ASENSION LUTHERAN HURH THE LUTHERAN HURH MISSOURI SYNOD LITTLETON, OLORADO September 25, 2016 10:30 a.m. We do well to listen throughout our lives. arents try their best to teach this to children at an early age. The ability to listen is a quality that affects relationships, vocations, and general communication. The same goes in our relationship, work, and communication with the Lord. We do well to listen to Him. The people in Amos s time learned this as the Lord spoke through him many woes and warnings. This is why aul writes clear directions for the noble task of overseers, through whom people are to listen to the Lord. Even Jesus parable of the rich man and Lazarus reminds us that a day is coming when it will be too late. The Word of God teaches us that now is the time to listen, to repent, and to believe. NINETEENTH SUNDAY AFTER ENTEOST

GATHERING SONGS ANIENT WORDS DeShazo Holy words long preserved for our walk in this world; They resound with God's own heart, O, let the ancient words impart; Words of life, words of hope, Give us strength, help us cope; In this world where'er we roam, ancient words will guide us home. Ancient words, ever true, changing me, changing you; We have come with open hearts, O let the ancient words impart. Holy words of our faith handed down to this age, came to us through sacrifice; O, heed the faithful words of hrist; Holy words long preserved for our walk in this world; They resound with God's own heart; O, let the ancient words impart. Ancient words, ever true, changing me, changing you; We have come with open hearts, O let the ancient words impart. Ancient words, ever true, changing me, changing you; We have come with open hearts, O let the ancient words impart. O let the ancient words impart. MORE REIOUS THAN SILVER Lord, You are more precious than silver. Lord, You are more costly than gold. Lord, You are more beautiful than diamonds, And nothing I desire compares with You.

Divine Service astoral Greeting ASTOR LARSON Hymn of Worship As The Deer Nystrom As the deer panteth for the water, So my soul longeth after Thee. You alone are my hearts desire, And I long to worship Thee. You alone are my strength, my shield; To You alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my hearts desire, And I long to worship Thee. You're my friend and You are my brother even though you are a King. I love you more than any other, So much more than anything. You alone are my strength, my shield; To You alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my hearts desire, And I long to worship Thee. I want You more than gold or silver, only You can satisfy. You alone are the real joy Giver, And the apple of my eye. You alone are my strength, my shield; To You alone may my spirit yield. You alone are my hearts desire, And I long to worship Thee. INVOATION In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. ONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your steadfast love; according to Your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. As the Lord s prophet Amos spoke to the people of Israel, so His Word speaks to us today: Woe to those who are at ease in Zion. Woe to those who lie on beds of ivory and stretch themselves out on their couches, who drink wine in bowls and anoint themselves with the finest oils, but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph! Together we confess our sins:

Gracious and ever-providing Lord, we are by nature sinful. We are often complacent and filled with apathy in our worship and prayers. We have not loved You with our whole heart, and we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of Jesus hrist, forgive our sins, cleanse our hearts, and renew our spirits, that we may obey You and serve our neighbors with joy and gladness all the days of our life, through Jesus hrist, our Lord. Beloved in the Lord, God has heard our confession, and because of the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus hrist, He has answered with good news. As a called and ordained servant of hrist and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. rayer of the Day The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God, You are the strength of all who trust in You, and without Your aid we can do no good thing. Grant us the help of Your grace that we may please You in both will and deed; through Jesus hrist, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

SERVIE OF THE WORD L Old Testament: Amos 6:1-7 Woe to you who are complacent in Zion, and to you who feel secure on Mount Samaria, you notable men of the foremost nation, to whom the people of Israel come! Go to alneh and look at it; go from there to great Hamath, and then go down to Gath in hilistia. Are they better off than your two kingdoms? Is their land larger than yours? You put off the evil day and bring near a reign of terror. You lie on beds inlaid with ivory and lounge on your couches. You dine on choice lambs and fattened calves. You strum away on your harps like David and improvise on musical instruments. You drink wine by the bowlful and use the finest lotions, but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph. Therefore you will be among the first to go into exile; your feasting and lounging will end. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! Epistle: 1 Timothy 6:6-19 But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. eople who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of hrist Jesus, who while testifying before ontius ilate made the good confession, I charge you to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus hrist, which God will bring about in his own time God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. ommand those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. ommand them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to

