He married (1) MARY CATHERINE? about 1789. She was born about 1756 3. She died in 1804 in Fairfield Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania 2. He married (2) MARY? before 1778. He married (3) MARY? about 1783. Notes for Nicholas Lute: [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 4, Ed. 1, Tree #2324, Date of Import: Jan 19, 1999] NICHOLAS LUTE came into the wilderness of western Pennsylvania in march of 1772. He settled in what became Fairfield Township in Westmoreland County. County was formed in 1773 from a part of Bedford County. Nicholas came from Chester County, Pennsylvania to Fairfield Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He established a plantation of 422 acres, and he called it Lutesburg. This was started in 1772. This land is now believed to be part of the Mellon estate in this area. Nicholas had 3 wives, all of whom were named Mary. His third wife was Mary Catherine Good, a widow, who had a son, David. Mrs. Good's maiden name is not known, nor are the maiden names of the first two wives. His first four children were to his first two wives, the rest were to Mary Catherine Good. Nicholas died in April of 1802 and Mary Catherine died in 1804. The children sold their shares of Lutesburg Plantation to a wealthy neighbor named Robert Huston. Other Information Nicholas's sons, Andrew and Jacob are the only children known to have remained in Pennsylvania. At present, the parents of Nicholas are not known. But it is believed that he was a Palatinate German (Pennsylvania Dutch). Nicholas has been listed to have been born in Germany.

Generation 2 (con't) From Mona Woods: Nicholas Lute and Wife Mary cane into Westmoreland Co from Chester Co, Pa Nicholas lived in Chester Co. in 1769 Nicholas began improvements on his Westmoreland Plantation of 422 acres, 155 Perches in 1772. It was Surveyed in 1785 and Patented to him in Under warrant #77 in 1788. The land lay in the Ligonier Valley, Fairfield Twp of Westmoreland Co, Pa. In a will made in 1802 on record in Greensburg Pa., they had 11 Children, oldest Martha, youngest Barbara. Two sons who married Brendlinger sisters, Andrew married Magdelene Brendlinger, Jacob married Elisabeth Brendlinger. Martha and her husband Jeremiah Bradley George and wife, Elisabeth Wallace Catherine and husband Robert I Barbara and her husband and Henry Visner At this time, this is all I have tracked. Copied from Records Of Ira Lute of Denver, Colorado in 1936: My belief is that the Lute family is Welsh for I have Records oh that they were called Luters (Those who played the Lute), when King Edward I made them take surnames. They became Lute. (This is probably not correct, they were probably German). I have records of John, Philip (b: 1537), James (b: 1542), Christopher (clothes worker) (b: 1578) and Ann, daughter of John, Baptized 1564 from a book on English and Welsh names. I have no information on Nicholas Lute BACK of Chester, Co. Pa. in 1769. George. Lute, who I believe was his father, paid Taxes in Chester Co. from 1769 to 1771 on 100 acres of land, 3 horses, 2 cattle, and 4 sheep. Generation 3 (con't) This file was contributed for use in the AHGP Archives by the author, Kathleen Grone [mailto:kgrone@yahoo.com] ====================================================================== George LUTE father of Thomas Jefferson LUTE was the third child born to Robert and Sarah LUTE. I was told also by another source that his middle name was Washington not William. George was born November 3, 1838 in Adams County, Ohio. He married Louisa Ella MOXLEY December 31, 1857 in Putnam County, Missouri. Louisa was the daughter of Hardy MOXLEY and Lorraine FREEMAN. Louisa was born July 31, 1839 in Missouri. She had one sister named Sarah that I know of. George and Louisa had the following children. James William, born November 18, 1858 in Missouri who married Catharine REID; Sarah Ellen born October 6, 1860; Viola Vernice born December 1862; Marion C. born December 1863; Martha Helen born April 4, 1866 in Iowa; Melissa A. born November 7, 1868 in Iowa; John Wesley born May 3, 1871 in Nebraska who married Leticia; Dollie Leila born February 5, 1873 in Nebraska who married H. N. HASTINGS in Wayne County, Nebraska; Thomas Jefferson (our ancestor) born May 6, 1875 in Herman, Nebraska and died August 11, 1959 in Wayne, Nebraska who married Georgianna "Anna" CRAIG who was born about 1880 in Nebraska. They married March 5, 1902; Lorenzo Delano born July 17, 1877 in Herman, Nebraska; Edda