FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 9, 2017 THE HIGH PLAINS PREACHER Welcome to the High Plains Preacher, stories about the Bible, high wind, fast horses, lack of moisture and other elements of life in the Texas Panhandle. What s in a Name? by Fr. Jim Schmitmeyter There are lots of good reasons to be Catholic. Last week, being Catholic helped me name two newborn calves. I drove out to my ranch on my day off and discovered that my two cows each had a calf. I was not expecting the calves to be born this this soon. But there they were: two calves on wobbly legs each nursing their own mother. I m not on Facebook or Snapchat but I grabbed my phone anyway and took a couple pictures. There are few things more satisfying than a healthy calf in a pasture full of grass. Normally I do not name my calves, but the feast day of Saints Peter and Paul was just around the corner so I named them Peter and Paul. Upon closer inspection, I had to make a slight adjustment from Peter and Paul to Peter and Paula. I m not sure which one arrive first but Paula seems a bit smarter. When my dog ran toward her, she headed straight for her mother. Peter, on the other hand, froze in place and waited for his mother to take after the dog. The Creation Story in the Book of Genesis tells us that Adam named all the animals. Not personal names like Peter, Paul, or Fido, but generic names like cat, horse, dog, cow and chicken. Biblical scholars point out that, in the Hebrew mindset, to name something was to exert control or dominion over the thing named. I have always found this explanation incomplete if not incorrect. It seems cold and calculating and I suspect that some of those scholars might be lacking in the experience of animal husbandry. If any of them had been raised on a farm, they would know that owning an animal means a lot more than taking control of them. It means taking care of them I intend to take care of Peter and Paula as best I can. I thank God for their birth, their health and their agility and playfulness. I name them in the manner of the first Adam and hope that my care for them reflects the compassion of the Second Adam, the one who referred to himself as the Good Shepherd who calls his sheep each by name. The High Plains Preacher can be heard on KDJW, St. Valentines Radio 1360 at 12:30 each Friday and 11:30 on Saturday.
