Christ Lutheran News May, 2017 A Mother s Prayer ~Ruth H Underhill Make my children sweet, Lord, In thy tender loving eyes; Keep them ever healthy And please, Lord, make them wise. Make them kind and gentle, Lord, Toward others round about; Place within them faith in thee; Never let them doubt. Make my children patient, Lord. Let them always share The blessings you have given them With those in need of care. Give them tender loving hearts As the great love sent from thee; Make them happy, filled with joy, And always let them thankful be. We will seek God s will, share God s love, and serve as Christ s people.

From Pastor Ted s Desk... Each of us was given grace according to the measure of Christ s gift. --Ephesians 4:7 What should I do with my life? This is a question that many graduates wrestle with this time of year, as they face nearly limitless possibilities for the future. It is a question that any of us might ask at any age, though, as we wonder if we are using our gifts in the best possible way. At our Stewardship services the weekend of April 22 and 23 we spoke of there being three movements of Stewardship: Down, as God blesses us with all that we have and all that we are; In as we seek to recognize the specific gifts that we have been given, and Out as we use those gifts in service to God and neighbor. 3. Try new things Be open to classes, or internships, or other opportunities that stretch you, even if you aren t sure that it really fits you. It may help you discover new, unknown gifts that you have. Or, you may discover that that area really is not right for you. Either discovery can be helpful! 4. Ask others Talk to a trusted friend, family member, or someone else who knows you well. What do they see as your gifts? What have they noticed you doing well at, or that you seem to enjoy doing? Often it is easier to recognize someone else s gifts than our own, so an outside set of eyes can be useful. May God help us all to recognize the gifts that we have been given, in order that we might use those gifts in service to God and neighbor! ~ Pastor Ted I mentioned that the inward motion can help us recognize our gifts not just for service within the church, but for serving God in daily life. Unfortunately, while it is relatively easy to recognize tangible blessings such as health, land, or money on hand, it is often harder for us to recognize and identify our own talents that God would have us use to serve him. Here are four suggestions: 1. Pray about it Ask God to guide your discernment and decision making process. 2. Follow your passions and your abilities What gets you excited? What do you find comes easily to you? These may well be signs of your gifts. How might they be used to serve God and benefit others? 4 5

Financial Information Giving Options... On this page you will find a brief overview of the month s offerings. It is our goal to provide you with actual, updated information about Christ Lutheran s financial status. Following our annual meeting, the congregation voted on the 2017 budget. The budgeted amount for general offerings breaks down to $21,978.43 each month to cover our anticipated ministry expenses. In addition we will need $1,982.02 each month to meet our Synod Mission Support goal. ~Ronda Radke, Treasurer & Dawn Mouw, Office Manager Many of us have discovered how helpful automatic electronic payments can be for those really important commitments we don t want to forget the mortgage, insurance, utilities, etc. Our gifts to the Church are also really important matters which could be budgeted and scheduled in this way. Our donations are a response to God s blessings, and fund the ministry of the Church in our congregation and throughout the world. Automatic electronic giving assures that our support of the church continues even when we are vacationing, home sick, or snow-bound. April Here s a look at where we ended March: Beginning Balance: $ 781.34 Receipts: $ 31,245.17 Expenses: $ 32,241.30 Ending Balance: $ (214.79) The gray bar shows our actual offerings through April 30. The black bar is our budgeted offering total. General Offerings: February-April, 2017 Online Giving Recognizing that some of us prefer to use our credit card for most transactions, the Stewardship Committee is encouraging you to use your smartphone to scan this QR code which will take you directly to the church website christinslayton.weebly.com You will be able to quickly add your personal information on this secure site. Automatic Giving Another option for automatic giving is to withdraw your donation directly from either your checking or savings account. You can choose to have your donation taken out either on the 15th, or on the last day of the month, or at both times. Forms are available on the shelf in the narthex or on our website. Once you have completed the form, please return it to the church office. March Feb $5,000 $10,000 $15,000 $20,000 $25,000 Feb March April Actual $12,969.66 $22,972.04 $23,354.38 Budget $21,978.43 $21,978.43 $21,978.43 IRA Distributions If you are 70 1/2 or older, you can make "qualified charitable distributions" to the church and not include the IRA distribution as part of your taxable income. 14 New Members Classes We have scheduled two classes for people who are interested in becoming members of our congregation. They will be held at 7:00 PM on Tuesdays, May 9 th and May 16 th in the Chapel Lounge straight in from the parking lot door. These classes will briefly review some basics of our faith as Christians and also who we are as Lutheran Christians. Finally, we will give people an orientation to our ministries in this congregation, and ways that they might become involved. These classes are open to anyone including longtime members. If you know of someone who might be interested in joining Christ Lutheran, please call Pastor Ted or Pastor Dawn so that we might be able to give them a specific invitation. What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson God s Blessings, Max! Max Whitehead has informed us that he has made a shift in career goals, and is intending to prepare for ordained ministry! He is working through the South Dakota Synod of our ELCA on the candidacy process, which follows students through seminary as they prepare for ministry. Please support him with your prayers. Max writes, Thanks to you and the congregation for all you have done for me and will continue to do for me! It involves the opportunities we have and the choices that we make. The WELCA organization and the Health Ministry Team are pairing up again to present a panel program on Tuesday, June 13 at 7 PM at Christ Lutheran to help us look at this topic of living well. We have invited three people to share information with us in our journey. There will also be time for questions.
