No XSTATIC next week because of Mother s Day, but save the date: XSTATIC End of the Year Bash is May 21st! May Crowning a Marian Celebration One of the defining aspects of being Catholic is devotion to Mary. We have a tradition at Saint Anthony Parish that the Preschool or Kindergarten children bring flowers to Mary on the first Sunday in May for the May Crowning, the feast that recognized Mary as queen of heaven and earth. To a person of any age, this is a mighty big title, but to a child of five or six or seven, it expands to enchanting, magical proportions. How many queens does one get to meet in a lifetime, much less crown or place flowers around her. The May Crowning marks a new spiritual season. Our Mary, queen of heaven and earth, lifts us right out of the last long days of winter and firmly plants our hearts in the warm and promising soil of spring. So let us join in the singing Hail, holy Queen enthroned above, oh Maria. Hail, mother of mercy and of love, oh Maria. Triumph all ye cherubim, Sing with us ye seraphim. Heaven and earth resound the hymn. Salve, Salve, Salve Regina. EMBRACED BY JOY Let s celebrate the Blessed Mother in her month of May by spending a Day of prayer, reflection and spiritual companionship by the ocean. DIOCESAN NEWS, CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING & MORE PARISH EVENTS What is an Aspergillum? An aspergillum is the device that is used to sprinkle holy water. During the Easter Season, it is filled with holy water, which is then sprinkled on the faithful during Mass. If possible, the priest walks among the people, blessing them with this new holy water that was blessed at the Easter Vigil. From the Pastor s Desk: Throughout the Easter season, throughout the church liturgical year we are on a pilgrimage, a journey of faith. For those who have traveled to the Holy Land it helps to focus our faith recognizing the Abrahamic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The rest of this article comes from Msgr. Larkin s forward to a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. According to a Stockholm University Study in 2011, pilgrims visit the Holy Land to touch and see physical manifestations of their faith, confirm their beliefs. One of the great Biblical scholars of the Holy Land has said that the land is the fifth Gospel. In late February of 2018, Msgr. Larkin will lead a pilgrimage to the Holy Land for 12 days, and I am willing to assist him as co-chaplain. In the Holy land of Jesus we read the scriptures in their home in order to meet the Lord in new ways. A pilgrimage is a journey. It is not a tour nor simply a visit or a trip; it is a metaphor for our lives as Christians. The Third Eucharistic prayer prays for your pilgrim church. Our life long pilgrimage is a journey within the community of the church so that a journey to the Holy Land is a joint venture. God can touch us through the places we visit, the readings we listen to, the prayers we offer, and through our fellow pilgrims. In the course of the pilgrimage we will reflect on the central themes of our faith in the birth, ministry, passion and death, and resurrection of Jesus. We do not simply look to the past, but celebrate with prayer and ritual our own participation in the mystery of Christ. A pilgrimage takes us to a different place. It also invites us to journey inward to encounter God within each of us who have been gifted with his Spirit. A Spiritual Journey by Wendell Berry And the Word cannot be discovered by a journey of miles, no matter how long, but only by a spiritual journey. A journey of one inch very arduous and humbling and joyful, by which we arrive at the ground of our feet, and learn to be at home. If you are interested in participating in this pilgrimage to the Holy Land in February 2018, please contact me via email so that I can forward your name and email address to Msgr. Larkin so that you can begin receiving the background material for the pilgrimage. He will send out the itinerary when George s International Tours prepares it in consultation with him. Expect to visit Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Bethany, the Jordan river, the Galilee, Capernaum, Nazareth, Cana, Mt. Carmel and more. There will be many Constant Contact emails you will receive over time, 108 pages of background, history, and context material to prepare for the journey. I look forward to traveling with you. Easter Blessings Fr. Larry Hendel, Pastor Saint Anthony Prayer Box In the Vestibule you will find a prayer box and some blank note cards. You are invited to write your anonymous prayer intentions on a card and place it in the box. The box will enter the Church with the procession and be placed at the altar. If you were unable to place your prayer in the box before Mass, you are welcome to do so when you approach the altar during the stewardship collection. The prayers will not be read out. They will be acknowledged with the Prayers of the Faithful and then shredded after the 5:30 p.m. Mass so they can be lifted up in prayer all day! May those intentions you keep in the silence of your hearts feel heard in a new and supportive way. SAINT ANTHONY PARISH CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING COMMITTEE Stewardship Reflections And Peter said to them, Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ... ACTS 2:38 The word repent means to turn from sin, to change our actions. When it comes to change, do we take responsibility for change or do we think that others have to change instead? Change that is permanent comes from within, we must take control and be disciplined. Remember though that we are not alone, Jesus is there to help lighten the load. Save the Date for our Parish Picnic June 11, 2017 This year will be even bigger as we celebrate Fr. Larry s 40th anniversary of ordination. SAS (Saint Anthony Seniors) HAPPENINGS Please plan to attend our last business meeting before summer break on Friday, May 12th at 7 p.m., in the Church. We will be making final preparations for our Mother s Day Bake Sale (May 13/14) and finalizing plans for our summer picnic on Thursday, June 15th at Almaden Lake Park, among other items. Tom Victorine, SAS President Second Collection May 14th Next week, our parish will participate in a national collection for the Trinity Dome to complete the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC, before its 100th anniversary. Also known as America s Catholic Church, the National Shrine has been a century in the making, built by and for the faithful of our great nation in honor of our Blessed Mother, the patrons of the United States. Become a part of Mary s Shrine and help to bring to completion our church! For more information, please visit: www.trinitydome.org
