MEMORY VERSE HELPS LIFE OF PAUL #5 Paul s First Missionary Journey MEMORY VERSE: Colossians 3:23-24 And whatever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men,... for ye serve the Lord Christ. (The underlined portion of the verse indicates what the younger children should memorize. See Involvement Helps for Younger Children for helps in teaching the verse to the younger children.) INTRODUCE THE VERSE: We should always do our best. When we don t do our best, it displeases the Lord. The Bible verse today tells us why it is important to do our very best in everything we do. READ THE VERSE: Read the verse from the Bible or have an older child read it; then have all the children read with you from the verse visual. EXPLAIN THE VERSE: Colossians 3:23-24 This is where this verse is found in the Bible. We call it the address. It is found in the book of Colossians, chapter 3, verses 23 and 24. And whatever ye do, do it heartily, The things we do at school, at home, or in the neighborhood should be done with diligence and enthusiasm. Don t be lazy. We should cheerfully do our best for God and do it because we really want to please Him. as to the Lord, and not unto men, Don t do things just to please people. We should do them as if Jesus were standing right beside us.... for ye serve the Lord Christ. God is watching all the work we are doing for Him here on earth. He will reward what we do for Him. REPEAT THE VERSE: Add a Word After reading this verse from the Bible, explaining what it means, and repeating it at least two times, you may begin this drill. Divide your class into two groups. Group A will say one word and Group B will repeat the same word, plus one more word. You continue going back and forth until the complete verse is said. INVOLVEMENT HELPS FOR YOUNGER CHILDREN by Linda D. Ruth MEMORY VERSE: Shortened verse LIFE OF PAUL #5 Paul s First Missionary Journey Colossians 3:23 And whatever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.... Sing to the tune Pop Goes the Weasel. Stay on the following for two pitches: the third syllable of heartily and the words as and to and men. Use the following motions: heartily, Move hands to make a large heart shape. the Lord, Point to Heaven. not unto men.... Shake head from side to side. BIBLE LESSON HELPS: Card 5-1 Card 4-3 Card 3-6 Card 5-3 Card 5-5 As Elymas, stand up and shout together, Don t believe them! What they are saying is nonsense. Walk together around room as if going to synagogue. Greet friends. Enter quietly. Sit. Listen to Old Testament reading. Name several things Paul and Barnabas could have talked about. Such as: Do you think they talked about transformers? Do you think they talked about their favorite sports team? Do you think they talked about Elymas the magician? Do you think they talked about Sponge Bob? Each time, the children shake their heads and say, No. They told instead about the most important Person in their life. Use motions for Paul s message: God loved them. Put both hands over heart. Jesus died for them. Make cross with arms. He arose from the dead. Palms up, move hands upward. Jesus is God. Point to Heaven. You need to believe. Put both hands over heart. Have everyone stand and wave arms above head as shout excitedly, Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! The gods have come down to us in human bodies! Have two children pretend to drag Paul s body to other side of room. They look at it. Laugh. Each wipes his hands one over the other and announces, Well, we re done with Paul! BIBLE LEARNING GAME: To Serve God Form a circle with the children. Choose someone to stand in center. Children walk around the circle, singing to Here We Go Loop-de-Loo tune: I want to serve (2 notes) God. I want to serve (2 notes) God. I want to serve (2 notes) God because I belong (2 notes for -long ) to Him. Together, children around circle ask child in center, What can we do to serve God? Answer could be something like Carry these groceries into the house OR Invite a friend along to Good News Club OR Set the silverware on the table OR Make a card to tell your Grandma you love her And so on. Everyone does the named serving activity. One in center chooses person for next turn. Play again as long as time allows or until everyone has a turn. CHILD EVANGELISM FELLOWSHIP OF EASTERN PA, INC. LEARNING ABOUT THE BIBLE & THE OLD TESTAMENT BOOKS WEEK #21 (Place figure #1.) There are 12 Minor Prophets. (Place figures #39 and #40.) They are called Minor Prophets, not because they are less important than the Major Prophets, but because they are shorter in length. Their names are sort of unusual and perhaps more difficult to say, so today, we are going to spend some time just practicing the names of the 12 Minor Prophets. When we learned about the Minor Prophets, we only learned two a week. So let s review two at a time too. Maybe that will help us remember them more easily. The first two are Hosea and Joel. The next two are Amos and Obadiah. The next two are Jonah and Micah. The next two are Nahum and Habakkuk. The next two are Zephaniah and Haggai. The last two are Zechariah and Malachi. Now let s try one more time to say all 12 Minor Prophets together: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi. Next week, we are going to review all the books of the Old Testament. I hope you will practice saying them at home this week so that you will be able to do well when we start to review them. GO AND TELL BOX Week #22 Great Commission #4 INFORMATION (Suggested item to put in the Go and Tell Box Hindu and Buddhist figures.) Remember that the Great Commission is to Go... preach the Gospel to every creature. God loves each person in the world, and He wants everyone to hear about His Son so that they can have the opportunity to receive Jesus as their Saviour. Last week, we learned about two groups: (Place figures and wordstrips from previous week on flannelboard.) 1. Atheist They believe there is no God. 2. Muslim They believe in a god who is far away and cannot be known personally. Now, let s learn about two more religious groups who do not know the truth about Jesus and what He did to provide forgiveness of sin. (Pull out each figure and wordstrip as you talk about them.) PRAYER 1. Hindu (Place figure and wordstrip on flannelboard.) There are about one and a half million people in America who are Hindus. Hindus worship literally thousands of gods and deities. The main teaching is reincarnation which means that after death a person comes back to live as a cat, butterfly, etc. This, they believe, is advancing into better levels of being. Reincarnation is not resurrection. 2. Buddhist There are over three million Buddhists in America. (Place figure and wordstrips on flannelboard.) They practice yoga and meditation to become one with the universe. They believe right living, right thinking, and self denial will enable their souls to reach nirvana, a godly state of release from pain, sorrow, and desire. Adapted from: THE GREAT COMMISSION MISSIONS (Original content from William Carey Library) THANK God for Good News Club (Released Time Class) where you can learn the Truth from God s Word. ASK God to help you to be bold in sharing the Lord Jesus with others who do not know about Him. CHILD EVANGELISM FELLOWSHIP OF EASTERN PA, INC. P.O. BOX 4375 HARRISBURG, PA 17111-0375
