Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - August 9, 2015 www.oviedocatholic.org The ASSUMPTION of the BLESSED VIRGIN MARY "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord; my spirit rejoices in God my savior. For He has looked upon his handmaid's lowliness; behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed." Luke 1:46-48 Join us to celebrate a bilingual Mass Saturday, August 15-10AM Pastor: Fr. Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Friends in Christ, We have been reflecting at Sunday Mass on the Gospel of John, Chapter 6. It begins with fear. The natural desire to help others is tempered by the fear that you will not have enough for yourself. Drawn more deeply into the mystery of the Eucharist, you are set free from the fear that you will not have enough. You are set free in the Paschal Banquet to give yourself to others as Christ gives himself to you. This week, Jesus tells us that he is the bread of life. He tells us that he gives us food for the journey. He gives us himself. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life (John 6:54). Jesus gives eternal life to whomever receives him. Notice that Jesus uses the present tense to talk about eternal life. He does not say, You will have eternal life after you die. He says, Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life. Eternal life is here and now. Eternal life is much more than unending life beyond death. It is in the present. Eternal life is life so rich and full that we yearn that it may never end. Eternal life is the opposite of 1 eternal condemnation (John 3:14-18). Eternal life promises life free from sin and death (John 6:50-51). Eternal Life is life itself, Pope Benedict XVI wrote in his reflection, Jesus of Nazareth, real life which can also be lived in the present age and is no longer challenged by physical death. And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent" (John 17:3). Eternal life is friendship with the living Lord. His friendship frees you from the fear that you will not have enough. One cold morning in late January, John ran into Joe on campus. Both were students at the university. John started to complain about all the papers he had to write, the tests he had to take, and the craziness of fraternity life. He expected a sympathetic response from Joe, a fellow Catholic. But Joe looked him in the eye and said, You know, John, if you really believe in Jesus, then nothing else really matters that much. His words struck John like a bolt of lightning. Joe walked on, but John stood still, electrified. Something in him responded to the truth that Joe had spoken. From that cold morning in late January, John began to change. John joined the Jesuits. He eventually became Father John. As a Jesuit priest, Father John Dear has been arrested dozens of times for civil disobedience against violence and war. He has written many books including A Persistent Peace. You know, John, if you really believe in Jesus, then nothing else really matters that much. Taking to heart those words, Father John Dear found real life. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament helps you to taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34:9). Lord does great things for others with the little you give him, even if it is only a barley loaf. This week, save a date in your calendar to take advantage of the extra opportunities for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Read Chapter 6 of the Gospel of John while spending a holy hour in front of the tabernacle. Extra times are listed in the bulletin. Taste and see the goodness of the Lord! In Christ, Father David

Saint of the Week St. Maximilian Kolbe, Priest and Martyr- Feast Day- August 14 St. Maximilian Kolbe was born in 1894 in Poland and became a Franciscan priest. He contracted tuberculosis and, though he recovered, he remained frail all his life. Before his ordination as a priest, Maximilian founded the Immaculata Movement devoted to Our Lady. After receiving a doctorate in theology, he spread the Movement through a magazine entitled "The Knight of the Immaculata" and helped form a community of 800 men, the largest in the world. Maximilian went to Japan where he built a comparable monastery and then on to India where he furthered the Movement. In 1936 he returned home because of poor health. After the Nazi invasion in 1939, he was imprisoned and released for a time. But in 1941 he was arrested again and sent to the concentration camp at Auschwitz. On July 31, 1941, in reprisal for one prisoner's escape, ten men were chosen to die. Father Kolbe offered himself in place of a young husband and father. And he was the last to die, enduring two weeks of starvation, thirst, and neglect. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1982. Faith formation Sunday, August 9, 2015 WELCOME! Come & See Have you been coming to Mass but are not Catholic? Has God placed upon your heart an openness to becoming Catholic, and a longing for a closer relationship with Him as you search for answers to your faith questions? If so, we invite you to look deeper into the Catholic faith. Join us as we plant the seeds of faith and explore the richness and traditions of Catholicism. Inquiry sessions for the Christian Initiation process (RCIA) have started. These gatherings are for inquirers who are not baptized, as well as those who are baptized in another faith background, or baptized Catholics who have not received any other Sacraments. We invite you to ask questions of what Catholics believe in an open, informal and welcoming environment. Come and See Contact Donna Scimeca at 407-365-3231 x121 or dscimeca@oviedocatholic.org. Sponsor Ministry (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Are you being called to walk the journey of faith with someone who wants to become Catholic? An RCIA Sponsor supports an Inquirer seeking the faith to understand Catholic traditions and way of life, not by being a teacher, but by supporting the person and sharing their own experiences of being Catholic. Sponsors are not expected to know the answer to every question, but should have a willingness to share their faith,be welcoming and hospitable, and a good listener. Sponsors must be practicing Catholics, received the three sacraments of initiation, and if married, then married in the Catholic Church. Many sponsors find that serving in this ministry renews and enriches their own faith. Training will be provided. Sunday, August 9, 2015 Pope Francis Encyclical Laudato Si -"Praised Be In Laudato Si," the most recent encyclical by Pope Francis about the Church's teaching on caring for creation, he says that caring for creation concerns human relationships. No matter who you are or where you find yourself in relation to protecting the environment, Pope Francis has this message for you: I invite all to embrace with open hearts this Encyclical which is in line with the Church s social doctrine (General Audience, June 17, 2015).
