Pine Knolls Alliance Church September 2017 THE MESSENGER The Pastor s Pen Gratitude and Grace: The Fall Launch By Pastor Steve VanDixhorn How are you doing? I bet you hear this question dozens of times a month. It could come from a co-worker or a friend. Or maybe it s your child or your parent that poses the question. I m going to guess that when most of you hear that question you start to review the circumstances of your life. Am I healthy? Are the people I love doing ok? How are my finances? Is my work going well? And so on. After all, how we are doing is directly related to our circumstances right? When things are going well, we re good. When life gets hard, not so much so. When our sense of well-being is directly The Ministry Minute Children play a game of Beach Ball Bonanza at the GO BIG! Summer came held by Pine Knolls at Moreau Park this August. The camp saw 126 kids over five days, and reached out into the church s surrounding community. linked to our circumstances, life can begin to feel like a roller coaster. Having said that, we ve all met people who refuse to allow circumstances to control them. My house just burned down praise the LORD nobody was hurt. My friend was recently diagnosed with cancer God is working this out for good. Our family is on the brink of financial disaster what doesn t kill you only makes you stronger. Unfortunately, in the efforts to stay positive at all costs, authenticity and depth of emotion are lost (important qualities as we develop relationships with others and with God). The question we face is, How can we live 1

authentically without being held hostage by our emotions? This is one of the questions we will be addressing during our Fall Launch. We have titled the 8 week series starting on September 17, Gratitude and Grace: A Journey Through Philippians. This series is your chance to feel more deeply AND stay off the Ups and Downs of Life s roller coaster. There will be a journal/ workbook that will help you to wrestle on a daily basis with the lessons found in the book of Philippians. I believe this will be one of the most important message series our congregation has worked through. Our vision as a church is to experience and share the hope and healing of Jesus. A major part of sharing the hope is learning how to live with hope in the midst of great difficulty. I hope you ll make the decision to participate in our Fall Launch. Attend the Sunday morning service as often as possible. Engage with the journal/workbook. It s your chance to build on your 10 minutes with God. Join a small group if you aren t already in one. (If you can t seem to get plugged into a small group, ask someone you know to get together every other week over coffee to talk about what you re learning.) Pre-decide to do both of the Milestone Action Steps. (You re going to have to wait until the Journal comes out to see what they are.) I believe God wants to make us softer and stronger. Softer toward Him and others. Stronger in the face of adversity. I m convinced God will use this Fall Launch to bring about both of these in our congregation. If this, in any way, rings true in you join me for this Fall Launch. Family and Children s Ministry Fall Programs Begin Sept. 17th By Teanna Fullen, Director of Children s Ministry We are so excited to enter a new Ministry Year in the upcoming month. Children s Ministry launches the Fall Program September 17. As a result, there are a few housekeeping items that need to be addressed. Your children will need to move up to the next grade level beginning in September. Children 18 months and up will be in the Toddler Room. 3 and 4 year olds will be in Preschool. The remaining classrooms are: K-2, 3-5th. New registration forms will also need to be completed for your children for the new ministry year. You can pick these up in advance! AWANA begins September 13th, at 6p.m. downstairs in Children s Ministry. New registration forms will need to be completed for the new AWANA year as well. We are still in need of volunteers in Children s Ministry. This is a service Pine Knolls offers to parents seeking to grow in Christ, as well as to the kids of Pine Knolls so they may grow in a firm foundation with God at the center. Go and Make Disciples: Missions At PKA DID YOU KNOW? By Craig and Sue Querfeld, missionaries with TEAM in Peru Much has happened and there have been many changes in our ministry and our family since we were last here. DID YOU KNOW that all three of our children have graduated from college? David graduated from Wheaton College in 2013 with his degree in Communications. He then went to the University of Edinburgh and earned his Masters degree in Linguistics. He now lives in Austin, Texas, where he is a high school Spanish teacher. Philip graduated from Cairn University (formerly Philadelphia Biblical University) in 2016 with his Bachelors degree in Youth and Family Ministries and his Masters in Counseling. In August he will begin his studies in Spiritual Formation at Dallas Theological Seminary, pursuing a Masters of Theology degree. Becky graduated from Messiah College in May, and in June began pursuing her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Simmons College in Boston. DID YOU KNOW that both David and Philip are married? David married Sydney Seagren in Telluride, Colorado, on October 3, 2014, and Philip married Rebekah Zimmerman in Allentown, Pennsylvania, on May 28, 2016. DID YOU KNOW... that El Camino, the church we planted in Arequipa, is now fully under Peruvian leadership? Arcadio Vílchez was installed as the Senior Pastor in June of 2014. Since then we have been serving under him to ensure a smooth transition. The church is now solidly behind him and he has a part-time youth and music pastor working with him. Craig and I turned over our leadership responsibilities couples ministry (both of us), men s ministry (Craig), and children s ministry (me) to capable leaders within the church before we came to the US in April. DID YOU KNOW that the Association of Christian Bible Churches of Peru (our church association) is in the process of planting several other churches in and around both Lima and Arequipa? Some of these are under the leadership of missionaries, some under that of Peruvians, and some under multi-national leadership. In Arequipa, our newest co-workers Jason and Sarah are spearheading the work in Ciudad de Dios, a needy 4

area north of the city. They have a worship service, a children s ministry, some community development projects, and an after school homework program. We are awaiting the arrival of Seth and Jessica in September. Together with Edward, who came to faith through El Camino in its early stages, and his wife Esme, they are going to lead a church plant on the other side of Arequipa. It is exciting to see the next generation of missionaries and Peruvian leaders rising to the challenge of reaching people for God s kingdom. DID YOU KNOW that TEAM and SAM (South America Mission) are intentionally working together in Latin America in order to have a stronger missionary force and thus be able to reach out to a greater number of people in South and Central America and Mexico? Craig has been an integral part of this union and we continue to work with the leadership of both missions toward strong and effective ministries in the entire region. SOOOO Now that you know all this, you are probably asking, What about you? What will you be doing? We are at an important juncture in our ministry and we have developed what we call our 20/20 Vision. After more than 20 years of hands-on church planting, we are looking forward to using the next 20 to multiply ourselves by empowering church planters and other vibrant ministries in Latin America. Craig is now TEAM s Senior Director for Global Ministries in South America. As such he oversees all of TEAM s ministries in South America as well as working with SAM leadership to supervise the strategic development of ministries in all of Latin America. I am moving into a coaching and mentoring role that involves member care and development as well as the orientation of new missionaries for both TEAM and SAM. This is exciting for us and we would ask you to pray for us and for all those to whom we will minister. May God be glorified and may many more people come to faith in His Son through the many different ministries happening in Latin America. 5