born 1878 in Nebraska; Zenobia Carol "Cassie" born February 5, 1880 in Herman, Nebraska and lastly Ida Belle born April 24, 1882 in Herman, Nebraska. George moved to Missouri with his parents. He first married a Rosanna R. who died and then married Louisa E. MOXLEY in Missouri. Sometime after 1860 George, his wife and two eldest children moved to Iowa as did his parents and many siblings. In 1869 they moved to the New England Community of Washington County, Nebraska, and homesteaded just west of Herman. Sometime after his wife's death he moved to the Boulder area of Colorado. It is thought several of his children had previously moved to the area. He died Nov. 5, 1930 in Boulder, Colorado at the age of 92 and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery at Denver. Many of his siblings and parents are buried near Herman in an old cemetary. Their grave stones are still visible there. George was a successful farmer and printer. Generation 3 (con't) Robert Huston LUTE (father of George LUTE, grandfather of Thomas Jefferson LUTE) was born in 1815 in Pennsylvania. He is the son of George LUTE born 1780 at LUTEsburg Plantation in Pennsylvania and Elizabeth WALLACE born 1782 in Ireland. Both George and Elizabeth died in Adams County, Ohio. Robert married Sarah Elizabeth MCCALL about 1835 in Pennsylvania. Sarah died and is buried in Herman, Nebraska. Sarah was born in Wales in 1815. Robert and Sarah had 13 children. Elizabeth Jane was born 1834 in Fairfield Township, West Moreland County, Pennsylvania. She died in 1877. She married John ST.CLAIR in 1852 in Scioto County, Ohio. Granville Debou was born 1836 in Fairfield Township, West Moreland County, Pennsylvania and died 1909 it is thought in Nebraska. He married Elmira Belinda LINCOLN. They had a child Sybil. *(See notes below-linda BERGAN, researcher is descended from this line). George William (see above); Nancy Ann born 1841 in Adams County, Ohio died 1877 married Moses MANTZ in 1865 in Sigourney, Iowa. Mary Emily was born in 1844 in Scioto County, Ohio and married Marvin REYNOLDS. Michael David was born in in Scioto County, Ohio. He died 1926. He married Saritha Jane AKERS. Jane Vernice was born 1846 in Scioto County, Ohio; John Huston was born 1846 in Scioto County, Ohio and married Lutitia MOORE; Sarah Margaret was born in 1849 in Scioto County, Ohio and married James L. HARVEY. Alexander Jacob was born in 1853 in Scioto County, Ohio and married Anna STEINSPRING. Robert Andrew was born 1853 and married Rose Mary HARVEY (sister of James L. Harvey). Daniel Warren was born in 1855 in Union Township, Missouri and married Caroline H. MAXWELL and lastly Alice Josephine was born in 1859 in Union Township, Missouri and married John COMBS. Robert HUSTON was named for a good friend, who eventually bought Lutesburg Plantation from the heirs. According to a source the HUSTON family is still very prominent in the area. George didn't sell his share until quite a few years after his father's death which is why Robert HUSTON's eldest children were born there. Robert Huston LUTE died from a fall off a roof in South Dakota in 1890 or 1900, a 10 year difference in dates. I found Robert's obituary in Adam's County where there are many well-documented MCCALLs at that time. They even started a town down on the Ohio River. It is thought Robert was helping family in South Dakota at the time of his death. The LUTE's were a member of the Methodist Church. Robert and all his children were taught to read and write. He was a farmer and a carpenter. George LUTE was born 1780 at Luteburg Plantation, Pennyslvania. He is the son of Nicolas LUTE and Mary?. He was a printer and is thought to be German (Pennsylvania Dutch). It is thought George may have been born in England while his parents were traveling from Germany. This is all speculation as far as I know. George married Elizabeth WALLACE before 1809. Elizabeth was born in 1782 and may have been born in Ireland. It is said she was Scots-Irish. er father is thought to be Daniel Wallace and she had one sister and a brother named Daniel. I found the George LUTE reference in the 1780 PA census index. He was in Chester Co., Charlestown. In 1800 Nicholas was in Westmoreland, Charles was in Berks Co, EL Twp. and George was in Cumberland, EP Twp. There is an undocumented family legend that Elizabeth was mulatto or part Native American. Also, one of Elizabeth's sisters supposedly married a Black man. Because of this George became so upset that he moved the family to Ohio. One reason I don't buy the legend is that Elizabeth was born in Ireland. The possibility that her sister married a Black man is more likely to be true but many were migrating to Ohio during this time. It makes an interesting story though. There is the possibility that Elizabeth was living with her son John in Scioto County, Ohio at the time of her death. George and Elizabeth has the following children. Andrew George who married Rebecca Brannon; Jacob Nicholas married Tabitha SKIDMORE;

