The 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima Part XXIV JULY 13, 1917 continued Comment on the vision of Hell from last week s column: First the vision: We must not think that hell is literally in the earth or even necessarily a sea of fire. The children are seeing a spiritual reality manifested in a way that they can comprehend according to the natural mode of the senses. We don t think the Holy Spirit is a tongue of fire or a dove, yet that is how He manifested Himself according to Sacred Scripture. However, these images portray a truth about the nature of the Holy Spirit. The pain of hell is like being burned alive by fire without ever dying. Horrible thought, but the reality is worse than the image. Our Lord Himself uses the image of fire for hell. It is this image that best portrays the reality of hell. Other saints have had visions in which fire is not mentioned; it is not the only torment of hell. St. Faustina gives a more fuller account of the sufferings of hell in her diary. Again, demons are not frightful and unknown animals, but appear as such to portray the reality of their horrible state. You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them (sinners), God wishes to establish in the world devotion to my Immaculate Heart. If what I say to you is done, many souls will be saved and there will be peace. The war is going to end; but if people do not cease offending God, a worse one will break out during the pontificate of Pius XI. When you see a night illumined by an unknown light, know that this is the great sign given you by God that He is about to punish the world for its crimes, by means of war, famine, and persecutions of the Church and of the Holy Father. To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of Reparation on the First Saturdays. If my requests are heeded, Russia will be converted, and there will be peace; if not, she will spread her errors throughout the world, causing wars and persecutions of the Church. The good will be martyred, the Holy Father will have much to suffer, various nations will be annihilated. In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me, and she will be converted, and a period of peace will be granted to the world. In Portugal, the dogma of Faith will always be preserved. Comment: Hell is real and there is a real possibility that any one of us could end up there. This is a stern warning of tough love. Once in hell, there is no hope of salvation. It is eternal. When our Lady says to save them she is talking about sinners, not those already in hell. Again, this devotion is a means by which Jesus Christ wishes to grant the grace He has won for us on the Cross to secure the salvation He has won for us. This vision was kept a secret for some time. The June apparition about the Immaculate Heart Devotion was considered the first secret. The vision of hell was the second secret, and the next vision was considered the third secret of Fatima. The third secret was not revealed until the year 2000. Our Lady makes a prediction: if her message is heeded peace will be granted to the world. If not, if people do not cease offending God, a worse war will break out during the pontificate of Pius XI. Pope Pius Benedict XV was pope at the time. Pius XI was pope from 1922 1939. Most historians account the beginning of WWII with Germany s invasion of Poland during the Pontificate of Pope Pius XII. When asked about this Lucia said that in God s eyes the war began when Germany annexed Austria. An unknown light appeared in the Sky over Europe on January 25 th, 1938. Most scientist say this was an aurora borealis, albeit it appeared too far south for a normal borealis. Some get hung up over the unknown since an aurora borealis is a very well known light. However, there is no reason to assume that when our Lady refers to an unknown light she is speaking of everyone. She may have been referring to Lucia and the many people of Europe who, never having seen an aurora borealis and never expecting to see one in the far Southern reaches of Europe, did not know what the light was. However, Lucia did state that if scientists looked at the facts more closely, they will find that it was not an aurora borealis. Scientists decided to call it an aurora borealis because they had no other explanation for it and it was more like an aurora borealis than anything else. Her explanation is not part of the message of Fatima and has no guarantee of being correct. It may truly have been an aurora borealis, but honestly, who cares? In 1939 a strange light appears in the night sky over Europe, reaching further South than an aurora borealis usually ever reaches; it is during the Pontificate of Pius XI, and soon after the worse war of human history breaks out: WWII. I think we can accept this as the sign predicted by our Lady. In Jesus and Mary,
