Leonard District Superintendent lwleonard@tnnaz.org February 2014 PROGRESS IN PARTNERSHIP January was filled with exciting progress in the newest partnership pursuit for the Tennessee District Church of the Nazarene. As I reported in the January issue of the Tennessee District newsletter, we are studying the potential of a merger partnership with the Mississippi District Church of the Nazarene. The Board of General Superintendents has given unanimous approval for the two districts to study the possibility of merging into one district. Acting on the guidelines from Dr. Gustavo Crocker, the jurisdictional general superintendent, a Merger Commission was appointed to begin the process. Mississippi representatives were Dr. Crawford Howe, interim district superintendent; clergy representative, Pastor Scott Samuell; and lay representatives, Mr. Chuck Farnham and Mr. Henry Greer. Tennessee representatives were Dr. Larry Leonard, district superintendent; clergy representative, Dr. Mark Lindstrom; and lay representatives, Dr. Gerald Skinner and Mr. Michael Johnson. The Merger Commission met on January 20, 2014, in Memphis at Grace Church of the Nazarene. Dr. Bob Broadbooks, USA/Canada regional director, convened the meeting at the direction of Dr. Crocker. The commission team voted unanimously to name the newly proposed district the MidSouth District Church of the Nazarene, should the two districts approve the merger at the respective district assemblies on April 10 for Mississippi and on June 25 for Tennessee. To provide appropriate strategy preparation for the presentation of this merger, the commission appointed six subcommittees comprised of equal numbers of district members from Mississippi and Tennessee, with a balance of lay and clergy representatives. The subcommittees responsibility is to develop the how to of merger. The six subcommittees were Mission/Vision, Finance and Legal, Communication/Technology, Mission Area Coordinators, Operations/Auxiliaries, and Events. On February 3-4, 55 representatives from Mississippi and Tennessee met at Memphis Grace Church of the Nazarene to develop the strategy for merger implementation. Following each prayer and devotional session and each committee meeting, the power of the Holy Spirit was extremely evident. Members were constantly commenting on how the Spirit of the Lord had brought such camaraderie and oneness of spirit. Truly, excitement is in the air for these two districts. I will give you another update when the subcommittees reports are edited and submitted to the Ministry Resource Center. The commission will meet at least one more time to finalize our reports, which will go to the Mississippi District assembly April 10, followed by a vote of the district assembly delegates regarding merging with Tennessee. The Tennessee District will hear the report and recommendation and will vote on the merger at its district assembly, pending the approval of the Mississippi District. Please continue to pray diligently regarding this partnership opportunity. We sincerely seek the perfect will of God.

He is a prolific speaker and educator, teaching in numerous conferences across America, Europe and Africa. He has also spoken at the European pastors conference in Barcelona, and taught in Spain, France, Italy and Portugal. He has recently been invited to present a paper at the annual roundtable on faith and religion at Oxford University, England. Gene will speak twice and lead a workshop at Improve Your Serve. Mark 14:9 NCV It is my favorite picture in the Scriptures of a passionate worshipper. If you have ever seen the woman anointing Jesus feet dramatized, it is a moving experience to see this lavish display of adoration. When I get to heaven, I want to fall at His feet. Likewise, if you have ever participated in a foot washing, you will be impacted by following Christ s example of loving service to fellow believers. Our feet represent our going and Jesus went about doing good during His short life on earth. We can go and do good deeds representing Him during our life on earth. Nazarenes have named their love gifts for buildings and real estate as our Alabaster Offering because we want to worship Jesus in our giving as this woman did physically with her bottle of costly perfume. I trust your church will be generous in pouring the perfume on places in all the world that need land and buildings for Kingdom expansion. We can hardly wait to be together on March 1 for our annual Improve Your Serve day at Nashville First. It has proven to be an exciting day of training and inspiration. If you have Crisis Care Kits, they can be brought that day and the district NMI will help transport them (cost is $18/ banana box of 6 kits or $3/kit made out to TN NMI) rather than you mailing them. Every church can do this and we will reach our goal of 100 boxes (600 kits)! NMI: Nazarene Missions International On March 7 we will be sending another team to Cuba. Columbia Grace Church is leading the way with others from our district going along. Wouldn t it be great to have sent at least one person from every church on a trip to Cuba during our 3-year partnership? Who might be the one to go next year from YOUR congregation?! I hope you don t mind me sharing a personal note and photo this month. Michael and I celebrated 40 years of marriage and my 62nd birthday on a Disney cruise in January. We know we are senior adults but we re kids at heart and this was a delight! We are grateful to God for His grace through the years. Thanks for being our Tennessee district friends. We cherish your part in our lives through more than half of these years, living here since 1990!

I hope that you are staying warm as we finish off the last few weeks of winter. This was in my devotion s this morning and I thought of you all as I read it. Ephesians 3:20-21 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. I have to be honest with you today, God has done immeasurably more than I could imagine within the TNYI this year already. I want to give Him the glory for allowing us to reach all generations including the youth that we have the chance to minister to. I have walked away from each of our events this year and been in awe of the way that our students have worshiped, learned, and grown together. Here are some highlights and what else is in store. This year s event was Amazing! Thank you to Jamin Wentworth and his team for not only giving us a venue to compete but allowing us to worship and understand why we do this event. To use our gifts from God, for God. Thank you to Trevecca Community for opening up their building. One of the highlights of the weekend was a duet sung by two ladies that have different home churches. They realized each others love of music last year when they competed against each other, this year they teamed up! What a great display of what our district is intended to look like. We may worship in different home churches but we are all one big TNYI family!
