Descendants of Thomas Bryan Generation No. 1 1. THOMAS 1 BRYAN was born Bef. 1719, and died 1767 in Bladen County, NC. Notes for THOMAS BRYAN: Thomas Bryan patented 200 acres of land in Bladen County in 1739. He must therefore have been born prior to 1719. His origin is presently unknown. He left a will in Bladen County dated 25 February, 1766. It was probated on 5 May, 1767. Unfortunately, the will does not give the name of his wife, but it does mention his children. Edward Bryan executed the will and Jacob Muntz was a witness. Children of THOMAS BRYAN are: 2. i. EDWARD 2 BRYAN, d. Bet. 1784-1788, Bladen County, NC. ii. STEPHEN BRYAN. iii. WILLIAM BRYAN. 3. iv. PHILEMON BRYAN. v. JOHN BRYAN. vi. THOMAS BRYAN. Notes for THOMAS BRYAN: The will of Thomas Bryan was probated in 1786 in Bladen County. 4. vii. SARAH BRYAN. 5. viii. AMY BRYAN. ix. ELIZABETH O. Generation No. 3 6. ANN 3 BRYAN (EDWARD 2, THOMAS 1 ) was born Bet. 1765-1774 in Bladen County, NC, and died Bef. 03 August 1824 in Bladen County, NC. She married STREET ASHFORD. He was born Bet. 1765-1767, and died Aft. 03 January 1816 in Bladen County, NC. Notes for STREET ASHFORD: Notes extracted from report by Russell Eugene Allen. Copyright RE Allen: Street Ashford probably appeared in Bladen County, North Carolina between 1784 and 1788. He is not listed in the 1784 tax list for Bladen County but is listed in 1788 with 550 acres of land, 1 free poll, and 2 free black polls. He married Ann Byan, daughter of Edward and Anna Bryan. Much of their land appears to have been Edward Bryan land. Edward Bryan was the son of Thomas Byran of Bladen County. Further research will hopefully place Street Ashford's origin. A 1956 book by Charlie Rabb Ashford, Sr. may supply clues to the mystery of Street Ashford's early life. Michael Ashford lived with wife Ann in Prince William County, Virginia in the early 1700's. Michael and Ann each filed a will there in 1734. John, their oldest son, married Elizabeth Stonestreet, daughter of Thomas Stonestreet. John and Elizabeth lived in Fairfax County, Virginia. Butler Stonestreet Ashford, the son of John and Elizabeth Ashford, and wife Susannah sold land that he had inherited from his parents in 1775 to John Bates. Their son, John Stonestreet Ashford, married Ann Jewell and settled first in New Hanover County, North Carolina and later in Sampson County. He was located in these counties at the same time that Street lived in Bladen County. Ironically, on of John Stonestreet Ashford's sons was also named Street Ashford. Was Street Ashford of Bladen County the son of Butler Stonestreet Ashford? Street Ashford is listed in the U.S. Census of 1790 in Bladen County. He is listed as head of a family that included 3 free white males 16 years old and upward, 2 free white males under 16 years of age, 1 free white female, and 6 slaves. In 1800, Ashford is listed as captain of a census district in Bladen County. Captain Street Ashford is listed with 1 free white male 26-45, 2 free white females under 10, 1 free white female 26-45, and 6 slaves. In 1810, the Ashford family is again listed in Bladen County with 1 free white male 16-26, 1 free white male 26-45, 1 free white female 16-26, 1 free white female 26-45, and 7 slaves. According to a newspaper account in The Wilmington Gazette, Street Ashford was elected from Bladen County to the North Carolina House of Commons in 1800. According to information in the NC Archives, he served from 1800 through 1803. Street Ashford made his will on 3 January, 1816. In addition to his wife Ann, he named his two daughters Ann Ashford McGill and Lenora Ashford King. Added by Jason Bordeaux: Taking into account the 1800 age of Street Ashford as 26-45 and the 1810 age of 26-45, we have birth date ranges of 1755-1774 and 1765-1784. These two ranges can cancel upper and lower limits when combined, and a new range of 1765-1774 can be obtained. However, taking into account that Street Ashford must have been at least 21 years of age to have been listed on the 1788 tax list, he must have been born prior to 1767. We can therefore pin a 3 17 December 2005 9:03 PM

