John 3:16 Atonement Easter Sunday March 27, 2016 For God so loved the world that He GAVE His only Son For Jesus so loved the world that He willingly obeyed, He willing walked Calvary s road The reason for the sacrifice His love! The cause of the sacrifice our sin! We have all heard the story of Adam and Eve Gen. 3:1- And man was cast out of the garden; relationship with God was broken. Man had to hide, cover himself The first Adam Rom 5:12 through one man, sin entered SIN the basic problem of humanity Failing to give God His rightful place in our lives / missing the mark Rom. 3:23 for all have sinned The entire Bible points us to God s plan to redeem man, His plan to restore relationship, to save us from the consequences of our sin. God is holy! He is righteous and just! He can t abide sin or be in relationship with it God is love! God is gracious and merciful! He can t stand being separated from us Jesus the answer to this dilemma; the only place where God s holiness and wrath meet God s grace and love All have sinned. The wages of sin is death. Therefore we (sinners) must die or God is not just and holy. God begins to give us a glimpse of His plan in the OT ATONEMENT At one ment God and sinner are brought into relationship where they are at one In the OT kippur (H) covering each year the sins of the people were put on the head of a goat and sent into the wilderness and a blood sacrifice was offered their sins were covered for a year actually reminded people of their sins scapegoat See Heb. 10:3-4 Heb. 9:26 In the NT takes away sin!!! By sacrificing Himself ONCE FOR ALL Remember John: Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world The perfect sacrifice Without spot or wrinkle, without blemish, without sin The sacrifice the CROSS = the cure for man s condition Heb. 9:13-14 through the Holy Spirit

Our faith Nothing without Jesus totally unique to Christianity Nothing without the cross Atonement Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016 Heb. 10:14 the perfect sacrifice.perfect tense, complete, forever!!!!!!! This sacrifice: ordained by God; Jesus as Priest offered self on behalf of the human race Nothing omitted John 1:29 Sanctification progressive the process of receiving, appropriating, putting into effect the work of the cross TETELASTAI It is finished! perfectly perfect, completely complete! Everything needed is provided 2 Pet. 1:3 Is. 53:4-6 iniquity avon rebellion and all of its consequences Two other names for Jesus that are significant here:! Cor. 15:45, 47 The last Adam The second Adam the last Adam The second Adam evil inheritance came on Him; He completed the sinful race arose as second Adam, a new man, the Emmanuel race ON THE CROSS JESUS BORE OUR REBELLION AND ALL ITS EVIL CONSEQUENCES. THANK YOU, JESUS!!!!!!!! Key source for this teaching: Atonement, by Derek Prince ALL THE EVIL DUE TO US CAME UPON JESUS THAT ALL THE GOOD DUE TO JESUS MIGHT BE OFFERED TO US! Action: hand out all evil cards My picture of the cross..with light shining through a narrow slit Common perceptions of the work of the cross.(share thoughts.) HE WAS PUNISHED THAT WE MIGHT BE FORGIVEN The wages of sin death, punishment it is what we deserve because we are sinners part of our punishment has been separation from God Eph. 1:7,8 in Him we have redemption Redemption buy back ransom the price was paid His death in my place Verses in Hebrew the sacrifice for sin Is. 53:5 for our iniquities, the chastisement for our peace was upon Him Rom. 5:1 justified by faith, we have peace Col. 1:19,20 reconciled, as Jesus fully identified with men s sin Forgiveness A whole topic in itself we are called to forgive as Jesus forgave us There is actually no room for unforgiveness Forgiving yourself not necessarily a scriptural concept Receive the work of the cross, don t let His sacrifice be in vain ( it wasn t enough, Jesus, not for me ) JESUS WAS WOUNDED PHYSICALLY THAT WE WOULD BE HEALED PHYSICALLY. Is. 53:5 by His stripes we are healed Sozo (G) the word translated salvation saved Sozo is everything promised by the death of Jesus on the cross Salvation is not only the granting of eternal life; it is the liberation of a sinner from the bondage of his iniquity (self-rule) therefore it must alter lifestyle of sin and transform hearts

