GOSPEL MEDITATION Holy Spirit Parish In our modern times, symbol can seem to have lost its value. The most recognizable "signs" are ones we see on the road or the branding in advertisements. The logos for major companies don't do much more than perk our interest or disdain. They surely don't deliver on their promises for our lives to be happier, healthier, and easier. On this feast of Corpus Christi, we hear the account of the Last Supper. This was Passover, an ancient sign of the covenant of Moses. The Hebrew people celebrated God's providential care for His people. To the listening disciples, Jesus makes a very bold claim: "This is my blood of the covenant". At the time of the first Passover (the redemption of the Hebrew people from slavery to the Egyptians), the blood of the sacrificial lamb was spread on the lintels of the doorpost. Tomorrow, some of the disciples would witness the blood of the new covenant spread across the wood of the cross. Christ's Body and Blood are more than a sign. They are a sacrament. In the sacrament, the sign makes real what it signifies. More than ritual, a sacrament enacts truth of the covenantal love of God and His promise of fidelity. It's a promise God keeps. The same bread and wine of that first Holy Thursday liturgy becomes, throughout the centuries and until the end of time, the very Body and Blood of Christ. On this feast, we celebrate the unfailing covenantal love of our God. As you partake in the Eucharist today and next Sunday, and the Sunday after that, remember that you receive neither a meaningless sign nor an empty offer. You receive God Himself, as He fulfills His promise to remain with us always. The Holy Spirit Parish Choir will continue to sing during the summer months. It will next sing on Saturday, June 23, at the 4 PM Mass at St. Mary in Wells. If you would like to join the choir, please contact Lisa White at lisafohlinwhite@gmail.com. Although registration won t begin for several more weeks, we are assembling our leadership team now. We need volunteers to help with collecting and organizing supplies, decorating, painting, leading the children through activities, teaching activities, playing games, preparing snacks, assisting with music, and much more! Vacation Bible school team members have a lot of fun while sharing the love of Jesus with others! Grandparents and teenagers make especially fantastic Vacation Bible School team members, and children of Station Leaders attend for free!!! If you would like to volunteer for this amazing event, or need more information, please contact the parish director of Faith Formation, Carolyn Houston, at 646-5605, 985-6252, or carolyn.houston@portlanddiocese.org. Youth Ministry Matthew 25:35 Meal For I was hungry, and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink; a stranger and you welcomed me... (Matthew 25:35) The Matthew 25:35 Meals put on by the high-school youth ministries of both Holy Spirit Parish and St. Therese of Liseux Parish are continuing to grow! The meals are served every second Tuesday of the month at St. Ignatius Church Hall in Sanford from 5:30-6:30 PM. Over the past few months, teens from both parishes have served more than one hundred meals to those in need. Holy Spirit parishioners have been wonderfully generous with past donations for this monthly meal effort. If anyone would like to support this community meal project, gift cards to Hannaford, Walmart, or Shield s Meats in Kennebunk, are welcome, and will be used to purchase the necessary supplies. All donations should be labeled youth ministry, and dropped off at either church site. Support in the form of prayers for volunteers and guests are also appreciated! Thank you for your assistance with this community service project. If you have any questions, please contact Carolyn Houston at 985-6252, 646-5605 or carolyn.houston@portlanddiocese.org.
