From the desk of Father James It is finished! After much anticipation and preparation, the eclipse has come and gone. And, at least for us here in Sherwood, uneventful, except for a bit more traffic than usual on Monday afternoon and evening down Highway 99. I must say that I was not taken up with the eclipse frenzy. I did take some time Monday morning to sit outside and enjoy the event. Yes, I had some fully authorized glasses, and got a few nice glimpses as the moon slowly came to cross paths with the sun. I was thinking that it might have gotten a bit darker than it did, but it was indeed certainly dark. During events like this, it is good to take a moment to reflect upon how all of this was not made possible by pure chance, but that it is all a part of something much bigger. This was created by the God of all creation and this event is a perfect reminder of truly how great and wonderful God is. This past Tuesday evening I gathered with our parish leadership councils for an evening of trading eclipse stories and to celebrate the beginning of a new year of doing God s work. This evening was an important way for the Pastoral Council, Finance Council and School Advisory Council to come together to build communion with one another. As members of the Body of Christ that make up the community of St. Francis Parish, it is especially important that these members are familiar with one another as we embark on a new year of ministry. In the coming weeks you will be introduced to the members of the councils and the roles that they play in the leadership of St. Francis Parish and School. Our new principal, Mr. Summer, was present with us as well. Finally, I am grateful for all the responses from you to help with the cost of the repair of our west facing wall on the Church. After Labor Day, I hope to be able to provide you with more information in regards to when this project with take place and where we are with our fundraising efforts. Thank you all so much for your support of our parish!! St. Francis Parish would like to welcome all newcomers and visitors. We turn your attention to the Ministry Table in the narthex of the church where you will find information on the various ministries in our parish and how to contact the coordinator. New parishioners are encouraged to register by calling the office at 503-625-6185. We welcome you as we welcome Christ! St Francis Cookbook We need your recipes!! We are still in need of recipes to make this a successful fundraiser. We would love to have your favorite family recipes to share with our parishioners. Please email your recipes to lov2kwilt@aol.com by Thursday, August 31. If you have any questions please contact LoisMarie Mayer at 503-610- 1000. Thank you for helping to raise funds to support our school. 3

Do you know someone seeking answers to life s questions? If so, invite him or her to consider the Catholic Church. Contact Linda B lackwood at rcia@stfrancissherwood.org or 503-625- 6185. Fire Up Kids Prayer By Letting Them Lead Pbgrace.com Giving kids leadership responsibility appropriate to their development can boost their interest and investment in your family s prayer life - and research shows that kids who have leadership responsibility for faith practices are more likely to continue them as adults. Younger Children Give choices. Let younger children choose which prayer to say; see Grab-Bag Prayers for some fun ways to do this. Start prayer. Let them lead by saying the first few words of the prayer before everyone joins in. Let them pray for you. Invite them to pray for you for example, to bless you at bedtime after you bless them, or to pray over you when you are sick or sad. Older Children and Teens Lead the rosary. Let older children and teens lead the rosary, with help from you as necessary Prepare for prayer. Let them prepare part of your Family Prayer Time the list of intentions, for example, or the choice of song. Light a candle. Let them light the prayer candle or strike a bell to call you to prayer. Plan a prayer service. Invite teens to plan and lead a prayer service for Family Prayer Time that incorporates music, prayers, readings, and candles, incense, or bells. If they are especially ambitious, refer them to Church documents on liturgical practice, beginning with paragraphs 1136 1199 in the Catechism or its parallel in a teen catechism. Serve the Church. Encourage older kids and teens to serve in liturgical ministries that are open to them: youth choir, altar server, usher, etc. Visit PBGrace.com for more prayer resources and for more information on the tips above. 4

In 257, Pope Sixtus II ordained St. Lawrence as a deacon and appointed him first among the seven deacons who served in the church. He had care of the treasury and the distribution of alms among the poor. After the death of Sixtus II, the prefect of Rome demanded that St Lawrence turn over the riches of the Church. St Lawrence asked for three days to gather together the wealth. He worked quickly to distribute as much Church property to the poor as possible. On the third day he presented himself to the prefect, who ordered him to give up the treasures of the Church. St. Lawrence presented the poor, the crippled, the blind and the suffering, and said these were the true treasures of the Church. Like St. Lawrence, Pope Francis recognizes that the true wealth of the Church is its people, especially the poor and vulnerable. Hence his cry, How I would like a Church which is poor and for the poor. In his encyclical, Laudato Si, Pope Francis mentions the poor 61 times. A basic moral test for our society is how we treat the most vulnerable in our midst. In a society marred by deepening disparities between rich and poor, Scripture gives us the story of the Last Judgment (see Mt 25:31-46) and reminds us that we will be judged by our response to the least among us. (USCCB, Faithful Citizenship, 50-51) Prayer for the Hungry (A Mealtime Prayer) Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts: the gift of food, for us and for others; of generosity, that when we have plenty none should go hungry the whole world over; the gift of hearts that grow in humility and compassion for each of your children who suffers misfortune; the gift of your love that extends our reach, and would not deny your gifts to another. Through Christ, Our Lord. Amen. Catholics Confront Global Poverty 5