Salvation Rom. 1:16 2 Cor. 7:10 1 Thes. 5:9 Rev. 7:10 Heb. 2:3 Places where sozo is translated differently Mt. 9:21-22 healing Mk. 6:36 Lk. 8:35,36 deliverance Lk. 8:49-50 resurrection 2 Tim. 4:18 save and keep on saving In the OT, Is. 53:4 born our griefs = endured our pain Carried our sorrows = carried our sicknesses away WE ARE HEALED! The Bible never talks about healing in the future It is finished! The question shouldn t be is it God s will to heal us?, but how can I receive the healing already provided? He healed them all He, Himself the answer is not in you. Mt. 8:16,17 there is no distinction between healing and casting out demons (fulfilling Is 53) Warning: Heb. 2:3,4 neglect so great a salvation though we don t reject it, do we neglect it Do we know what it entails JESUS WAS MADE SIN WITH OUR SINFULNESS THAT WE MIGHT BE MADE RIGHTEOUS WITH HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS. Sin sinful acts we commit or omissions in our obedience commission and omission Rom. 3:23 all have sinned John 8:34 slaves to sin Rom. 6:18 slaves to righteousness John 8:36 free! We can never attain righteousness in our own effort.only by faith, only by the work of the cross Is. 53:10 an offering for sin the guilt offering of old Justified, make righteous not guilty 2 Cor. 5:21 Put on your robe of righteousness Is. 61:10 Satan tries desperately to get us to feel guilty NO! Is. 54:17 Rom. 8:1 JESUS DIED OUR DEATH THAT WE MAY SHARE HIS LIFE. The justice of God requires death we read that earlier in Rom.6:23 And now we finish the verse, but the gift of God is eternal life! Beware crying for justice we deserve death; we are completely living in grace. Story of woman who complained about her photo not doing her justice ; the photographer s response lady you don t want justice, you want grace Wages are earned God offers us unearned mercy GRACE Unmerited favor Mercy is the alternative to justice. He offers us life, eternal life! Abundant life! John 10:10 I have come that they may have life John 3:16 eternal life The exchange here literally represents a life given for a life Not only physically.jesus dies a physical death that my dead spirit might be raised to life. Jesus spiritually alive, puts on the physical to die physically Marcia spiritually dead, comes spiritually alive and carries that life even when her physical body dies 1 Cor. 15:45-56

EVERY CURSE THAT MIGHT HAVE COME ON US CAME ON JESUS THAT ALL THE BLESSINGS DUE HIM MIGHT BE MADE AVAILABLE TO US. Gal. 3:13,14 See Gal. 3:1 Abraham blessed in ALL things, every area of life Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. Paul was speaking to the Galatians with concern.bewitched baskano witchcraft O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified? (see in v. 5 these were spirit-filled Christians.does not keep us from deception) Something had obscured their vision of the cross, the place that Satan is defeated Col. 2:15 "Having disarmed principalities and powers,[jesus] made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in [the cross]." The Galatians became carnal 5:13-24 see the listed works of the flesh They moved into legalism, trying to be righteous by rules either attempt to achieve righteousness with God through rules or add requirements for salvation to what God has said Gal. 3:10 Gal. 3:13 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not continue in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them." cursed is everyone that hands on a tree.the full outworking of a curse the cross Guilt, shame, agony, forsaken, rejected, Darkness, death Curses and blessings are essentially words, word which carry authority. Deut. 28 Moses pronounces blessings and cursings Blessings and cursings continue unless broken When we have problems in our lives and struggle to find the cause, it might be a curse In 10 commandments worship idols, iniquity visited unto 3-4 generations In summary: BLESSINGS CURSINGS Personal exaltations humiliation Reproductiveness Barrenness Health sickness Prosperity/success poverty/failure Victory defeat Head not the tail Tail not the head decisions vs. dragged around Above not beneath beneath not above Indications of a curse: Mental/emotional breakdown Repeated, chronic sickness/heredity Female problems Breakdown of marriage, family Financial insufficiency Accident-prone Family history of suicide, unnatural death Essence of being under a curse frustration! Causes: Idolatry False religion Secret Societies Wrong attitude towards parents Injustice to weak Anti-Semitism (Gen. 12:3) Our own words

