St. Rose of Lima Church 312 Ridgedale Avenue East Hanover, New Jersey 07936 www.saintroseoflimachurch.org Sixth Sunday of Easter May 6, 2018 The last few weeks have been busy and joyful. On Thursday, April 26 th Bishop Serratelli came to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation. We had a beautiful celebration and our 59 Confirmandi are filled with the Holy Spirit. My congratulations to the Confirmandi and to their parents, sponsors and grandparents. As I said in my closing remarks, it really takes a village to prepare a young person for life. Many have given our young people the great foundation of their Catholic faith and now through the grace of God they can pass it along. A big thank you to our Youth Coordinator, Lisa Paradiso and her great team: Alex Keenan, Peggy Leo, Kelly Robertazzi, Tanya D Souza, and our parish staff. A big thanks to our 10 th grade catechists: Danielle Batanjany, Lisa Krueger, Lisa Mangione, Lisa Martino, Ann Marie Mastando, Stephanie Mitchell, Barbara Masi, Cathy Olsen, Ann Marie Petrillo, Michelle Santoriello, and to our Antioch Team. Our youth ministry music ministers Louis and Isabella excelled and were helped by Michael and Gianni. Thanks also to our altar servers, and our Knights of Columbus. Bishop commented on the overwhelming sense of joy in the church and in the excellent interaction our young people had with him. Last Saturday Miss Jen s 2 nd graders received First Holy Communion at 10:00am and Miss Jeanne s at 12:00noon. The celebrations were beautiful and the children were thrilled. Congratulations to our First Holy Communion children we are very proud of them! A big thank you to Bernadette, Gina and their team. Under the direction of Bernadette and Gina our Religious Ed program is active and alive. Thanks to all our catechists, aides and assistants who ensure our children receive the best possible education of faith in an engaging setting. Last Sunday our 1 st graders had a mini retreat. They learned a lot about the sacraments and I had fun having them role model several of the sacraments. As you are aware, I am a chaplain with the Order of Malta. The Order is in existence for more than 1,000 years. The primary role of the Order is to care for the sick and dying, bring Holy Communion to the homebound, visit the prisons, and to be a strong Catholic presence in the world. Last Wednesday evening I flew to Lourdes, France with the Order of Malta. I return to the parish this coming Tuesday afternoon. The Order charted a plane that flew us directly to Lourdes and back. On board there were 448 people comprising of priest chaplains, Knights and Dames, doctors, nurses, aides, and those who we are caring for those in the early stages of cancer, the terminally ill and those with special needs. It s a blessing to be able to assist the sick, the dying and those with special needs and to help them feel the love that comes from our Lady of Lourdes. Please keep us in your prayers. I look forward to telling you about this experience upon my return. Father Owen

Helping Homeless Kids On May 18, I will be sleeping on the streets of Morristown so that homeless kids don t have to. This sleep-out is an act of solidarity with homeless young people to show them that we care. It will also raise funds and awareness for Covenant House, an organization that provides shelter, safety and support to homeless and trafficked youth. The money raised will be put to immediate use to keep doors open and lights on for every young person who seeks help this year. I have set an ambitious fundraising goal of $750 that I cannot reach without your help. EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER Since April 22 nd was Earth Day, all of the classes discussed how to keep our planet healthy and clean! The preschool classes planted different types of flowers and the children are also learning about the life cycle of plants and how plants grow. Each class has their own garden box to plant an item in. The children are going to be excellent gardeners to help them grow! We also discussed many different ways that we can keep our Earth clean; all of us promised to pick up garbage off the ground. Our scholastic magazine taught us about rainy weather, which was perfect for this week's weather. The plants are getting extra water to get nice and big. We also practiced our colors and shapes by coloring in shape kites. The Pre-Kindergarten classes enjoyed recycling items from their room. It is so nice to see them putting their plan into action! In honor of T week, the children also got to wear their Tie Dyed Bandanas that we made as our STEM project in September. All of the classes participated in the St. Jude Trike-A- Thon on Wednesday, April 25 th. This is one of the most exciting days in our school because the children get to ride their bikes in school! Thanks to our generous donations from family and friends, we raised over $4,000 for St. Jude! We are so proud of the children for using the correct safety features while riding their bikes, wearing a helmet, looking where you are going, keeping both hands on the handlebars. We are equally as proud of the parents for showing the children to give to others in need with their donations! If you are interested in signing up for St. Rose of Lima Early Childhood Center, please call to come take a tour of our facility 973-887-1801! We have schedules for all your needs: part-time, full day and extended day!
