The Ascension of the Lord Saturday and Sunday May 27-28, 2017 www.stjudecatholic.org And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age. (From Mt. 28:16-20) Dear Friends: Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. Many of us will remember that this feast was, for many years, celebrated on a Thursday and known as Ascension Thursday. A few years ago, however, it was transferred to the Seventh Sunday of Easter because of its importance. It was on the Seventh Sunday of Easter, also, that I celebrated my first Mass. It was on May 15, 1988 at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. As I look back on 29 years, I am grateful for so much. Thank you again for your prayerful support along the way. The Ascension is a moment that leaves us with a goodbye and a promise. Jesus, in the sight of his disciples, ascended into Heaven to be with the Father forever. No doubt, for them it was probably a moment of many emotions: sadness, fear, and probably confusion too. We experience many emotions like these whenever we face a moment in which we have to say goodbye. Any change in life brings some sort of a farewell with it: the loss of someone we love, the ending of a relationship, perhaps moving, changing schools, or changing jobs. Graduation season is a time when parents certainly experience this. On one hand, they re proud of their children, but on the other, they probably experience a lot of anxiety about their children going out into the world. One of our men s sharing groups that meets on Wednesday mornings is currently reading and discussing Sr. Joyce Rupp s book, entitled, Praying Our Goodbyes. If you haven t read it, I highly recommend it and can even help you obtain a copy of it. In her book, she tells us that we must endure many goodbyes in life so that we can say hello again to something new. Jesus promise to us, as we read in the verse printed at the top of this column, is that he is with us every step of the way. We are able to endure change in our life, whatever form it takes, because we know that we do not make the journey alone. I hope you have a great week!