birthdate of 1765-1767. Children of ANN BRYAN and STREET ASHFORD are: 11. i. LENORA 4 ASHFORD, b. Abt. 1791, Bladen County, NC; d. Aft. 1860, Bladen County, NC. 12. ii. ELIZABETH ANN ASHFORD, b. She was born Abt. 1760, and died 24 June 1839. Child of WILLIAM BRYAN and SARAH SINGLETARY is: 13. i. NATHAN 4 BRYAN, b. 23 January 1801. 8. ANN 3 SIMPSON (SARAH 2 BRYAN, THOMAS 1 ) She married? SARAH 3 SIMPSON (SARAH 2 BRYAN, THOMAS 1 ) was born 31 August 1769, and died 18 November 1839. She married RICHARD MULLINGTON LEWIS, son of JOSIAH LEWIS and ANN MULLINGTON. He was born 20 February 1763, and died 29 February 1844. Children of SARAH SIMPSON and RICHARD LEWIS are: i. EDWARD 4 LEWIS, b. 06 August 1802. ii. RICHARD MULLINGTON LEWIS, JR., b. 06 February 1797. 10. WILLIAM 3 BALDWIN (AMY 2 BRYAN, THOMAS 1 ) was born Abt. 1745 in NC, and died Abt. 1801 in Bladen County, NC. He married PENELOPE FAULK, daughter of JOHN FAULK. Children of WILLIAM BALDWIN and PENELOPE FAULK are: i. ELIZABETH 4 BALDWIN. HESTER BALDWIN. PENELOPE BALDWIN. ii. iii. iv. DAVID BALDWIN, b. 15. vi. WILLIAM BALDWIN, b. 1796; d. Aft. 1880. Generation No. 4 11. LENORA 4 ASHFORD (ANN 3 BRYAN, EDWARD 2, THOMAS 1 ) was born Abt. 1791 in Bladen County, NC, and died Aft. 1860 in Bladen County, NC. She married (1) GEORGE KING. He was born Bef. 1790 in North Carolina, and died Bet. 03 January 1816-03 April 1823 in unknown. She married (2) AQUILLA NORMAN Aft. 03 April 1823 in Bladen County, NC. He was born in Tyrell County, NC. Notes for LENORA ASHFORD: Lenora King first appears in the deed records of Bladen County on 3 April, 1823. She is acting independently in a deed with John McGill and his wife Elizabeth Ann Ashford, sister to Lenora. Therefore, George King must have died prior to this. Lenora married Aquilla Norman later that year. Aquilla appears to have been a young man of about 20 years while Lenora was about 32. A year later in December of 1824, Aquilla and Lenora Norman signed a separation agreement in the presence of Jeremiah Norman. The agreement stated that unhappy differences existed between the two and they wished to live apart. Lenora and Aquilla Norman eventually disposed of all land inherited from the Street Ashford estate, including the 300 acres left to the children of George King. Lenora moved in with Joseph Allen, a son-inlaw, probably before 1830. Aquilla sold his last bit of land, including his home, in 1828 to Jeremiah Norman, and he apparently left Bladen County. Notes for GEORGE KING: The origin of George King remains unknown. Only one record of him has been found. He is mentioned in the will of his father-in-law, Street Ashford of Bladen County, NC, on January 3, 1816. The wording of the will implies that Street Ashford s daughter, Lenora Ashford King, and her husband, George King, were not living in the immediate area. According to George's youngest son, Street Ashford King, George was living somewhere in Georgia in 1816. Street Ashford King gives his state of birth as Georgia on the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 Bladen County, NC census. The 1880 census does indicate that Street Ashford King s father was born in NC. Based on this record, we can assume that George King was originally from NC. It should be noted that George King's other Bladen County children give their place of birth as NC. Anna D. King Allen, who was born in 1809, gives her birthplace as NC. George Washington King, who was born in 1815, gives his birthplace as NC. Street Ashford King was born in 1816 and he gives his birthplace as Georgia. Did the family move to Georgia? If so, why do they all end up back in Bladen County, NC by 1823? Did an early death for George King prompt Lenora Ashford King to bring her family home to live on the Street Ashford plantation in Bladen County, NC? Or, were George King and his family visiting relatives in Georgia in 1816 when Lenora Ashford King gave birth? Based on these questions, it is very interesting that John King and Jane Morehead King had left Bladen County, NC and moved to Camden County, Georgia in the 1780s. John King's original land holdings in Bladen County, NC were very near those of Street Ashford. 5 17 December 2005 9:03 PM