Generation 3 (con't) Andrew George who married Rebecca Brannon; Jacob Nicholas married Tabitha SKIDMORE; Mary Vernice who married William HARRIS, than Andrew MCLARY or MCCLARY; Margaret Helen born about 1810 in Pennsylvania married John MULLENS in 1828; Daniel Wallace born 1810 married Elizabeth ARNOLD (Daniel is thought to be the eldest child but it is speculation); John H. born 1812 married Susanna NICHOLS. Robert HUSTON married Sarah Elizabeth MCCALL. Much about Nicholas is speculation. Nicholas LUTE was born 1752 in the Palatinate (Swiss region), Germany. This is not documented at all and is debated as he lived in Pennsylvania is a primarily Scots-Irish region. He moved to western Pennsylvania about 1772. As to whether he served in the Revolutionary War is unknown at this time. Nicolas married three women named Mary the last being Mary Catharine who went by Catharine. It is not known which is the mother of which or all his children. So, Nicholas and Mary had the following children: These are thought to be children from the last Mary Catharine. He had, it is thought, about 13 children. Christian and Martha twins born 1776, Charles born about 1778 and George born 1780. Nicholas died in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania in 1802. We descend from George. The following are correspondances I have received on the LUTE family. The religion of the LUTE family is also speculation- Family notes (?) say the family roots were in Maryland before Pennsylvania and from Germany before that. They also could mean that some family went to Maryland, some went to Pennsylvania. (If some of the family were Catholic this would make since as Maryland was a Catholic colony and Pennsylvania predominately a mixture of religions. Maryland was tolerant of other religions as well. LUTE was also a Jewish name which gives pause to other ideas.) They were in Westmoreland Co by 1783 I think it was. They may have been there earlier. Their land was surveyed in that year just like Nicholas had his land surveyed one or two years before even though he had it years before then. Ed STUMP, Hawaii (researching Margaret LUTE HINES thought to be a sister or neice of Nicolas LUTE). "Nicolas he was a very wealthy landowner. It is believed by other researchers that he was buried on his own property which was strip mined so the grave is probably lost. LUTE researchers from the area have searched for the grave...there is an old fort in the vicinity which has many headstones that have the carving entirely worn away. We most likely will never know." Keith LUTE, PA "The most knowledgeable and well-documented LUTE genealogist that I've come across is Keith LUTE in Pennsylvania. His address was until recently RD #1, Box 239, Rochester Mills, PA 15771. I think he wrote my sister that it had recently changed although he hadn't moved. We were out there a few years ago and he showed us farms, took us to graves and showed us approximately where Lutesburg Plantation was. It's impossible to pinpoint it exactly because the whole area was stripmined. Old Nicholas was sitting on a fortune if he but knew it!" Linda BERGAN "According to our information, Nickles or Nicholas LUTE arrived in western PA in March 1772 and died there in 1802. He is believed to be the only German pioneer in that area, the rest being Scots Irish. His land in the Ligonier Valley was surveyed and dated in Dec. of 1785. He left ten children and one stepson by three wives, all named Mary. His third wife went by the name of Catherine. His eldest son, George, whom I am descended from, was married to Elizabeth WALLACE and migrated to Adams Co., Ohio. I am descended from his son, Robert Huston LUTE." Linda BERGAN. *Linda is a relative descended from Granville, Robert HUSTON's brother. I received much information from her. LUTE researchers may contact her or myself. Her email address is LBergan@excite.com. Mine email is kgrone@yahoo.com. Linda has been in contact with other LUTE researchers as well.
