Generation No. 1 1. RICHARD 1 POWELL was born 17 Sep 1782 in North Carolina 1, and died 17 Jun 1863 in Pike County, Alabama 1. He married CHARLOTTE GRIFFIN? 2. She was born Abt. 1798 in North Carolina 3. Notes for RICHARD POWELL: Oldest known children all born in NC between 1818 and 1832. Next child born in Alabama about 1833. Some people on Worldconnect databases have attributed as many as twenty children to Richard and Charlotte, born over a period of nearly thirty years. It is highly unlikely that one woman could have had that many children. Other wives may have been involved, if, indeed, all those children are even from one family. There is about a seven-year gap between the birth of Sweet and that of Cure P, the oldest child who appears in Richard s household on a census. Coleman Powell (b. c1815) of Pike Co was about the same age as Sweet and also went to the same area of Florida. They could be brothers or it s possible they were cousins. Richard was assignee of Coleman Powell on a BLM land patent dated 8/15/1837. Richard and George C Powell both received land patents in Pike Co in 1837, as did Micajah Griffin. Daniel did not receive a patent until 1845. According to a Pike County Rootsweb Mailing List Posting, three Powells married three Livingston sisters. Among those listed: 1) David Porter Powell, b. 1885, who was grandson of Richard (b. 1782 in NC, age 55 when son K P was born; KP was abt 48 when son David was born.) and Charlotte; 2) Carl Brady Powell, b. 1894, who was grandson of Stephen P, son of George C (b. 1800 in NC); 3) Jesse Curren Powell, who was grandson of Larkin W, son of George (b. 1802 in SC) and Bersheba of Barbour County. http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.alabama.counties.pike/407/mb.ashx by Robert E.