The 1810 Georgia state census does not exist. The 1820 Georgia state census lists 3 George Kings. There is a George King in Putnam County, a George W. King in Jackson County, and a George W. King in Baldwin County. None of these enumerations match our George King. There are no records of children younger than Street Ashford King (born August 10, 1816). George King was living on January 3, 1816 when Street Ashford of Bladen County, NC wrote his will. We must therefore assume that George King died sometime after January 3, 1816. Lenora Ashford King first appears in the deed records of Bladen County on April 3, 1823. She is acting independently in a deed with her brother-in-law, John McGill, and his wife Ann Ashford McGill. Based on Lenora Ashford King's deed records, we know that George King had died before April 3, 1823. According to deed records, Lenora Ashford King had married Aquilla Norman sometime in 1823. In December of 1824, Aquilla and Lenora Ashford King Norman signed a separation agreement in the presence of Jeremiah Norman. The agreement stated that unhappy differences existed between the two and they wished to live separate and apart. Aquilla Norman and Lenora Ashford King Norman eventually disposed of all land inherited from the Street Ashford estate. Several slaves were sold to John Owen and James Iver McKay. James Iver McKay purchased Lenora Ashford King Norman's 200 acre portion of the Ashford plantation in 1826 (including the homestead) for $1000. Prior to Street Ashford, the land is described as formerly belonging to Edward Bryan. In his 1816 will, Street Ashford left 300 acres on White's Creek to the children of George and Lenora Ashford King. Street Ashford had purchased 100 acres of land on Horsepen Branch in 1804. This 100 acres was probably part of that lot. I find no other mention of this land in later records. What happened to it? This land would be located between present day Elizabethtown and Clarkton. Lenora Ashford King Norman moved in with her daughter Anna D. King Allen and son-in-law Joseph Allen probably about 1830. Aquilla Norman sold his last bit of land, including his home, in 1828 to Jeremiah Norman, and he stated that he was leaving Bladen County, NC. I have found no record of where he went. According to Dollie Ellison Andrews, her ancestor Willis Ellison was born a slave on the George King plantation in Bladen County on March 14, 1834. She says the location of this plantation was in the Village of Zara. I have been unable to identify this location. Did James Iver McKay give the Street Ashford plantation George King s name? Was this plantation located at the original Street Ashford homesite? Or, was it located on the 300 acres on White s Creek that had been left to the children of George and Lenora Ashford King by Street Ashford? More research is needed. 6 17 December 2005 9:03 PM

Willis Ellison who was born on the George King plantation in 1834 married Dollie King. I found her death certificate in the Bladen County courthouse and it gives her parents as Benjamin and Elsie King. None of the children of George and Lenora Ashford King are established with proof. The connections are based on locations, names, and timeframes. The maiden name of King for Anna D. King Allen is proven on the death certificates of 2 of her children. Lenora Ashford King Norman is living with Anna D. King Allen and Joseph Allen on the 1850 and 1860 Bladen County, NC census. Anna is without a doubt a daughter of George King and Lenora Ashford King. Anna D. King Allen and Joseph Allen lived near Bryan's Mill Pond. There appears to be an unknown son of George and Lenora Ashford King that has not been identified. George G. King, age 8, and Catherine King, age 5, are living with Anna D. King Allen and Lenora Ashford King Norman in the 1850 Bladen County, NC census. I have considered the possibility that they could be children of George Washington King or Street Ashford King. However, the dates simply do not allow George G. King and Catherine King to fit into these families. Is David King the unidentified son of George and Lenora Ashford King? David King of Bladen County, NC is recorded as marrying Ann A. Bryan in Wilmington on May 1, 1845. A child, Mary Leonora King, was born in 1846. Mary Leonora King and her mother Ann A. Bryan King died on the same day on February 29, 1848. Ann A. Bryan would have been a second wife for David King if he was the father of George G. King and Catherine King. George G. King gives support to this theory by stating on his Civil War record that he was born in Brunswick County, NC. Neither George G. King or Catherine King lived until 1913 and therefore a death certificate does not exist that could possibly identify their parents. George Washington King is identified in 2 deed records only as Washington King. His first name of George is known from family history. George Washington King purchased his land from his father-in-law, James Munce, and his brother-in-law, John Munce. This land was located on present day Reedy Meadow Road in Bethel Township, Bladen County, NC. Based on his