St. Andrew Presbyterian Church Denton, Texas Second Sunday after Pentecost June 3, 2018, 10:30 a.m. Hearing devices and large print Bibles and hymnals are available. Ask an usher. Gathering around God s Word Prelude Berceuse Louis Vierne Welcome and Announcements Please sign the Ritual of Friendship pad in the pews. Ringing of the Bell Call to Worship Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out; you formed me in my mother s womb. I thank you, High God you re breathtaking! You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into something. Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth; all the stages of my life were spread out before you, The days of my life all prepared before I d even lived one day. Opening Prayer *Hymn 664 Morning Has Broken bunessan Prayer of Confession (unison) We confess, O God, to failing to hear your call for our lives because the demands of the world drown out your voice, and we choose not to work at listening for your call. We confess, O God, to failing to heed your call when we do hear it. We prefer the challenges of our own choosing, particularly those with many rewards and few demands. Forgive us, we pray, our unwillingness to give ourselves over to you, who has given Christ for us, and show us how to follow him into the world. In his name, we pray. (Time of silent confession). Sung Response You Are the Lord, Giver of Mercy Hymn 437 You are the Lord, giver of mercy! You are the Christ, giver of mercy! You are the Lord, giver of mercy! Declaration of Pardon Friends, believe the good news of the gospel. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God! Call to Faithfulness (Adapted from Acts 2: 36-39) Know this: There s no longer room for doubt God made Jesus Master and Messiah. Change your life. Turn to God, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, so your sins are forgiven. Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know

the message God sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ he is Lord of all. *Sung Response Glory to God, Whose Goodness Shines on Me Hymn 582 Prayer for Illumination Proclaiming God s Word David Strutton First Scripture Reading Mark 2: 23-38 New Testament, page 34 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! Anthem Psalm 139 (from Pilgrimage) Carlisle Floyd Jeffrey Snider, baritone Time with Young Disciples Children ages three years through kindergarten are invited to go to the Children s Chapel at this time. Older children are invited to remain in the sanctuary with their parents. Second Scripture Reading I Samuel 3: 1-20 Old Testament, page 236 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! Sermon Sammy, Sam, Samuel Richard B. Culp Responding to God s Word *Hymn 720 Jesus Calls Us galilee *Apostles Creed (ecumenical version) (unison) I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayers of the People and The Lord s Prayer (unison) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Presentation of Tithes & Offerings Offertory Our Father, Who Art in Heaven J.S. Bach *Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below; Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*Prayer of Dedication The Sealing of God s Word *Hymn 501 Feed Us, Lord feed us The Sacrament of Holy Communion Invitation to the Lord s Table The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.... evermore praising you and singing: Hymn 552 Holy, Holy, Holy, v. 1 Land of Rest... therefore we proclaim the mystery of our faith: Hymn 553 Christ Has Died; Christ Is Risen Land of Rest Breaking of the Bread and Lifting of the Cup The gifts of God for the people of God. Let us keep the feast! Thanksgiving after Communion Taking God s Word into the World *Hymn 526 Let Us Talents and Tongues Employ linstead *Benediction *Postlude Improvisation on Psalm 39 (Hymn 28) When communion is served in the pews: White wine is offered in the center ring of each tray and red grape juice is in the outer rings. Welcome! We proclaim that ALL people are created in the image of God and affirm that each person is a beloved child of God, worthy of God s love and grace. We welcome all, celebrating our differences while finding unity in Christ. No matter who you are or where you are on life s journey, you are welcome here. Join us in the Narthex following worship so that we can get acquainted. The session, our governing body, will be in the parlor immediately following the 10:30am worship service to receive new members. Children s Chapel During the worship service, children ages three years through kindergarten go to chapel immediately following the Children s Sermon. Circle of the Holy Eucharist Sara Armstrong Godly Play seeks to tell the stories of the faith so that children hear and remember these stories and become engaged in them. It also provides a place and opportunities for children to begin exploring the purpose and meaning of worship. Parents may come upstairs to the Children s Chapel to pick children up following the worship service.