share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. L The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! Hymn of the Day Be Thou My Vision Be Thou my vision, O lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me save that Thou art Thou my best thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light. Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true Word; I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord; Thou my great Father, I Thy true son, Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one. Riches I heed not, my victory won, Thou mine inheritance, now and always; Thou and Thou only, first in my heart, High King of heaven, my Treasure Thou art. High King of heaven, my victory won, May I reach heaven s joys, O bright heaven s Sun, Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all. ongregation, please stand. The Holy Gospel: Luke 16:19-31 The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke the sixteenth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. "There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. "The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by

his side. So he called to him, `Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.' "But Abraham replied, `Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.' "He answered, `Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.' "Abraham replied, `They have Moses and the rophets; let them listen to them.' "`No, father Abraham,' he said, `but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.' "He said to him, `If they do not listen to Moses and the rophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' Sermon Impassioned Love ASTOR LANGNESS Text: Revelation 3:14-22 NIENE REED LSB (Inside back-cover) RAYER OF THE HURH Let us pray for the whole people of God in hrist Jesus and for all people according to their needs. Lord God, like the people to whom Your prophet Amos spoke, You have taught us through Your Word that the pursuit of a self-centered and complacent faith is not what You have intended for us. Rather, You call us to walk in Your will and ways for the furthering of Your kingdom and the loving of our neighbors. We praise You for Your wisdom, Lord. You know our struggles and our weaknesses and how easily we are deterred from Your will. Empower us to live a life focused on faith, love, care for others, endurance, and joy in You. Lord God, Jesus taught us that there is no eternal value in placing the pursuit of riches as the priority of our life as it leads to a path of separation from You. Strengthen our faith, Lord. Teach us to rely on You rather than our own pursuits and interests. Strengthen us through the work of Your Spirit in us. Grant that those whom You have called and placed as overseers and leaders in Your places of worship may faithfully fulfill the calling in which You have placed them that they may speak Your Word in confidence. Grant that each person in every vocation serve You and others in Your name all the days of their life. Lord God, let the cries of all in need come before You, [especially...]. By Your merciful goodness, grant healing to their bodies and peace to their souls. omfort and support all who are burdened and sorrowful, that in all their sadness, faith may remain firm. THE OFFERING IN HRIST ALONE Townend Getty In hrist alone my hope is found. He is my light, my strength, my song. This ornerstone, this solid ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease. My omforter, my All in All, Here in the love of hrist I stand. In hrist alone, who took on flesh. Fullness of God in helpless babe. This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save. 'Till on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied. For every sin on Him was laid, Here in the death of hrist I live. There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain; Then, bursting forth in glorious Day, up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory, sin s curse has lost its grip on me; For I am His and He is mine, bought with the precious blood of hrist. No guilt in life, no fear in death. This is the power of hrist in me. From life's first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No power of hell, no scheme of man, an ever pluck me from His hand. 'Till He returns or calls me home, Here in the power of hrist I'll stand. Offertory rayer Let us pray, Heavenly Father, receive these gifts, symbols of the time, abilities, and resources we place at Your disposal in thanks for Your eternal grace, mercy, and peace. Receive them for the sake of Your Son, Jesus hrist our Lord. HOLY OMMUNION AT ASENSION The Lord, our Host, invites to his Supper those who are baptized into the hristian faith, confess him as Savior, have examined themselves, truly repent of sins, believe the Risen Lord is present in the sacrament with his true body and blood, and resolve to live faithfully and obediently. SERVIE OF THE SARAMENT The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus hrist, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of pow r and might! Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna, Hosanna. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The Words of onsecration In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. The Lord s rayer LSB (Inside back-cover)
