Our reactions to the mass shooting in Las Vegas You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill and whoever kills will be liable to judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment,... Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother And then come and offer your gift. Matthew 5:22a,23-24 What were your reactions to the shootings? Did you feel anger, did you feel disgust, did you feel powerless? Did you feel sad, and compassionate for all those affected? Did you feel confused or afraid of what the future brings in our country? I have to say that I felt all of these things. It will take a while to work through all of those feelings. Perhaps its helpful to look to the words of Jesus. The shooter killed and wounded many people in Las Vegas. We can t do anything about that. But did the shooter potentially kill or wound something in us? We as people of faith have control over that. We can say that we will not let our reactions to that violence hurt us or our relationships with each other. That s really what the words of Jesus are all about in the reading above. Evil shows its ugly head in many ways; let us not open our hearts to it. Sincerely, Father Michael OCTOBER 8TH, 2017 Hurricane Relief Collection Thanks I have sent a check to our diocese for $1,997.00 for Hurricane Relief in Florida and Puerto Rico. A NIGHT of JOYFUL NOISE CELEBRATING THE 500TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE REFORMATION WITH THE MILLBURY-SUTTON CLERGY CLUSTER Psalm 100:1,2 encourages us to "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord," and to "Come before His presence with singing." This is what the Millbury/Sutton Clergy Cluster invites us to do on Tuesday evening, October 24th, at 7 PM. We will meet at the Holy Spirit Episcopal Church (formerly St. John's) in Sutton. Rev. Lisa Green will be our hostess. And now for the backstory. Over the summer the clergy gathered to discuss how best to celebrate the 500th Anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, which occurred on October 31, 1517. It was agreed among the Baptists, Congregationalists, Episcopalians and Roman Catholics present that looking to the present and the future is more productive than looking to the past. Great strides have been made over the past 50 years in understanding and affirming one another as Christians first, and members of a particular Christian persuasion second. Wanting to affirm all of this on the local level, the idea of an ecumenical hymn sing emerged. It will be a time to come closer together in the unity of praising God. It will also be a time to witness to this unity to our communities. To witness to the words of that popular hymn, "We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord...and they'll know we are Christians by our love."
