COMMANDER s COLUMN.. Principles Above Personalities...MIKE BRUNNING, Commander Comrades Just in case you were not informed of my current situation, I will be recovering from surgery. It will have started on the 2nd of August. Then I will be in the hospital for 2-4 days then I will be in recovery for a couple of months. I will try and make all meetings but will need the other Officers to cover down in my absence.. There are a things I need to stress concern. The first is participation. We have Members that like to create events to help this Post stay above our expenses. Those Members also work those events but a lot of times they cant do all the work. There for participation is needed from other Post Members and Auxiliary members. The calendar of events are included. Plan accordingly. Second is Communication! The communication between Post Members, Auxiliary and the community are very important to the success of this Post. Just a reminder we have offered our post to host the District 2 School of Instruction scheduled for 26th of August. I hope you all can make it. This is our Post lets show our support. We still do PTSD classes every Tuesday for anybody who is interested. Get with Norm Holle or Mike Martin to show you the way to achieve 100% Disability. Just a reminder, the Planning Committee Meeting will NOW be scheduled for the second Thursdays at 18:00 with the Post Meeting to follow at 19:00....Commander MICHAEL Before you complain, have YOU volunteered yet???? VFW AUXILIARY....TANYA BRUNNING, President Greetings Auxiliary Members, The summer has been quiet at the Post. Before you know it the autumn will be here with lots of activities. On Sept 23, we will have a float with the Post in the Overland Park parade. If you have an idea for the float, come to the meeting and share your ideas. Mark your calendar for November 4, the Mouse Races will be here! We will need help with food and running the betting windows. Sponsorship forms will be available soon. I know I said this last month, but it bears repeating. If you haven t been to a meeting in a while, please join us. We need everyone s involvement to succeed. Reminder the meeting night is the 2nd Thursday of every Month. Looking forward to a productive year!...tanya BRUNNING, President Volunteers Do Not necessarily have the time; they have the heart. Elizabeth Andrew POW/MIA REPORT RAY CALORE, Chairman In last month s Newsletter I reported on the unresolved POW/MIA case of BARON 52, the EC-47Q intelligence aircraft shot down over Laos on 5 Feb 1973, a week after the Vietnam Peace Accords were signed. There were eight crewmen on board; Four of them Sgt Cressman, Matejov, Melton and Brandenburg were determined to be missing. The secret intelligence information they would ve had made them prime targets for capture by the enemy. From that point, the struggle was on between the families of those men and the US bureaucracy that attempts to misrepresent the truth in the POW/MIA issue. Fast forward to February 1991. Col. Millard Mike Peck, then Chief of DIA s Special Office on POWs, caused an uproar by resigning his position, leaving a 5-page resignation letter tacked to his office door. Amid his charges and allegations was the statement that the farce that is being played is no more than political legerdemain done with "smoke and mirrors", to stall the issue until it dies a natural death. This brings us to the sad death a few days ago (Aug. 2) of Steve Cressman, brother of Sgt. Peter Cressman from Baron 52. Steve had been a leader in the fight to obtain information and truth about our POWs, including his brother Peter. One more leader in the search for answers is gone, just as predicted by Col. Peck. One by one, the wives, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, sons, daughters are passing away, leaving who? to continue the struggle. Were they the only people who cared? We of the VFW and veterans organizations have an obligation to carry on that mission for the missing men, for their families, and for the good of the service. Don t let the opportunity die a natural death. Next month we will observe National POW/MIA Recognition Day (Recognition WEEK here in Kansas). Please try to attend the Overland Park City Hall ceremony on Sep. 10. Look for details in next month s newsletter, or call the Post. It s one more thing we can do for our highest national priority. HOSPITAL REPORT Chris Anderson, Sheryl Gulley, Mary Secrest and Jim Robinson again made the small trip to the Leavenworth VA Hospital on July 27. We had 45 Vets in attendance and all of us had a great time. The Vets were served cookies and milk which went over really well. We brought up a bag of small toiletries which again were well received. Sheryl Gulley donated 9 pairs of blue jeans and all of them were taken within minutes. So if any of you have any extra toiletries, shampoo, toothpaste, conditioner, etc., and men's or women's jeans in good condition and clean, please bring them to the Post so we can bring them to the VA. Our next visit will be on Aug. 24. This time we will be serving watermelon so we will have to leave earlier than normal, at 5:00. If any of you would like to donate 4 hours of your time for a worthy cause, this is it. All of our work is deeply appreciated and it's wonderful to see everyone enjoying themselves so much. Stay cool! Chris Anderson and Dana Pflumm ANSWER to LAST MONTH S TRIVIA The nickname of the World War II B-17 long-range bomber was the Flying Fortress.