Words of others (especially authority figures) Release: Recognize Renounce Ps. 118:17 Repent Resist James 4:7 "Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you" Lord Jesus Christ, I believe that You are the Son of God and the only way to God the Father. I believe that You died on the cross for my sins and rose again from the dead. I believe that on the cross You were made sin with my sinfulness that I might be made righteous with Your righteousness. You were made a curse with any curse that might come upon me, that I might receive the blessing. And now, Lord, I come to You for deliverance from any such curse. I repent of any sins that have caused it to come, whether committed by me or by my ancestors. I receive Your forgiveness. I take my stand now against the devil and all his pressures and everything he wants to do against me. In the name of Jesus I resist him. I refuse to submit any longer to him. In the name of Jesus, I now release myself from any curse over my life. Because of what Jesus did for me on the cross, in His name I release myself, and I receive the release now by faith with thankfulness and praise. Lord, I thank You now. I praise You now. I believe You are faithful. I believe You are doing what I have asked You to do. I commit my life to You, that from now on Your blessing may rest upon me. Thank You, Lord Jesus! Thank You! Derek Prince. Atonement, Your Appointment with God (Kindle Locations 748-752). Kindle Edition. Col. 2:15 Jesus defeated the enemy JESUS ENDURED OUR POVERTY THAT WE MIGHT SHARE HIS ABUNDANCE 2 Cor. 8:9 though He was rich, yet He became poor You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich. 2 Cor. 9:8 all grace abound all-sufficiency, all things, abundance!!! God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, have an abundance for every good work. Abundance having enough for our own need and something left over to give to others But beware focusing too much on the material aspect of abundance Deut. 28:45, 47-48 hunger, thirst, nakedness, need fulfilled at the cross Jesus was hungry, thirsty, naked, in need "All these curses shall come upon you... because you did not obey the voice of the LORD your God... Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joy and gladness of heart, for the abundance of all things, therefore you shall serve your enemies, whom the LORD will send against you, in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in need of all things..." Cannot be more poor than that Levels of provision: insufficiency, sufficiency, abundance Acts 201:35 "I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, `It is more blessed to give than to receive." Abundance enough and left over to give.god wants us to experience the joy and blessing of giving Beware expecting poverty Generosity in giving Prov. 8: 17-18 another kind of abundance "I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently gently will find me. Riches and honor are with me, enduring riches and righteousness." Matt. 19:29 Prov. 13:7 Enduring riches "everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name's sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit everlasting life." turn from material riches purposely "There is one who makes himself rich, yet has nothing; and one who makes himself self poor, yet has great riches." 2 Cor. 6:4- Paul commends self and others in a variety of things.right priorities, more enduring riches as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as chastened, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things. Faith.love obedience Too much money

