Holy Martyrs and La Sagrada Familia have had a long and deep relationship since the two parishes became connected through the diocesan Church in the City initiative many years ago. The hope of that initiative was that suburban and poor urban parishes could partner in ways that would help each community grow and thrive. The parishioners at La Sagrada Familia come from some of the poorest neighborhoods in the diocese and Holy Martyrs has historically responded at times when that parish has struggled to serve its people. One of the ways La Sagrada Familia has tried to help its parishioners is by providing van transportation to ensure that those who do not have a vehicle or are unable to drive will be able to attend Mass and other parish functions. The old van became unusable more than a year ago and La Sagrada Familia has been working since then to replace it so it can continue to care for that special segment of the community. The people of that parish have stepped up to contribute toward the purchase of a van but the funds raised have fallen short of what is needed. The people of Holy Martyrs have always shown themselves responsive to people in need. This is an opportunity to help our sister parish, respond to the poor in a practical way, and make a difference that will last for years. Parish Staff Father Stephen Dohner Pastor Father Robert F. Eleventh in Ordinary Time Parish News Seeking Baptism or Think You May Want to Become Catholic? If you ve been thinking about becoming Catholic, we invite you to look more deeply into what makes Catholics tick by participating in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) at Holy Martyrs. RCIA is a process that facilitates and deepens adult conversion to Jesus Christ by providing a way for people to come together to learn more about God in their lives and about the Catholic Church. RCIA is for those who are unbaptized, or those who have been baptized but were not formed in the Christian faith Our process provides a pressure-free, non-judgmental environment to explore what it means to live a spiritual life and to catch a glimpse of what that spiritual life looks like within the Catholic Church. Sessions are initially held on Tuesdays at 7:15 p.m. and individuals are welcome to start attending at any time during the year. After a period of time, those sessions will move to mornings. Some of the sessions even entail going to other sites throughout the Greater Cleveland area to explore the richness of our religious heritage. For more information and/or to register, please contact Janet at 330-722-6633 or jpayton@holymartyrs.net. Eleventh in Ordinary Time Parish School of Religion Parish School of Religion For families who will have a child preparing for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist in 2016/17; the preparation time for these sacraments begins in the first grade. We would like to be able to provide an opportunity for all our children to have a spot held for them. Parents are asked to contact the office of Faith Formation to register if you haven't received our online registration email. CONFIRMATION OCTOBER 2016 Confirmation Interviews continue. Candidates are requested to bring their journal and bible. Holy Martyrs will be celebrating the Sacrament of Confirmation on, October 9, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Practice for Confirmation will be on, October 2, 2016 at 12:45 p.m. Candidates and sponsors meet in Martyrs Hall for both events. Online registration for next year s PSR classes has begun. If you did not receive an email about this and would like to register your child, please contact the PSR office. We would need your child s name and parents current email address. Tend and Befriend Young children delight in helping and they love doing for others. We have learned about fight or flight in Psychology 101, but tend and befriend is a new concept recently discovered in the scientific world. Our children are mixed bags. One minute our children are squabbling over whose turn it is and the next minute they are sharing their favorite toy. It is important to recognize that they have both sides, and if we build upon our positive traits, we have a far enhanced inner landscape through which to relate and thrive in our world. Children return the same kindness that we give to them. And, what is more, they pass it along! They create right action. The Buddhists call this samyak, the Jews call it tikkun olam, and Christians call it mercy and charity. We must acknowledge and nurture our children s natural, generous spirit, and compliment them on their generosity. The list is endless. They are all simple acts of kindness. But they are the building blocks of spiritual growth. ~Miller, Lisa, Ph D. The Spiritual Child. New York: St. Martin s Press, 2015.
