THE WORLD BEYOND OUR DOORS Who are Men of Standard In Westminster, MD, a few years ago, a tiny little church was planted out of a heart to give addiction recovery members a place to worship where they felt they fit in. Everett and Robin Frye began Crossroads Restoration church to minister to recovering community members and give them a sense of belonging and accountability. From this point, Crossroads Community Church felt a calling to partner with them in support of their commitment to establishing a faith-based recovery program that worked to transform members on the inside as well as the outside. Before long, it became apparent that a core group of our county s men were most in need of healing and rebuilding independent, addiction-free lives. With a passion for these men, Tim Adams (on missions staff here at Crossroads), along with Kevin Nottingham (a construction and plumbing contractor), immediately began building a partnership with Everett and Crossroads Restoration Church, as well as personal relationships with the men in the recovery program. A community was birthed, and Men of Standard became a fully functioning ministry. A specific curriculum was written for the program, which included faith, finance, and vocational training elements to reestablish responsible community members who love their families and their Savior, Jesus Christ. Members must complete 3 tiers of the program before being released. Just recently a new graduate Brandon, celebrated his completion of the program and plans to remain with Men of Standard as a mentor to other men in the community through the construction business as a manager. Now, these men have begun to step out in leadership through missions around our county and across borders, in the name of Jesus, with the help and support of Crossroads Church. Tito, the first Men of Standard graduate, helped plant Men of Standard with Everett and is now running and operating two further missions with other men from the group. He oversees our Nica Works partnership, and runs the shop that collects, breaks down, and packages the bikes to send to Nicaragua for restoration and resale. In addition, he leads our partnership with Helping Up Mission in Baltimore, to bring the Food Pipeline ministry to those in need in Carroll County. The Men of Standard participate in our ministry in Appalachia with New Beginnings, where they use their construction skills to benefit a devastated community in West Virginia, and spend their time in the evening ministering to men through celebrate recovery programs there. God s work in this program is just beginning, and new opportunities keep coming, says Tim. Just this month, the community home for Men of Standard was condemned after a large fire destroyed the property. The men were evacuated, cared for, provided for, and hosted through church members and Helping Up Missions. Through God s grace they have found a new, unlikely home in the James House in Taneytown (originally a home for recovering women). The owners next door, want to continue to be involved with recovery ministry. Immediate needs to fill the house with mattresses and furniture still exist. Any donations would be welcome in reestablishing their new home!