age, the names of his children and his location, it is assumed that he was a son of George and Lenora Ashford King. Street Ashford King was obviously named for his grandfather Street Ashford. The children of Jeremiah Norman transferred a share of their inherited land to Street Ashford King. Street Ashford King had various other land holdings as well including a lot in Elizabethtown identified as the Ashford lot next to the Presbyterian Church. His 53 acre homestead was located in Dublin and is described as being bounded by the old Dublin Post Office, the Lumberton Road, and the Singletary Church lot. Children of LENORA ASHFORD and GEORGE KING are: 16. i. ANNA D. 5 KING, b. Abt. 1809, unknown; d. Aft. 1870, Bladen County, NC. 17. ii. MALE KING, b. Bet. 1810-1820, unknown. 18. iii. GEORGE WASHINGTON KING, b. Abt. 1815, unknown; d. Aft. 1854, Reedy 7 17 December 2005 9:03 PM

Meadow, Bethel Township, Bladen County, NC. 19. iv. STREET ASHFORD KING, b. 10 August 1816, Georgia; d. 25 December 1898, Bladen County, NC. 12. ELIZABETH ANN 4 ASHFORD (ANN 3 BRYAN, EDWARD 2, THOMAS 1 ) was born in Bladen County, NC. She married JOHN MCGILL. He was born Aft. 1775, and died 29 May 1835 in near Cheraw, SC. Notes for JOHN MCGILL: John McGill is listed in the 1800 census of Cumberland County, household number 356. He was household number 593 in 1810. In 1820, you find John in Bladen County with 3 males 0-10, 1 male 26-45, 1 female 16-26, and 1 female over 45. Since Street Ashford had died between 1816 and 1820, John had obviously moved to Bladen upon his inheritance of the Street Ashford estate. It was stipulated that John be the caretaker of the estate while Street Ashford's wife Ann was still living. Upon her death John would take over the entire estate. John McGill appears to have been County Surveyor for Bladen County. John left a will in Cumberland County in 1829. He died 29 May, 1835 near Cheraw, SC while enroute to the West to join his sons who had emigrated earlier in the spring of 1835. Children of ELIZABETH ASHFORD and JOHN MCGILL are: 20. i. ASHFORD BRYAN 5 MCGILL, b. 05 December 1814, Bladen County, NC; d. 14 July 1899, Austin, Travis County, TX. ii. JOHN EDWARD MCGILL, b. 20 March 1816. iii. FEMALE MCGILL, b. Abt. 1824. iv. FEMALE MCGILL, b. Abt. 1826. 13. NATHAN 4 BRYAN (WILLIAM 3, PHILEMON 2, THOMAS 1 ) was born 23 January 1801. He married MARGARET "PEGGY ANN" ALLEN, daughter of EPHRAIM ALLEN and NANCY SCRIVEN. She was born 17 February 1811. Child of NATHAN BRYAN and MARGARET ALLEN is: 21. i. WILLIAM HENRY 5 BRYAN, b. 29 January 1839. 14. SARAH 4 WHITE (ANN 3 SIMPSON, SARAH 2 BRYAN, THOMAS 1 ) was born Abt. 1787 in Bladen County, NC. She married JAMES MUNCE, son of MATTHIAS MUNTZ. He was born Abt. 1781 in Bladen County, NC. Notes for JAMES MUNCE: No proof that James is the son of Matthias Muntz. Children of SARAH WHITE and JAMES MUNCE are: i. ELIZABETH A. 5 MUNCE, b. 08 December 1814. 22. ii. AMY MUNCE, b. Bet. 1817-1818, Bladen County, NC; d. Aft. 1880, Reedy Meadow, Bethel Township, Bladen County, NC. 23. iii. JOHN MUNCE, b. Abt. 1820. 8 17 December 2005 9:03 PM

24. iv. NANCY A. MUNCE, b. 11 May 1824; d. 28 December 1889. 15. WILLIAM 4 BALDWIN (WILLIAM 3, AMY 2 BRYAN, THOMAS 1 ) was born 1796, and died Aft. 1880. He married DELPHIA HIGH, daughter of ESAU HIGH and ANN SHIPMAN. She was born Abt. 1807. Children of WILLIAM BALDWIN and DELPHIA HIGH are: 25. i. ESTHER JANE 5 BALDWIN, b. September 1832; d. 16 February 1918. ii. JOHNATHAN R. BALDWIN, b. 1836. iii. WILLIAM H. BALDWIN, b. 1838. iv. DILLON D. BALDWIN, b. 1840. v. DELPHA K. BALDWIN, b. 1843. vi. CHARLES WESLEY BALDWIN, b. 1844. vii. SARAH PENELOPE BALDWIN, b. 1846. viii. DAVID JAMES BALDWIN, b. 01 July 1848. ix. ROSA BALDWIN, b. 1852. Generation No. 5 16. ANNA D. 5 KING (LENORA 4 ASHFORD, ANN 3 BRYAN, EDWARD 2, THOMAS 1 ) was born Abt. 1809 in unknown, and died Aft. 1870 in Bladen County, NC. She married JOSEPH ALLEN Abt. 1830, son of WILLIAM ALLEN and MARTHA SHUFFEL. He was born 19 June 1784 in Duplin County, NC, and died February 1864 in Bladen County, NC. Notes for ANNA D. KING: Anna D. King's maiden name is proven by the death certificates of 2 of her sons. She can be positively identified as a daughter of George King and Lenora Ashford, since Lenora Ashford King Norman was living with her and Joseph in the 1850 census. Notes for JOSEPH ALLEN: Notes extracted from report by Russell Eugene Allen. Copyright RE Allen: Joseph is first listed in the