed Sacrament, everyone is invited to join in adoration; and many people join in reading the farewell discourses (John 14-17). The atmosphere of meditation carries on from this first liturgy till the celebration of Good Friday. Finally, the mood of silent waiting on Holy Saturday gives way to the joyful alleluias that spring forth on Easter night, the shouts that endlessly proclaim our Easter faith: Christ is risen! He is truly risen! Easter Sunday s Masses follow our usual Sunday schedule, except that we will add extra Masses at 10:30 (in the lower school s gym) and at 12:00 (in Mary s Chapel, the lower church). All of them will express the unparalleled joy that belonging to Christ brings to those who believe. I hope you will join us for these spiritually powerful days. Please clip our Holy Week schedule from this bulletin if you haven t already received it in the mail. Msgr. David Hubba EASTER FLOWER MEMORIALS DUE THIS WEEK Donations for flowers and decorations to adorn our church during the Easter season can be made in memory of a loved one or for a special intention.
