MATTHEW 5:3 Poor in spirit is confusing for many of us. It simply means to place your trust in God, putting His will first and being strong in faith. As we celebrate the lives of the saints on All Saints Day, remember, we too are called to be saints. Dialing down our own pride and ego and turning up the humility will help us on our path to sainthood. ALL SAINTS ~ NOVEMBER 1, 2015 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Because November 1 falls on a Sunday this year, the feast of All Saints replaces the Mass for the 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time. This joyous day does not just honor the 7,000 or so canonized saints, some of whom have their own liturgical day in the Church s calendar of worship or the great majority who do not. (One of my favorites in the latter category is St. John the CamelDriving Bishop, an 8th century Syriac who was captured by Bedouins and made a slave in charge of camels. After his identity was discovered when he was overheard singing religious chants, John refused to be ransomed, and died soon after.) The feast day also honors all who have gained their eternal salvation, including members of our own families and our friends. What is a good description of a saint? I like one that came from the pen of one of the Fathers of the Church who should enjoy greater prominence than he has been given: St. Cyril of Alexandria, who wrote that sense of humility, we may be disinclined to think of ourselves as such. But, if so, we should really think again. For a good many years I had the privilege and enjoyment of teaching courses to religious sisters who were in the early stages of their formation. The classes were held at the headquarters of the Parish Visitors of Mary Immaculate in Monroe, NY, whose general superior, Sister Carole Marie Troskowski, once recalled advice a priest had given her, which should set Catholics thinking differently if they do not see themselves as prospective saints: I remember a very gifted spiritual director who pointed my attention away from myself to the power of God, saying, If you want it, God has the power to make you a saint, even a great saint. If you object and say that you are not smart enough, gifted enough, etc., then you are denying that God is all-powerful. He does not need any of these conditions to make a person holy only their trust and cooperation. On those who have been made partakers of His divine nature through participation in the Holy Spirit, there is somehow stamped the suprasensuous likeness to Christ, and the beauty of the inexpressible divinity gleams in the souls of the saints. God wants you and me to be honored on the feast day of All Saints some day. This possibility is very appealing. And the only alternative to it is, to say the least, enormously undesirable. Msgr. David Hubba When we look at ourselves, do we see saint material? Can we envision ourselves as possible saints? Out of a (Painting above is from an altarpiece by Fra Angelico.) NEW HOPE FOR CHILDREN BREAKFAST SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8 ATTENTION ALL LECTORS! SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ CONSECRATION TO JESUS THROUGH MARY BEGINS NOVEMBER 5 EUCHARISTIC ADORATION NOVEMBER 4 The Legion of Mary here at Saint Joseph Parish is called the Immaculate Conception Praesidium. Every year we renew our consecration to Jesus through Mary on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception which is on December 8. We would like to invite all parishioners to consecrate themselves to Jesus through Mary. Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary is an absolutely beautiful exercise to increase your spirituality and ability to truly serve our Lord Jesus Christ. There is a 33-day preparation which will start on November 5. Anyone interested in finding out more about consecration should email LOM@sjcnj.org or call 201-615-0585. As Catholics, we firmly believe that God has a plan for our lives! He calls some to marriage, some to the priesthood, and others to religious life or to live as generous single people. Fully living our own vocations and teaching young people how to discern God s call is a serious duty, but also a joyful one. Today begins National Vocation Awareness Week, which was instituted by the U.S. Bishops in 1976, and is now celebrated the first week of November. This year, the beginning of the week falls on All Saints Day a happy coincidence, because a vocation, in its fullest sense, is our path to heaven and sainthood. During this week, please pray about how God is calling you to live your vocation more deeply. Encourage the young people in your life children, grand -children, students, and friends to be open if God calls them to priesthood or religious life. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will be held on Wednesday, November 4 in Mary s Chapel (in the lower church) from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Legion of Mary invites you to attend. See our bulletin in FULL COLOR on our website: sjcnj.org FIRST FRIDAY DEVOTION HOLY HOUR NOVEMBER 6 Join us for the First Friday holy hour devotion to the Sacred Heart on Friday, November 6 immediately after the Mass in Mary s Chapel. NATIONAL VOCATIONS AWARENESS WEEK NOVEMBER 1-7 Listen and be brave! Have you sometimes heard the voice of the Lord through a desire, restlessness, inviting you to follow him more closely? Have you had any desire to be apostles of Jesus? Ask Jesus what he wants from you and be brave! Pope Francis (Cut out the holy card below, fold in half and glue sides together.) 4

How often have you said, One of these days I will go to the Holy Land, where Jesus and Mary walked and lived? Now it is my joy to invite you to this great retreat-pilgrimage to the Holy Land in the footsteps of Jesus and Mary. As you read these words of invitation, God is inviting you to have a personal encounter with him and the Blessed Mother, Mary in the cities and holy sites we are about to visit that we may learn, pray and grow in faith and holiness. We will eat well, stay in good hotels, travel in an air-conditioned bus and of course, shopping is part of it. If you feel exhausted, you may just stay in the bus and wait for the group to come back. Our retreat-pilgrimage will also give us time for personal reflections, daily masses, confession, spiritual direction, especially reflections upon the Biblical texts appropriate to each place we visit, but also times of rest and private moments. I recently had the opportunity to speak to members of a group of more than 150 pilgrims who just returned from the Holy Land and both they and local authorities have assured me that Israel is safe for group tours/ pilgrimages. This retreat-pilgrimage only costs $2,898 per person/ double occupancy. A deposit of $350 per person is required to reserve seats with Regina Tours (212) 5948787, ext. 250.
