THIRTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ NOVEMBER 15, 2015 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Next Sunday at 4:00, the annual Thanksgiving prayer gathering sponsored by the River Dell Clergy Association will take place at the beautifully named Temple Avodat Shalom ( Service of Peace ), located at 385 Howland Avenue in River Edge. Rabbi Paul Jacobson will lead the prayers, with participation from the clergy and congregants of local religious communities, including ours. Father Michael Sheehan, pastor of St. Peter s in River Edge, will preach. Gratitude is very important to Jewish believers, as something due both to God and to human benefactors. A moving benediction that accompanies public readings from the Torah (the Books of the Law, the first five books of Scripture, traditionally ascribed to Moses) says, Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who bestow good to the undeserving, and who have dealt kindly with me. To this, worshippers respond by saying, He who has shown you kindness, may He deal kindly with you forever. One stirring expression of the thanksgiving due to God is Psalm 107, which thanks the Lord for the completion of hazardous journeys by land and by sea, for release from captivity, and for the restoration of good health in the following verses, among others: Give thanks to the Lord who is good, whose love endures forever! Let them thank the Lord for such kindness, such wondrous deeds for mere mortals. For he satisfied the thirsty, filled the hungry with good things. Let them offer a sacrifice in thanks, declare his works with shouts of joy. He changed the desert into pools of water, arid land into springs of water, And settled the hungry there; they build a city to live in. They sowed fields and planted vineyards, brought in an abundant harvest. God blessed them, they became very many, and their livestock did not decrease.... Their families increased like their flocks. The upright saw this and rejoiced; all wickedness shut its mouth. Whoever is wise will take note of these things, will ponder the merciful deeds of the Lord. For those who cherish Judaism, all significant events are deserving of thanks, even ones that seem to impart disadvantages, because God s designs intend ultimately only good for His people. As a rabbinic saying has it, Let a man accustom himself to say always: Whatever the All-merciful does is for the good. I hope many of you will join in the prayers of thanksgiving that will be offered to God in words and in music next Sunday afternoon. Msgr. David Hubba JOIN US! INTERFAITH THANKSGIVING PRAYER SERVICE NOVEMBER 22 The annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service will be held on Sunday, November 22 at 4:00 pm at Temple Avodat Shalom (385 Howland Avenue, River Edge). In addition to Saint Joseph and Temple Avodat Shalom, participating congregations include St. Peter the Apostle, The Reformed Church of Oradell, Annunciation Episcopal Church, the First Congregational Church of River Edge, the Central Unitarian Church of Paramus and Grace Lutheran Church. Come and help represent Saint Joseph at this beautiful prayer service that has become a very special tradition in our community. IT S GAME ON! AT OUR YOUTH GROUP Saint Joseph s new youth minister, Donna Cirino, is delighted to report that she met with some of the teens this past weekend at our first meeting, and I was so thrilled as they gave me such a warm welcome. We watched the movie God s Not Dead, after which we discussed the film and enjoyed pizza. I am very excited and the teens seem to be too. At the meeting we talked about when they would like to meet. They feel that the best time is on Sundays from 5:00 7:00 pm. GAME NIGHT TONIGHT! Our next Youth Group meeting is November 15 in the Parish Life Center (268 Grove St., Oradell) from 5:00 7:00 pm. It s GAME Night! Come and bring a friend! All teens in grades 9-12 are welcome. You do NOT have to be a member of the parish. Donna has some great games but feel free to bring yours as well. Looking forward to seeing you there! 3
