We start Advent on December 3. Advent this year will be all of three weeks due to the fact that Christmas Eve will fall on the Fourth Sunday of Advent. Instead of a normal 28 days to spiritually prepare for Christmas we are looking at 21 days this year. St. Patrick Parish is going to offer BINGO to the greater Cedar Rapids community beginning on Monday, January 8, 2018. We will play every Monday. The doors will open at 5 PM and we will start promptly at 6 PM. The income generated will go to replacing the roof on our Church. We are currently forming teams of workers. Each team will work once a month. If you would like to be apart of this exciting new venture, please call Cindy at the Parish Office 362-7966. The word Advent is from the Latin adventus for "coming" and is associated with the four weeks of preparation for Christmas. Advent blends together a penitential spirit, very similar to Lent, a liturgical theme of preparation for the Second and Final Coming of the Lord, called the Parousia, and a joyful theme of getting ready for the Bethlehem event. Since the 900s Advent has been considered the beginning of the Church s liturgical year. This does not mean that Advent is the most important time of the year. Easter has always had this honor. The traditional color of Advent is purple or violet which symbolizes the penitential spirit. This is reflected by the vestments worn by the priest and the color of those candles on our Advent Wreaths. My hope and prayer for you is that you would embrace the Season of Advent with a firm and focused attitude. More and more, Christians are so enthralled with the sounds and the lights of Christmas that we pretty much ignore the whole point of Advent. Please consider an Advent that is focused on prayer and penance. Consider doing Eucharistic Adoration an hour a week, going to Confession or something as simple as remembering the greatest gift we make at Christmas is a gift to the Church. All of these things help us to spiritually prepare our souls so that we might experience to the joy of Christ s birth at Christmas Sincerely, Rev. Ivan Nienhaus THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2017 HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION The Mass Schedule is as follows: 8:30 AM IN THE CHURCH 12:05 PM IN THE CHURCH 5:30 PM IN THE CHURCH 4TH SUNDAY OF ADVENT WEEKEND MASS SCHEDULE Saturday, Dec. 23: 4PM Sunday, Dec. 24: 8AM, 10AM, & 12noon DECEMBER 30/31 MASS SCHEDULE Saturday, Dec. 30 4PM Sunday, Dec.31 8AM, 10AM, & 12noon CHRISTMAS IS COMING: With the upcoming Holiday Season, beginning, November 18th the ARK CATHOLIC BOOKS AND GIFTS STORE will be using the sitting room in the Rectory for additional merchandise. KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS 909 KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS POSTER CONTEST. A great way to prepare children for the upcoming celebration of the birth of Christ is through the Keep Christ in Christmas poster contest. Children age groups 5-7, 8-10, 11-14 are invited to reflect on the significance of our Savior s birth, as they participate in the season of Advent. Regarding this request to make Mary s Immaculate Heart known and loved, Jesus and Mary asked Lucia to establish the 5 first Saturday devotion. On October 10, 1925, Mary once again appeared to Lucia holding the child Jesus. Mary showed Lucia a heart encircled by thrones. At the same time the child Jesus said: Have compassion on the Heart of your most holy Mother covered with thorns, with which ungrateful men pierce it at every moment, and there is no one to make an act of reparation to remove them. Then Mary said, Look, my daughter,at my Heart surrounded with thorns with which ungrateful men pierce me every moment by their blasphemies and ingratitude. You at least try to console me and say that I promise to assist at the hour of death, with the graces necessary for salvation, all those who on the First Saturday of five consecutive months shall 1) confess theirs sins 2) receive Holy Communion 3) recite five decades of the Rosary and keep me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary with the intention of making reparation to me. This request was made on December 10, 1925, eight years after the Fatima apparitions. The importance of this request is made clear by Jesus s appearance to Lucia on February 15, 1926 two months later. Jesus was reassuring Lucia that she would be given the grace to carry out this mission. There seems to be no doubt that this devotion has great merit and that Jesus wants Mary s Immaculate Heart known and loved by us. 5