Pray with others JESUS ENDURED OUR SHAME THAT WE MIGHT IN TURN SHARE HIS GLORY. One of most prevalent emotional struggles today shame and rejection Opposite of shame, glory Heb. 2:10 Heb. 12:2 It was fitting for Him [God the Father], for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons [that is, you and me] to glory, to make the captain of their salvation [that is, Jesus] perfect through sufferings endured the cross, despising the shame looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith [or the originator and perfecter of our faith], who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Shame creates a prison. One of the most commons emotional problems of Christians and ashamed to be ashamed. Is. 53:3 He is despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows [literally, erally, pains] and acquainted with grief [sickness]. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Jesus shame naked, mocked, taunted, spit on. Sores, torn body,.(consider the pictures from The Passion of Christ) Ps. 69:7 For Your sake I have borne reproach; shame has covered my face. the whole chapter 1,2,4,8,21 Suffer from shame, hard to look in face Why do we experience shame? Humiliating experiences in the past Memories of past sins (before Christ) Sexual molestation/abuse Mt. 27:35 consider Jesus shame hard to look on His face They crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets: "They divided My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots. " Job 11:14-15 Job 22:26 lift face - shame removed "If iniquity were in your hand, and you put it far away... then surely you could lift up your face without spot; yes, could be steadfast, and not fear." Then you will have your delight in the Almighty, and lift up your face to God. Is there any shame in your life that keeps you from lifting up your face to God??? Christ paid the price.he gives us His glory! 1 Pet.1:10,11 the outworking of this exchange Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glories that would follow. JESUS ENDURED OUR REJECTION THAT WE MIGHT HAVE HIS ACCEPTANCE. Rejection a sense of being unwanted, unloved, always on the outside looking in most prevalent emotional wound today 1 John 4:19 we loved because He first loved us.love needs to be awakened Causes: *Is. 54:6 Is. 53:3 John 1:11 Mt. 27:45-47 breakdown of family relationships Rejection before birth Breaking of marriage* Physical appearances (world expectations and pressures, ) Bullying a pattern for all rejected Eph. 21:5-6 accepted in the Beloved prophetic picture of the cross He is despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows [or pains] and acquainted with grief [or sickness]. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. "He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him" rejected by His Father

Ps. 69:20-21 From the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness ness over all the land. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, "This Man is calling for Elijah!" Jesus died of a broken heart (he died quickly for a crucifixion ) Reproach has broken my heart, and I am full of heaviness; I looked for someone to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none. They also gave me gall for my food, and for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. Matt. 27:50-51 the veil was rent the way to the Father open.acceptance!!! Eph. 1:3-4 Eph. 1:5-6 Chosen Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world... ultimate acceptance... having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He has made us accepted in the Beloved. Accepted = charitoo..means highly favored Feel rejected? Don t try to do more He has done it all! ON THE CROSS OUR OLD MAN WAS PUT TO DEATH THAT THE NEW MAN MIGHT COME TO LIFE IN US INSTEAD. First 8 what the cross has done for us Now, what has the cross done in us? The old man the sinful nature that we have inherited from Adam, a rebel Mt. 3:10 "Even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees." Is. 53:6 our root problem rebellion against God All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way; and the LORD has laid on Him [Jesus] the iniquity of us all. God s solution execution.our old man crucified with Christ. Rom. 6:6-7 execution took place on the cross of Christ Our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. This is today s rebel.not just historic We must know that our old man was crucified with Christ!!! Rom. 6:8-10 V 11 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. the application Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Dead to sin it has no further attraction to me, it no longer draws me, no more power over me. How? By faith in what Jesus did on the cross The middle cross was for me.my old man crucified in Him. Eph.4:22-24 (to people already saved) put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in righteousness and true holiness. Old man - part of the devil s deception Adam and Eve believed a lie.produces corruption Corruption is irreversible.must be put to death, made new There is no way to reform the old man he must die! The way to true discipleship is through the cross of Jesus Christ. There we surrender our old life in exchange for the resurrection life. 2 Cor. 5:17 "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation" 1 Pet. 1:23 the nature of the new creation [You have] been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever. The nature of the life is the nature of the seed that it comes out of James 1:18 "Of His own will He brought us forth [or begot us again] by the word of truth." 1 John 3:9 "Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God." 1 John 5:4 "Whatever is born of God overcomes the world."

Gal. 2:20 Lk. 9:23 deny self, take up cross Picking up our cross is not necessarily an unpleasant expectation the cross is the process and place that keeps us completely dependent on God we refuse to do anything for any reason other than to please Jesus. Titus 2:11-14 The cross gives us the power to say no to lies, sinful attitudes and patterns of behavior, and fears about what others think, plus say yes to Jesus.
