A LENTEN PARISH MISSION March 4, 2013 March 6, 2013 DIRECTED BY Fr. Pablo Straub, C.Ss.R. Fr. Pablo Straub, C.Ss.R. A Redemptorist and missionary priest, Fr. Pablo has spent the last 20 years in rural Mexico serving the poorest of the poor. He is a noted author and a producer of acclaimed Catholic audios and videos. His devout, dynamic and humorous presentations are often aired on Mother Angelica s EWTN television and radio networks. A SPECIAL INVITATION FROM ST. MARTIN de PORRES CATHOLIC CHURCH TO ENRICH YOUR LENTEN JOURNEY Fr. Pablo will preach at all Weekend Masses March 2 nd and March 3rd Morning Session begins promptly after 8:30 Mass Evening Session begins promptly after 5:30 Mass FASTING & ABSTINENCE REGULATIONS FOR LENT Ash Wednesday & Good Friday; are days of fast and abstinence. Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age through age 59. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest should be consulted. Fasting almsgiving. and prayer are the three disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance, and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter. Stations of the Cross At 7:00pm Every Friday during Lent

Mediatrix of Grace The motherhood of Mary in the order of grace continues uninterruptedly from the consent which she loyally gave at the Annunciation and which she sustained without wavering beneath the cross, until the eternal fulfillment of all the elect. Taken up to heaven she did not lay aside this saving office but by her manifold intercession continues to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation.... Therefore the Blessed Virgin is invoked in the Church under the titles of Advocate, Helper, Benefactress, and Mediatrix. (CCC 696) As Mediatrix of grace, does this mean Mary is the source of grace? According to the Catechism, Mary s function as mother of men in no way obscures or diminishes this unique mediation of Christ, but rather shows its power. But the Blessed Virgin s salutary influence on men... flows forth from the superabundance of the merits of Christ, rests on it, and draws all its power from it. (CCC 970) Among mere human s, Mary is the ultimate example of humility and obedience, which shines forth in her complete willingness to accept the fullness of God s grace as it was uniquely offered to her. She was created for a purpose and accepted it fully. God creates each of us with a unique character and purpose in the plan of salvation. Unlike Mary, we are marred by original sin. Therefore, our frequent drift into sin causes us to be altered from the intention of God our creator. Extreme forms of this can be seen throughout history. Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini... devoid of God s grace, people become pawns of Satan. Not what God intended in his creature, but an altered form that God allows by granting us free will. To some degree all of us sinners alter ourselves from God s intent. The more we do it the less we allow God s grace to enter. We envy, and thereby change ourselves to acquire that which we envy. We covet, and thereby change ourselves to attain that which we covet. We lust, and thereby change ourselves to experience the object of our lust. We feel powerless, and thereby change ourselves to obtain greater power. So does Mary decide who gets what when it comes to God s grace? Not exactly; that would put the blame for our lack of grace on her decisions. God has created us to receive superabundance. Not the same for everyone, but different according to his will. Different according to the unique qualities he created in us, knowing exactly what we need to be completely fulfilled; different for each, but no less for any. But Mary is Mediatrix. She is the only mere human being without the stain of original sin and thus was willing and able to be filled to overflowing for her unique purpose in God s plan. Mary therefore participates in salvation history as a powerful representation of our way of doing the same. As a loving mother guides a child as a helper in the world, Mary guides us as Mother and Mediatrix or Helper with our Lord, in hope that we will be willing and able to receive the superabundance of God s grace. As God entered the world in human flesh through Mary, we may enter the fullness of Christ through her as well. Hail Mary, full of grace! EVANGELISM IN ACTION: Pray for Mary s help and open yourself to grace, not in doubt or hesitation but with great expectation! Article written by Keith Thompson. Please send your comments, thoughts and suggestions to newevangelism@gmail.com or call Keith at 772-631-2080. There will be NO Lenten Dinner this Friday, March 8, due to the Koinonia retreat taking place at that time.

Book Signing by Paul Turk Saturday, March 9 and Sunday, March 10 Paul Turk, a former trial lawyer and parishioner at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Wellington for 33 years will be having a book signing after the Masses on March 9 and 10 for his newest book, Love On Trial. The book signing will take place outside the Caritas Gift Shop. The novel is the trilogy to his first two books, Faith Beyond The Trials, and Trials of Hope. Paul continues to follow the lives of John and Anna Taylor and their family. In the book, John Taylor has taken on a divorce case where child custody of three young siblings is at stake. While the divorce litigation is ongoing, the Taylors have the opportunity to make a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land with the priest who has been a source of strength and inspiration to them. It is a journey which will forever change their lives. Although the book is fictional, the scenes involving the Holy Land are based on a Pilgrimage Paul made there in November 2011. The cost for Love On Trial, is $15.00. Both of Paul s first two books will also be available for sale at the same price. For more information about Paul and his books go to www.paulturkbooks.com. 40 Cans for Lent Appeal 8048 St. Martin de Porres Council The 40 Cans for Lent Appeal is a food drive coordinated by your Knights of Columbus Council. February 13-March 24. 40 Days for Life is a peaceful approach to showing local communities the consequences of abortion in their neighborhoods, friends and families. A desire to cooperate with God in carrying out of His plan for the end of abortion in America. The 40-day campaign tracks Biblical history, where God used 40-day periods to transform individuals, communities and the entire world. From Noah in the flood to Moses on the mountain to the disciples after Christ's resurrection. It s clear that God sees the transformative value of His people in meeting a 40-day challenge. 40 Days uses a 3-pronged effort: Can't you spend 1 hour with me? *Prayer and fasting: Christ told us that some demons can only be driven out by prayer and fasting. The two go hand in hand. Prayer keeps us rooted in the fact that it is our desire to carry out God's will. Fasting is a sacrifice that helps us reach beyond our own limitations with God's help. Fasting is not a Christian diet; it is a form of physical prayer. You can fast from food, TV, alcohol... anything that separates you from God. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? *Constant vigil: The most visible component of 40 Days for Life is a constant prayer vigil outside Planned Parenthood It is a peaceful, prayerful, safe witness to the clinic's patients and staff, and to the entire community, that evil is in our midst and with God's help, it will be defeated. We need people to sign up for WEDNESDAYS 3-5 and FRIDAYS 8-10 Emerald Plaza US Route 1. Go out in the world. *Community outreach: During 40 Days for Life, the pro-life message is actively taken to the community through a Prayerful and Peaceful Vigil. Please join us in our peaceful prayerful Vigil in front of Planned Parenthood, (this organization is performing CHEMICAL Abortions) Wed. 3-5 and Fri 8-10. Emerald Plaza Rt#1 The cult of Blessed Sacrament represents the spiritual environment within which the community can celebrate the Eucharist correctly and truthfully.
