TWENTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, SEPTEMBER 7, 2014 The school and parish will share the carnival s profits, with 80% going to the school. I hope you will enthusiastically support the carnival. Great credit is due to Mary Lu Vincent, who has worked heroically on every aspect of the carnival for months now, and to the volunteers she has recruited. Although we will lose a number of parking spaces next Saturday and Sunday, don t forget that the parking lots in front of the lower school building and next to its right side are available to you. FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Today is the 93rd anniversary of the founding of the Legion of Mary. Our own parish s praesidium, or local chapter, of the Legion has been meeting for over 25 years. The 12:00 Mass will have a special commemoration of this milestone. A lunch will follow. The Legion of Mary was started in Ireland by a remarkable layman named Frank Duff (1889-1980), a Servant of God (that is, a nominee for canonization who has reached the first of the three levels needed to qualify for sainthood). A man of remarkable faith and energy, he kept active into the very Friday on which he died at age 91. Three days before, he took part in an interfaith meeting, and on the morning of his death he attended two Masses. He planned to enjoy one of his favorite recreations that weekend by bicycling around Dublin Bay, but God called him to his permanent home instead. Frank Duff, son of a middle-class family, entered government service after graduating from high school, and worked on 1921 s change from British to Irish rule. He was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, which relieved the needs of the poor, and used a number of its organizational principles in establishing the Legion s format, among them, the holding of weekly meetings that featured prayer and specific reports on members apostolic work. The Legion s Handbook, almost all of it Duff s work, drew deeply from the wells of the Church s tradition, especially from St. Louis de Monfort s classic of Marian spirituality True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Frank Duff was also a modern pioneer of the rediscovery of the Church as the Mystical Body of Christ, a truth very prominent in St. Paul s New Testament writings, as well as the notions of Our Lady s wonderful privilege of being the Mediatrix of Graces and of the Holy Spirit s key role in the Church s life. Legion of Mary members are called to be active in significant apostolates, and have committed themselves to be at the Church s service since the organization s earliest days, when they worked to rescue prostitutes and care for unwed mothers and homeless men in Dublin. Since then, the Legion has expanded into 1,300 dioceses and now claims over a million members, who do uncountable good works. Pat Fakharzadeh, leader of our praesidium, would be happy to talk to you if you have questions about the Legion of Mary or if you would like to join it. The carnival marking the 75th anniversary of Saint Joseph School runs from next Friday through Sunday. Besides being an enjoyment for all who attend, it is also a significant cooperative venture between our parish and school, something very important to our future as our Catholic schools become Archdiocesan entities but still ones with crucial ties to parishes. (continued above) Msgr. David Hubba LEGION OF MARY ANNIVERSARY More than twenty-five years ago, the Legion of Mary began meeting at Saint Joseph Parish. On November 23, 1987, a group of twelve gathered together for the first time. Under the guidance of their spiritual director, Father James McKenna, they began with prayers and in a format that would be recognized by legionaries around the Current president Pat world who have followed this Fakharzadeh (right) with method for over ninety years. original member Sue McGough. The very first meeting of the worldwide Legion of Mary took place in Dublin, Ireland, on September 7, 1921 exactly 93 years ago today. The Founder of the Legion, Servant of God Frank Duff was inspired by True Devotion to Mary as taught by St. Louis Marie de Montfort. The Legion aims to bring Mary to the world as a means of winning the world to Jesus. The object of the Legion of Mary is the glory of God through the holiness of its members developed by prayer and active co-operation in Mary s and the Church s work. The unit of the Legion of Mary is called a praesidium, which holds a weekly meeting, where prayer is intermingled with reports and discussion. The members participate in the life of the parish through visitation of families, the sick, both in their homes and in hospitals and through collaboration in every apostolic and missionary undertaking sponsored by the parish. Our local group, the Immaculate Conception praesidium, will celebrate the Legion s anniversary at the 12:00 noon mass this Sunday, September 7. by Pat Fakharzadeh (See more about our Legion of Mary on the next page.) 3

TWENTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, SEPTEMBER 7, 2014 SAINT JOSEPH EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT HONORS THE BLESSED MOTHER Eagle Scout candidate Michael Criscuolo, a member of Saint Joseph Boy Scout Troop 142, wanted to do something to give back to his parish. A 2011 graduate of Saint Joseph School, Michael received the sacraments of First Penance, First Eucharist and Confirmation at Saint Joseph Church. When Michael, now a senior at Bergen Catholic High School, reached out to Parish Facilities Director Tom Meli to offer his services, they came up with the idea to transform a little area next to the rectory that had a statue of the Blessed Mother almost hidden in overgrown bushes into a beautiful place of prayer and contemplation. CATECHISTS NEEDED! Volunteer Catechists for the following grades are urgently needed: Sundays: Kindergarten (2 catechists needed); Second Grade (1); Sixth Grade (1); Tuesdays: Kindergarten (1); First Grade (1); Second Grade (2); Third Grade (1); Sixth Grade (1); Office Helpers are also needed for Tuesdays. Please prayerfully consider sharing your time and talent in our parish Religious Education Program. Training will be provided. If you can help to share our Faith with the children of our parish, please call Deacon George Montalvo at 201-261-1144. With assistance from his father, Michael, Sr., his grandfather Tony Criscuolo, his brother Joseph (a 2014 SJS graduate) and members of his troop and former SJS classmates, Michael cleared the area, built an elegant raised circular platform made of stone, constructed sturdy benches and a shadow box to protect the statue from the elements and planted rosebushes. It is fitting that this lovely little Marian Shrine was completed just in time for the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Mother on September 8. Thank you, Michael, for all your hard work! CATHOLIC RADIO NOW ON AIR IN NJ Relevant Radio, the nation's largest Catholic Radio network, has now brought Catholic broadcasting to the metro area on WNSW 1430 AM. WNSW brings coverage of Catholic news, opinions, catechesis and information 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week. Many of its signature shows are call-in programs that bring to listeners a clear and consistent Catholic message to benefit not only Catholic people, but people of all faiths, helping them to understand the Catholic faith more fully and share it with others. The Archdiocese of Newark has been instrumental in bringing this new source of Catholic information to the area, and we invite everyone to tune in to WNSW-AM 1430 every day for informative and entertaining Catholic viewpoints on today's issues of importance, and clear understanding of Catholic teaching and tradition. NEW HOPE PREGNANCY RESOURCE CENTER VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Our new Center has blossomed!
