Dear Folks, I have just, without realizing it, erased my weekly letter to you. Two hours gone. So now I offer a shortened if not frustrated version before the bulletin folks kick and scream for my delay. Please pray for Bishop Loverde who recently underwent spinal surgery. God bless him and his healthcare workers. All of us with lousy backs wince when we here of others in such maladies. God bless him indeed. Mrs. Allison Hagert, youth director for the parish youth group will soon leave us to take a new job as youth director in Arizona. God bless her and her husband Josh. They and new baby offered a wonderful example of marriage and family life for our two youth groups in the parish. She will leave us at the close of this Summer s diocesan work camp. They will be missed. Fr. Moretti has arranged for the upcoming visit of the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. It will be here for one day. Tuesday June 14 th fromm 1:00 PM to 6:30 PM. Many thanks goes out to James Noakes and the parish choirs for their recent concert of classical religious music. It was spectacular and I am hoping we can record the event next year. God bless them for their many hours of preparation. Soon the Dominican sisters will return to us for the annual Faith Camp. It is slated to take place from Monday June 13 th to the 17th. The daily gatherings will start at 9:00 AM and finish at Noon. The program is open for children from Kindergarten to Sixth Grade. Please call the parish office (540-347-2922) to register or you can register on the parish website at: http://www.stjohntheevangelist.org/pdfs/cfc%20- %20VBS/CFC%20Registration%202016%20June%20landscape.pdf (Applications close on June 10th.) The homeschoolers provided me with a copy of their annual picture album. It is great work, displaying many of the activities offered through home school program. Please stop by the rectory to see it if you like. Has anyone noticed a new found luster in the parish gardens. God bless the Hispanic Community, along with Fr. Rivera, and all the work they offered with mulching. The Knights of Columbus were also out trimming trees and bushes. God bless them all for making the parish grounds sparkle. Let us all pray for one another. OUTSIDE THE BOX: During this past week Cardinal Sarah, prefect for the Vatican Congregation for Liturgy recently offered an interview suggesting the priest at Mass may, during the liturgy of the Eucharist, (section of the Mass starting with the offertory and proceeding to the closing prayer) face Ad Orientem (East). That is on the opposite side of the altar, with their backs to the people. http://www.catholicherald.co.uk/news/2016/05/26/vatican-liturgy-chief-urges-priests-to-celebrate-mass-facingeast/ For time being this parish will continue the current practice where the priest faces outward to the people until the diocesan administration should direct us to face Ad Orientem. In the meantime the priests/deacons will, in transit to the pulpit/ambo bow in front of the altar as they offer their silent prayer before reading the gospel. The prayer is: Lord, be in my heart and on my lips that I may proclaim Your Gospel worthily and well. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Why the modification? Because the altar is the symbol of Christ s sacrifice on Calvary but the tabernacle actually holds the True Presence of Jesus Christ. It is more accurate to bow toward the Lord than the symbol. Bowing from the front allows for both to be honored at the same time. Collegiate Answer. The only country in the world designated by the United Nations as an International Heritage Center is the, Vatican City State. Collegiate Question. This is one of my favorites. In honor of Mrs. Sue Tullington, director of the Parish Café each Sunday during the year. Who were the Dough Girls? And, how did they come to meet the Dough Boys? Good hunting. Fr. Gould 4

Greetings! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday weekend. I told the students we were preparing to build an ark if the rain does not stop-lol. Our students need to exercise at recess, so you can imagine the repressed energy took a toll on the adults! I would like to thank all of you, the parishioners, for all the support you have given the elementary, pre-school and myself over the last five years. As I leave this wonderful parish school, I reflect on how devout you all are, and how you help and look out for one another. Fr. Gould, as your Pastor, leads this culture, but you all perform it. Please continue to support, spiritually and financially, our pre-school and elementary school. This is a parish ministry that is essential, for what is more important than your children?our Lord felt this way and so do I! Lots of great things happening around the campus. Congratulations to second grade teacher, Jill WILLIAMS for spearheading the St. Jude Mathathon. Almost $1,700 was raised for St. Jude's Children's Hospital. In addition, sponsored by SJES librarian, Linda Hammelman, the annual Used Book Sale, housed in Mercy Hall due to torrential rain, netted over $1,650, the highest amount ever. The Giving Tree fundraising effort has raised $11,350 so far, many of the contributions coming from generous parishioners and parents. Thank you one and all- our goal is $100,000, and hope this can be used for a multitude of programs and to lessen the parish financial burden from the school. The Pre-K students graduated on May 25 with a delightful program in Trinity Hall. Have a great week and God bless you! Are You Interested in Learning more about the Bible? New this Year! Study the Bible at your own pace and at home. Parishioners, family and friends, and even new friends can sign up to watch the videos online and get together for discussions at any time and place they wish. The bible studies to be made available are listed below. Whenyou visit the parish website and click on the Adult Bible Study picture it will take you to a page with available studies. Then click on the title of a bible study and you will find the link to sign up for the Bible studies that St. John's is making available. Once you log in and purchase the study materials, you will be able to watch the videos at your convenience. Please look for future studies in upcoming bulletins and on the parish website. These Studies were designed to form a solid foundation for an ongoing parish Bible Study program. We hope to add other studies in the future. If you have any questions, please call the Religious Ed office at 540-347-2922 x209. The first Study, started in October, was The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation. The 24 lessons in The Bible Timeline guide the student of Scripture through the reading of the biblical narrative. In 2013, Matthew: The King and his Kingdom, another 24-part study, was the follow-up to the Scripture narrative in The Bible Timeline. The gospel of Matthew explores the life and mission of Jesus. Following Matthew was Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom **in 2014. This study shows how the Church continued the work of Christ after the coming of the Holy Spirit. ** Available here soon In the early summer of 2015 we offered Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother in one day. This study is an extraordinary pilgrimage that reveals Mary's unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives. In the fall of 2015 Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come an 11 part study showed us how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately connected with the kingdom of heaven. In this study you will discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean. You will see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the "end times." It is a revelation of God as our Divine Bridegroom and the Church as his spotless Bride, forever united in a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage that we enter into every time we celebrate the Mass. In 2016 the Bible Study group covered James: Pearls for Wise Living described as a book of wisdom. James is a compilation of teachings intended to help the fledgling church in the face of persecution. YOUNG @ All over 55 are welcome. We meet the first Friday of each month at Mercy Hall at 9:15am. The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death. AVAILABLE NOW!
