August 23, 2015 Greeting Moses: The Man Behind the Movies Prelude Oh, Worship the King arr. Wold Call to Worship (unison) Though an outcast, though flawed, Moses was God s choice to lead the Israelites to a new life. Though an outcast, though rejected, Jesus was sent by God to bring hope to the marginalized and oppressed, to lead all people to new life. Though imperfect, we are welcomed by God to new life through Jesus Christ. Whatever our failures, whatever our successes, we are welcomed to worship by a God with open arms, by a God of marvelous grace. Processional Hymn 472 Our Worship of God ( Indicates those who are able, please stand.) (Please turn to face the cross as it enters.) 11:15 am Grace Greater Than Our Sin Prayer of Confession (unison) Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear, and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgment. Forgive our misguided attempts to do the right thing but in the wrong way. God of second chances, set us free from a past that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed; and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image; through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Amen. Assurance of Pardon If you repent and believe in God s redeeming mercy, your sins are forgiven. Trust in God s promises and begin anew your life with God and all people in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Passing the Peace of Christ *** As God has given us peace through Christ, so let us pass the peace of Christ to each other.

Anthem We Shall Walk Through the Valley arr. Hogan Prayers of the People and Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Scripture Reading Exodus 2:11-24 Steven Potter One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and saw their forced labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his kinsfolk. He looked this way and that, and seeing no one he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. When he went out the next day, he saw two Hebrews fighting; and he said to the one who was in the wrong, Why do you strike your fellow Hebrew? He answered, Who made you a ruler and judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian? Then Moses was afraid and thought, Surely the thing is known. When Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh. He settled in the land of Midian, and sat down by a well. The priest of Midian had seven daughters. They came to draw water, and filled the troughs to water their father s flock. But some shepherds came and drove them away. Moses got up and came to their defense and watered their flock. When they returned to their father Reuel, he said, How is it that you have come back so soon today? They said, An Egyptian helped us against the shepherds; he even drew water for us and watered the flock. He said to his daughters, Where is he? Why did you leave the man? Invite him to break bread. Moses agreed to stay with the man, and he gave Moses his daughter Zipporah in marriage. She bore a son, and he named him Gershom; for he said, I have been an alien residing in a foreign land. After a long time the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned under their slavery, and cried out. Out of the slavery their cry for Hymn Message help rose up to God. God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Have mercy, God, upon my life, and make me clean within: pour out your ever faithful love and wash away my sin. My guilt is heavy on my mind; I know what I have done: against your justice I have sinned, against you, God, alone. Create in me a faithful heart, and spirit right and new. Sustain me with your saving love and keep me close to you. Then I will praise you with my heart, my mind, my soul, my voice. You save the least and seek the lost; let all the world rejoice!