US census of 1810 in Bladen County; the census record indicates 1 male 16-26 and 1 female 45 or older. Joseph and William Allen bought 185 acres of land on 8 March, 1811 from Jonathan Robeson. The land was located near Bryan's Pond in Bladen County. Joseph was a true patriarch in 19th century Bladen County. It also appears that he was a real character. On 24 August, 1813, a bastardy bond was issued in Robeson County naming Joseph Allen of Bladen County as the father of a child born out of wedlock to Ann Daughtrey. Joseph's name appears on the muster roll as a member of the 2nd Regiment from Bladen County during the War of 1812. The household of Joseph Allen was enumerated in 1820 in Bladen County as including 1 male under 10, 1 female 26-45, 1 female under 10 and 1 female 26-45. Joseph was probably married around 1814. On 11 October, 1822, Joseph Allen purchased 160 acres of land from William Fowler for $400. The land was located near the Cape Fear River adjoining the plantation of the late William Cheshire on one side and John Willis on the other. It was named "the Watson Place" 9 17 December 2005 9:03 PM

after William James Watson, a former owner. The Joseph Allen household was listed in 1830 with 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 40-50, 2 females 10-15, and 1 female 20-30. I appears that the first wife of Joseph had died and he had remarried. The name of the first wife of Joseph is not known. The names of his children from his first marriage are partially available. A deed located in the records of Bladen County identifies Willis Allen as a the son of Joseph. According to a later deed, it appears that Nepsy Allen was a daughter of Joseph also. Added by Jason Bordeaux: It is speculated that since Joseph Allen lived next to John Willis, and since Joseph Allen named a son Willis Allen, that Joseph's first wife may have been a daughter of John Willis and Celia Blount. It is also speculated that Celia Allen (b. April, 1818), who married Street Ashford King, could have been another daughter of Joseph Allen. This is based on census enumeration and the lack of eligible unplaced daughters in the other Allen families. If this were to prove true, Celia Allen's name would be further support that Joseph Allen was married first to the daughter of John Willis and Celia Blount. Children of ANNA KING and JOSEPH ALLEN are: 26. i. LENORA 6 ALLEN, b. 1831, Bladen County, NC; d. 19 March 1895, Bladen County, NC. 27. ii. MARY ANN ALLEN, b. 26 April 1833, Bladen County, NC; d. 18. GEORGE WASHINGTON 5 KING (LENORA 4 ASHFORD, ANN 3 BRYAN, EDWARD 2, THOMAS 1 ) was born Abt. 1815 in unknown, and died Aft. 1854 in Reedy Meadow, Bethel Township, Bladen County, NC. He married AMY MUNCE Abt. 1841, daughter of JAMES MUNCE and SARAH WHITE. She was born Bet. 1817-1818 in Bladen County, NC, and died Aft. 1880 in Reedy Meadow, Bethel Township, Bladen County, NC. Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON KING: Since George King is presently shrouded in mystery, it is impossible to determine George Wahsington King's place of birth. It may well have been Georgia, where his brother Street Ashford King was born in 1816. Washington is only listed on the 1850 census of Bladen County and his age is given as 35. This is most likely a rough estimate as is unusual since most of the people were illiterate and did not know their exact age. The age of 35 puts his birth at around 1815. However, I would estimate that it should most likely be the later part of 1814. Washington King is the only name that can be found in Bladen records. We know from family members that his first name was George. The land that he lived on was in the Reedy Meadow area and it was obtained from his father-in-law James Munce and his brother-in-law John Munce. Washington is remembered as a very short skinny man. Some stories say that his brother Street King is remembered as a short Irish talking man. Washington died sometime after his last child Amelia Ann King was born in 1854. His family lived afterwards with James Munce. It should be noted that George Washington King cannot presently be proven as the son of George King. However, all evidence points to the fact that he is. After years of research on this family, I am convinced that he was the son of George. Children of GEORGE KING and AMY MUNCE are: 37. i. JAMES "JIM" WILLIAM 6 KING, b. 02 June 1842, Reedy Meadow, Bethel Township, Bladen County, NC; d. 26 April 1907, Bladen County, NC. 38. ii.
