I grew up in Natchitoches, Louisiana, attending church with two godly parents. In high school, I took up football, and a couple of years down the line I chose to play for Auburn University. On my way into college, I was attending church, leading Bible study, helping our team, and participating in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. I was aware that I had a special ability from God to do something huge. Then my life took a drastic turn for the worse. I chose to turn away from the awesome teammates, coaches, and the great chaplain that God put at Auburn for me. I was out in the world by myself, doing my own thing, and going places I had no business going. I suppressed the young man my parents raised, and my ability on the field and in the classroom was transforming before everyone s eyes. That snowball effect of rebellion was beginning to catch up with me. I had a good chance to play at the pro level, so I tried out for the NFL, but I didn t make the team. The money I began to make in the working world could not afford the type of lifestyle I wanted, so I packed up and moved away to invest my strength in the drug trade. I consumed myself with darkness, music, movies, TV, drugs and friends. This came with a huge price, including a lot of sleepless nights and many attempts on my life. I couldn t see my way out except through jail or death, and my deliverance began when I was sentenced to five years in federal prison. I came to Alabama to do my time, and with less than two years left, I witnessed the light and love of God that would change the course of history for me! He showed me His honor, charity, integrity, patience, excitement and beautiful grace. I remember I woke up one morning in prison and was so happy; that s where I understood true freedom. I began spending countless hours in the Word and had a passion to pray. The other inmates thought I was going crazy because I was so in love with Jesus. I remember I woke up one morning in prison and was so happy; that s where I understood true freedom. My circumstance and position in the natural was not my freedom, but my God was, which made my circumstances invisible. I kept living a life of love, passion and integrity, but it was getting closer to time to go home. I asked my mom and dad if they would open their home to their prodigal son. I came back to Birmingham with no job, clothes, money, car, friends, mentor, church or pastor. All I had was the promise that God said He would provide. I was still on supervised release, meaning I had to wear an ankle monitor. I couldn t go beyond 15 feet of my home except to work and church once a week, and the church had to be within five miles. My mom and dad live on Grants Mill Road, so I asked my dad about some of the churches nearby, and he told me about Church of the Highlands. I thought to myself, that is where Jesus is, so we are going! We were blown away by the excellence of the church; the love and the people were so free and welcoming. The church also took a huge risk on a former prison inmate by allowing me and my family to host a small group in our home. The church is truly the hope of the world and my story is a testament to that. Now, my mom, dad, and I are all leading a small group, and my wife and I are both pursuing the call of God at Highlands College. I praise God for the servant leadership and the gift of second chances at Church of the Highlands. -Mayo Sowell 10 11

