Behold how good and how pleasant it is when brothers and sisters live together in unity. 2. שׁ לוֹם ע ל יכ ם Aleichem) (Shalom Shalom Aleichem is a mystical poem about two of God s angels which, tradition teaches, accompany a person home from shul on Friday evening. And that s what we like about Shabbat. 5. נ ר שׁ ל שׁ בּ ת Shabbat) (Ner Shel Shabbat is a time of peace, a time for family. There are special blessings we recite to welcome Shabbat into our home. The first of these blessings is that for the Shabbat candles. A blessing that helps us welcome Shabbat with brightness and joy. בּ רוּ ך א תּ ה י י א לה ינוּ מ ל ך ה עוֹל ם, א שׁ ר ק דּ שׁ נוּ בּ מ צ וֹת יו, ו צ וּ נוּ ל ה ד ל יק נ ר שׁ ל שׁ בּ ת. Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech haolam, asher kid'shanu b'mitzvotav v'zivanu l'hadlik ner shel Shabbat Blessed are You, Eternal our God, Sovereign of the universe, who hallows us with mitzvot, commanding us to kindle the light of Shabbat. 5

6. בּ ר כוֹת ה מּ ש פּ ח ה It is traditional for parents to bless their children on Shabbat. There are many variations on how this blessing is made. The most common invites parents to place their hands upon their children s heads and recite the priestly blessing, a blessing as old as our people itself. Y'simcha Elohim k'efrayim v'chi-menasheh For the boys we say: י שׂ מ ך א לה ים כּ א פ ר י ם ו כ מ נ שּׁ ה. May God inspire you to be like Joseph s boys, like Ephraim and like Menasheh. For the girl we say: י שׂ מ ך א לה ים כּ שׁ ר ה ר ב ק ה ר ח ל ו ל א ה. Y'simeich Elohim k'sarah, Rivkah, Rachel, v'leah. May God inspire you to be like our matriarchs, like Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah. Together we say: Y'varechecha Adonai V'yish'm'recha. Ya'er Adonai panav eilecha vichuneka. Yisa Adonai panav eilecha v'yasem l'cha shalom. י ב ר כ ך י י ו י שׁ מ ר ך. י א ר י י פּ נ יו א ל י ך ו יח נּ ךּ. י שּׂ א י י פּ נ יו א ל י ך ו י שׂ ם ל ך שׁ לוֹם. May God bless you and keep you. May God s light shine upon you, and may God be gracious to you. And may you always feel God s presence within you always, and may you find peace. 6

7. ק דוּשׁ (Kiddush) The kiddush is the blessing that helps us sanctify Shabbat and make it holy. Blessed are You, Eternal our God, Sovereign of the universe, who makes us holy with mitzvot, commanding us concerning the washing of hands. 7

9. ה מּוֹצ יא (HaMotzi) On Shabbat, as we gather together with family and friends, we also say Hamotzi a special prayer over our braided challah as we praise God and thank God for giving us the food that we eat. בּ רוּ ך א תּ ה י י א לה ינוּ מ ל ך ה עוֹל םה מּוֹצ יא ל ח ם מ ן ה א ר ץ Ba-ruch a-tah, A-do-nai, E-lo-hei-nu, me-lech ha-o-lam, ha-mo-tzi le-chem min ha-a-retz. Blessed are You, Eternal our God, Sovereign of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth. 10.
