Josiah (Young King) 2 Chronicles 34 Make It Fun: Introductory Activities Prepare to offer one or more of the following activities as children arrive. Let one or two teachers lead activities in different areas of the room while another teacher greets parents and children at the door. Activity 1 Find the Crowns Find the Crowns is an activity that uses fine motor skills and discovery to introduce today s Bible story. What You Need: A large plastic bin, paper shreds to fill the bin, and mini crowns Before the Activity: Fill the plastic bin with the paper shreds. Hide the mini crowns among the paper shreds in the bin. During the Activity: Let the children take turns sifting through the paper shreds to find a crown. Make sure to give every child a turn. You may need to put crowns back in the bin as they re discovered if you have a large class. Before the Activity: I have something fun hidden here inside this bin. Let s take turns discovering what it is! After the Activity: Who wears a crown? (Pause for responses.) Yes! A king! In our Bible story today, we ll hear all about a king, but he wasn t just any king. This king was just a KID. Can you believe it? Let s go find out all about this young king! Make It True: Bible Story Time 1. Bible Story Week Three: Josiah (Young King) 2 Chronicles 34 1
Weekly Focus: I can do what s right. What You Need: Bible STORYTELLER: Come join me on the floor for our Bible story! Today s true Bible story (hold up Bible) is about a kid named Josiah. Josiah was eight years old! Raise your hand if you have an eight-year-old brother, or sister, or cousin. (Pause.) That s awesome! When Josiah was eight years old, God made him a KING! Can you even believe it? An eight-year-old boy was KING! God knows that KIDS ROCK and God made Josiah a good king. Now, when you re the king, you can go anywhere you want. You re the boss. You can have all the toys, all the snacks, and all the teddy bears. But Josiah, well, he didn t want those things. He just wanted to follow God. He knew to do what God wanted him to do. Even though he was a kid, he did good things for the people. He tore down all the bad statues and rebuilt the giant temple where people went to pray to God. And (hold up your Bible) he read the Bible God s Word and promised to do everything God wanted him to do! And it all started when he was a kid. Josiah was just eight when he became king a GOOD king. Raise your hand if you re a kid. (Pause.) So, if Josiah could follow God and do what God wanted him to do, do you think you can too? (Pause.) YES! You can, because why? Because Kids ROCK! Who can do what God wants you to do? CHILDREN: [Bottom Line] I can do what God wants me to do! STORYTELLER: That s right! Josiah was a kid, but he did what was right and I know you can too. Let s pray. 2. Prayer Dear God, thank You for Josiah and all the awesome ways he showed that he loved you by doing the right thing. Even though he was only eight years old when he became king, he did what You wanted him to do. Help us to do what You ve asked us to do too. We can do what You want us to do with Your help. What You Need: A Flash Drive Recommended song for the week: Every Day Make It Stick: Application Activities These activities are designed to help preschoolers understand and remember today s Bible story and Bottom Line. **Please check each child s nametag for any allergies that are listed before giving out snacks. ** Activity 2 Crown Snack Crown Snack is an activity that retells the Bible story while the children enjoy their snack.. What You Need: Bread slices, crown cookie cutter, squeezable strawberry jelly, skittles, plates, knife (for leader to spread jelly) Before the Activity: Give each child a slice of bread, 5/6 skittles During the Activity: Retell the Bible story as kids take turns cutting their bread into a crown shape. Take turns squeezing some jelly onto their crown and spread it for them. Encourage them to put the jewels (Skittles), in the points of the crown) After the Activity: Say the Bottom Line. During the Activity: Today the story we heard from the Bible was about Josiah. Josiah knew God wanted him to do what was right. Josiah was only a kid and he was a KING! WOW! What does a king wear on his head? That s right a crown. Let s decorate our crowns together. Josiah wanted to be a good king and do what God wanted him to do. He knocked down all of the bad things and rebuilt a HUGE temple so that people could praise God. After the Activity: Josiah did what God wanted him to do. We can too! Who can do what God wants you to do? [Bottom Line] I can do what God wants me to do! Activity 3 Maracas Maracas is an activity that combines the theme with repetition to review the memory verse. Before the Activity: Fill each water bottle half full of beans. Replace the lid to the water bottle. Cover the entire bottle with masking tape, including the top of the bottle, to securely close it. Each child will need one maraca. (Depending on the time you have and the size class, the children might enjoy covering the bottle with colorful masking tape.) During the Activity: Give each child a maraca. Encourage the children to say the memory verse several times while shaking their maracas. After the Activity: Send the maracas home with each child. Before the Activity: You know what? (Pause.) You rock! During the Activity: (Give each child a maraca.) Let s say our memory verse while we shake our maracas! Are you ready to rock? (Do activity.) After the Activity: You rocked at saying your memory verse and shaking your maracas! Our memory verse tells us that God made us to do good things. We can do what God wants us to do! Who can do what God wants you to do? [Bottom Line] I can do what God wants me to do! Activity 4 If I Were King If I Were King is an activity that allows the children to brainstorm a key element in today s Bible story. What You Need: King Activity Page copied on white cardstock, permanent marker Shared Supplies: crayons During the Activity: Ask the children to use the crayons to draw what they would do if they were a king. After the children have finished their drawing, use the marker to write what the children said they have drawn. After the Activity: Share each child s drawing with the rest of class. Before the Activity: In our story today, we heard about a kid just a little older than you who was a king! WOW! Kids rock! During the Activity: (Give each child an Activity Page.) What would you do if YOU were king? (Pause.) Great answers! Use the crayons to draw what you would do if you were a king on your page! (Do activity.) Great job! I am going to come around and write what your awesome picture is about! (Pause.) Now let s see what all of our friends would do if they were king! (Finish activity.) After the Activity: You all had such amazing answers! You would do great things just like Josiah. Josiah did what s right by doing what God wanted him to do! You can too! 4

Activity 5 Colorsheet What You Need: Colorsheet/child Get Ready to Dismiss Greet parents at the door and tell them that this month preschoolers are learning that [Bottom Line] I can do what God wants me to do. Encourage parents to repeat the Bottom Line at home and help their child understand that [Bottom Line] I can do what God wants me to do. Send any craft activities home with the child as they leave.
