In the Archdiocese of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan announced that the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Middletown, NY is one of five holy sites and places of pilgrimage where a Holy Door, a Door of Mercy, is opened to pilgrims who would like to receive a Jubilee Indulgence. To receive a plenary indulgence: it is necessary that the faithful be in the state of grace at least at the time of the indulgenced work is completed. A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addition to being in the state of grace: have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin; have sacramentally confessed their sins receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly better to receive it while participating in Holy Mass, but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required); and pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff In your prayers please remember Suzanne Arnowitz, Barbara Jean Brancato, James Bruno, Harold Daly, Bob and Patricia Frederick, Abby Furco, JoAnne Gale, Evelyn Glynn, John Kennedy, Kim Martin, Florence Navarro, Thomasina Nelson, Mary O Brien, Susan O Brien, Linda Pedersen, Marie Ramirez, Gianna Rose, Lisa Shina, Karen Taphorn, Kathleen Weary and all those in need, that they may recover through the healing power of Our Lord. BIBLE BASICS 17: THE BOOK OF RUTH Fr. Peter Heasley There are a number of Old Testament books that we may call didactic novellas, for they are wellconstructed short stories that teach some lesson about faith in God, obedience to the law, and the life of wisdom. Generally speaking, these are the books of Ruth, Tobit, Esther, and Judith. The Book of Jonah, one of the twelve Minor Prophets, also fits this style, as do some of the stories contained in other books, like that of Susanna in the Book of Daniel. Some of these books fit well into the grand historical sweep of the Old Testament, like the Book of Ruth, while others make no claim to historical accuracy, like Esther and Judith (the Book of Tobit is very historically accurate, but makes no claims as to the actual existence of its characters). LAW Pentateuch Historical Books Often, the heroes of these stories are women, and in different ways. Judith is a courageous and crafty widow who works her way into the enemy camp by her beauty and remains there by her virtue. Her speech is full of Genesis Joshua ironic double entendres, by which she leads Holofernes to believe she is Exodus Judges going to help him, when she really is out to behead him. Esther saves her Leviticus Numbers Deuteronomy RUTH I and II Samuel I and II Kings I and II Chronicles people not by strength and cunning, but by weakness. She faints upon seeing her husband upon his throne, the great king Ahasuerus, and he rushes to her aid. He promises her the banquets at which she will intercede for the Jews of Persia. It is Ruth s faith in her mother-in-law, Naomi, that brings her to salvation as a Jewish convert. A Moabite, she has just lost her Israelite husband. She accompanies Naomi back to the latter s hometown of THE DIDACTIC NOVELLAS RUTH Esther Judith Tobit Jonah Parts of: Genesis, Daniel, II Maccabees Bethlehem. In so doing, she comes to faith in the God of Israel, saying: Wherever you go I will go / wherever you lodge I will lodge. // Your people shall be my people / and your God, my God. / / Where you die I will die, / and there buried (Ru 1:16-17). Soon after settling in a recently won Promised Land, God rewards her with a new husband, Boaz. Boaz is a wealthy landowner, seemingly older, who protects Ruth. He would like to marry her, except for one problem: someone else has the right to marry her first. It is the Law of Moses that generates the plot here; all of the characters are rather sympathetic. This is the levirate marriage law, in which a brother of the deceased must marry his widow and raise up heirs for him. Ruth s deceased husband has a close relative in Bethlehem who must do this. Boaz, knowing this, works the system. Rather than deceive, he overloads the burden upon this unnamed relative. There is another law, that of the redeemer, or go el, who must buy, that is redeem, the deceased s property from his widow, thus providing her with monetary support. Boaz calls the elders together, informs the redeemer of his right to purchase property, and adds to this the duty of marrying Ruth. This is too much for him; he gives up his right, and Boaz is able to marry Ruth. As the author soon informs us, Boaz and Ruth are the great-grandparents of David, the king of Israel, and as we know, then, ancestors in the flesh of Jesus of Nazareth. Page 6-446 St. John
