CHURCH OF ST. THERESA, BRONX JANUARY 23, 2011 THIRD SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME Anyone among you who aspires to greatness must serve the rest, whoever wants to rank first among you must serve the needs of all. That is, without question, one of the most radical sentences ever spoken. In the society of Jesus day the great people were those who had enough power and enough money to control the lives of other people. The important people had servants and slaves that catered to their every whim and waited on them hand and foot. And if we are honest, we will have to admit that our society is very similar to that. We also tend to think that greatness can be measured in terms of power and wealth that can be used to compel or to buy the services of other people. Jesus had a different idea. He dared to suggest that the greatest person at a banquet may not be the honored guest at the head of the table. It well could be one of those men and women who are out there pouring the coffee, serving the food, and cleaning up the tables after everyone else has gone home. The greatest person in school may not be the superintendent, or the principal, or even one of the teachers. It may be the custodian who loves his family, is loyal to his friends, sweeps the floors with a smile, and is always ready to help in any way he can. The Greatest person in a nation may not be the President, or the Prime Minister, or the King or Queen, or a member of congress. It may be a school teacher who, day after day, gives herself with sincere devotion to meet the needs of her students. The greatest person in a home is, most likely, not the wealthy, domineering person. It may be that person who quietly and joyfully cares for the needs of the family. The greatest person in a church may not be the priest in the pulpit. It may be one of the women in the nursery who helps care for the babies, or someone in the pew who, without noise of fanfare, help to meet the needs of the poor. We could multiply the examples, but I think we get the picture Jesus had a very unconventional concept of what it means to be a great person. Most of us, for the most part, have difficulty taking this idea of Jesus very seriously. Not many of us are truly convinced that greatness can be achieved only by service. Everything around us seems to argue against that. So we go through life grasping for prestige and power. And yet history can render a clear verdict. Let a hundred years go by, and no person has a chance of being thought truly great except the one who served and sought to help, for example Jesus Himself. In our own little part of the world, each of us can do the same thing if only we will. We will, probably never become famous. It is doubtful that a national holiday will ever be declared in our honor. But what does that matter? But if it is true greatness that we seek, there is only one way to achieve it. We must follow in the steps of him who said, the Son of Man has not come to be served but to serve and to give His life in ransom for many. ALUMNI OUTREACH St. Theresa School has just mailed our 1 st Annual Appeal to more than 2,400 alumni. It includes a letter from Fr. Grippo, a Story of Our School brochure, a return envelope and a savethe-date card for our planned All-Years Reunion on May7th 2011. As are many other Catholic elementary schools in the Archdiocese of New York, we are reaching out to our alumni to help us bridge-the-gap in continuing many of the excellent programs already in existence at the school and to provide new educational programs and projects, and more up-to-date equipment for our school s children. If you are an alumnus and haven t received the mailing (which was based on the lastknown address we had), please send an email to bhk@sttheresaschoolbronx.org and our Development Director, Barbara Harrison, will put your address on our list of alumni. Or, there are holders with brochures and envelopes in the back of the Church that you may send in so that you will be included in future mailings. We will be sending formal invitations to the St. Theresa Alumni Reunion early in 2011. ST. THERESA S CARD PARTY COMMITTEE The Card party committee is in the process of getting the card party underway for May and as they have done in the past years, they are asking for donations. Almost everyone receives something for Christmas that they don t want or can t use it s inevitable. If you have something that you don t need, we ask that you consider donating it to our Annual Card party. During these hard economic times, the donations from stores and businesses have dwindled substantially so these gifts truly make a big difference. We can use anything that is New or Unused such as toys to picture frames, candles, perfumes, wallets, etc. Nothing will go unused! Thank you for your consideration and all you do to help make the card party a success! Please remember only New Unused and Unopened Items will be accepted. Please bring your donations to the Rectory. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Takes place every Wednesday afternoon from 4:30 to 5:30PM in the Church. Please come and taste how good the Lord is! Please visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.
