ST JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH ~ ST PHILIP NERI CATHOLIC CHURCH PAGE 2 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 8, 2009 [The LORD] tells the number of the stars and calls them by name. - Psalm 147:4 TIRELESS DISCIPLESHIP The Gospel of Mark, unlike those of Matthew and Luke, has no infancy narrative, nor does it have a lengthy prologue to introduce it, as John s Gospel does. In Mark s account, one could say, Jesus hits the ground running. The stories we ve been hearing these weeks come from the very first chapter of Mark, and they show us the public ministry of Jesus in its infancy. Today s account shows some of the strain or adjustment of his new life of preaching the reign of God, healing the sick, and casting out demons. Notice that after sunset, when darkness ended the workday, people brought the sick and possessed to Jesus. The following day he rose before dawn to get away by himself to pray, but to no avail. Simon Peter and the others don t just look for him, they pursue him, filled with the fervor that his ministry has incited. With the self-sacrificing example he gave until the end of his earthly life, he tells his followers that this is his whole purpose. Through Mark, he is also telling the early church, and he is telling us, that this is our purpose, our vocation: to be tireless in our pursuit of proclaiming the Good News, and in bringing the healing, reconciling touch of Christ to the world. FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ February 8, 2009 PAGE 3 FOCA Freedom of Choice Act Our new President and Congress face serious national challenges at this time, requiring all Americans to unite for the common good of all. This is no time to divide our nation by attacking the weakest and most powerless among us, or ignoring the pro-life values of millions of Catholics and other Americans. A bill in Congress called the Freedom of Choice Act, or FOCA, represents the most serious legislative threat to unborn children ever. FOCA would create a fundamental right to abortion that government could not limit but would be required to fund and support. It would overturn a broad range of pro-life policies currently allowed under Supreme Court s Roe v. Wade abortion decision: laws protecting parental involvement in an underage daughter s abortion decision, laws upholding conscience rights, limits on abortion funding, bans on partial-birth abortion, and so on. FOCA itself may become law, or the harmful policies it represents may become law one step at a time. In either case, we must oppose FOCA and all that it stands for. TODAY parishioners have an opportunity to sign and send postcards to their U.S. Representatives and two U.S. Senators. The message on the cards urges our federal elected officials to oppose FOCA and to retain existing laws against government funding and promotion of abortion. We ask that you complete two postcards each; postcards are available at each entrance of the church and may be given with the collection or to the Parish Office for mailing. For more information regarding FOCA, please contact the Parish Office, or visit www.nchla.org. Do you know anyone interested in knowing more about the Catholic Faith? Please tell them about RCIA. Adult inquiries for the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and/or Confirmation, their sponsors and all interested in learning more about the faith are invited to attend. Each session consists of a presentation followed by a discussion. The following topics will be presented at the next 3 sessions: Feb 8 Rite of Acceptance 9:30 AM Mass (Sun.)