After numerous confirmations, Aaron reached out to Pastor Chris Hodges and the ARC to begin the process of planting a church. Aaron and his family moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, in the fall of 2011, with a desire to lead a life-giving church that pointed people to Jesus. Equipped with tools from the ARC, they began to work on building a launch team. When they moved they only knew a few individuals, but within a month the launch team was fifty people! They scurried to find a meeting space to rent and landed in the heart of the city in a performing arts auditorium at Colorado State University. They had their first service in less than six months and in February, Mill City Church was born. We had 400 people at the first service! I really wasn t too nervous about the first Sunday...it was every week afterward that freaked me out! We slowly grew smaller and in May, the attendance was 160. Aaron said. From the start, Mill City Church embraced and implemented numerous Grow principles and structures. We put things in place at the beginning in preparation for the future. I am convinced that we are living in the middle of a miracle! Jesus is building His church. They were determined to keep things simple and stay steady throughout the summer and by August the attendance had climbed to 250. In the fall they launched small groups and started a second service. From the beginning they committed to doing Mill City Connect (Growth Track) and in September, their attendance was over 800, with 48 small groups and more than 250 people serving on the LIFT Team (Dream Team). One of the things we hear regularly from people is, Since coming to Mill City I have come alive! I am convinced that we are living in the middle of a miracle! Jesus is building His church. Stern said. We are so grateful for all we have learned and our relationship with Pastor Layne Schranz and the Grow Network. Thank you Church of the Highlands! HIGHLANDS COLLEGE At Highlands College, students are able to find their purpose through Christ-centered education, experience their calling through hands-on ministry training, and launch their future through leadership positions around the world. Highlands College provides students with practical leadership training that will prepare them to launch a successful future in a ministry or marketplace position. With two ENROLLED IN 568 THIS IS MY STORY Samuel Robinowich 16 STUDENTS IN FULL TIME INTERNSHIPS 40 My name is Samuel Robinowich and I attended Highlands College. While at Highlands College, I learned more than I ever thought there was to know! When I first got to Highlands College, I was an insecure guy who didn t even know what the word leader meant. I had quit everything I ever started and thought I knew everything. I came to Highlands College knowing that God had called me to be a youth pastor but that was it. While at Highlands College, I realized that I was called to be a lead pastor, and I finally understood that God had made me unique and the calling He placed on my life was bigger than me. I had always program options, students are able to choose what works best for them, whether full time or evening. Then they can choose a ministry concentration where they feel called: ministry leadership, worship, creative arts or marketplace leadership. During their time at Highlands College, students will receive an all-encompassing education through outstanding academics and intentional ministry training. MOTION MOTION CONFERENCE MOTION NIGHTS The MOTION Student Conference is a catalyst weekend for students to be empowered by Jesus to put their faith into MOTION. Strategically scheduled at the end of the summer, it is the perfect opportunity for students to be inspired, encouraged and equipped to start the school year strong for Jesus. Junior high, high school and college age students from every Highlands campus, as well as youth groups from all over the state of Alabama, gather together every second Wednesday of the month at the Grants Mill and Auburn campuses for MOTION Night. MOTION Night is an impactful service designed specifically to connect students who are new to a relationship with Jesus or checking out Highlands for the first time. Our desire is for every student to leave MOTION Night equipped and empowered to walk out their next step in their journey with Christ! It was in the environment of Highlands College that I learned God was allowing me to be His hands and feet. One of the first things I ever heard someone say to me at Highlands College was that I was a leader. This perplexed me because I always thought the leader was the guy up front and I knew I was not going to be up front. Through many questions and a lot of discipling, I found out that God had called me to lead a generation of people to come to know Him. 6,209 STUDENTS REGISTERED 4,495 40% growth since CHURCHES REPRESENTED 121 from 24 different states STUDENTS TRAINED TO LEAD A SMALL GROUP 3,800 YOUTH LEADERS TRAINED 628 AVERAGE ATTENDANCE 2,285 highest recorded attendance in : 3,420 SALVATIONS 300 CHURCHES ACTIVELY BEING COACHED THROUGH THE MOTION NETWORK 77 SERVE TEAM 690 17

HIGHLANDS CHAPEL The Highlands Chapel will be a beautiful, state-of-the-art facility located on the Grants Mill Campus. Created to serve generations of Highlands members, the Chapel will host wedding ceremonies, funeral and memorial services, and Sunday services with traditional style worship. The hope for the Chapel is to take care of the needs of Highlands members while also providing a place for an entirely new group of people who desire a church home with a more traditional Sunday experience. GROWTH AND EXPANSION Since the inception of Church of the Highlands, we have joined together to seek and embrace new opportunities to further reach the people of our cities, state and the world. We ve come together to open empty seats at optimal times in order to create space for those we have not yet reached. We ve accomplished this by expanding our facilities and launching additional campuses across the state. We have seen giving opportunities nationally and internationally and opened our arms to respond with compassion and enthusiasm. We ve done this by accepting the challenge to reach out to prisons, forgotten communities, and unreached nations. In 2 Corinthians 9:11 we are told, You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. By continuing to partner together to invest intentionally we will bring significant change to thousands of people while achieving the highest purpose of bringing glory to God. 20 21

GRANTS MILL CHILDREN S WING As Highlands grows and hundreds of new families join every year, it is a high priority to have facilities that allow our children to be cared for effectively. This addition will provide the space to welcome more children at every service while ensuring safe and quality experiences. It will also include 30 new work spaces on the second floor to accommodate the expanding Highlands staff. LEGACY IMPACT 3,743 Total children served each Sunday at every campus HUNTSVILLE CAMPUS Our church has been blessed with open doors across the state of Alabama to grow and reach new areas. With growing interest for the past few years, a new door has opened in the city of Huntsville, allowing us to further reach our state with the life-giving message of Jesus. A launch team for the Huntsville Campus is being built and a meeting location has been secured at Columbia High School. This location will begin with two Sunday morning services and provide seating for 830 people at each service. GRANTS MILL FOUR LANE PROJECT With a heart to reach the city of Birmingham, a vital part of that vision is creating efficient ingress and egress to our Grants Mill Campus. We are partnering with the city of Irondale and Jefferson County to widen Grants Mill Road and improve the service traffic flow. The road will be changed to four lanes starting near the gas station on Grants Mill Road to just past the main entrance. RIVERCHASE LAND AND PARKING The Riverchase Campus is a growing and thriving home for hundreds of Birmingham families. The additional purchase of land will allow for a parking lot with 200 new spaces. This space will allow room for the current families and continued growth in the years to come. LEGACY IMPACT Reach a city with a population more than 176,645 22 23
