Transcription:

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe Solemnity of Christ The King Pope Pius XI declared the celebration of the kingship of Christ in 1925 that we might be reminded every year to whom we should look for leadership that we might remember who our king is. When we recognize the kingship of Christ peace and harmony will be the result; for with the spread and the universal extent of the kingdom of Christ [all people] will become more and more conscious of the link that binds them together, and thus many conflicts will be either prevented entirely or at least their bitterness will be diminished. When once [we] recognize, both in private and in public life, that Christ is King, society will at last receive the great blessings of real liberty, well-ordered discipline, peace and harmony. [Encyclical of Pope Pius XI, 1925] A good king is first and foremost a provider for his people. In every choice and decision that he makes, the good of the people he rules and is responsible for should be his first concern. A true king is first and foremost a servant of God, who alone is the true and perfect king. As Carl Olson notes in Bishop Robert Barron s "Priest, Prophet & King", King David recognized that, A king must sacrifice his desires and aspirations for the good of the people and the kingdom; a good king must die to himself and be humble in his ways. A good king puts God before himself; he turns his back on the usual trappings of earthly kingship: wealth, glory, military might, political allegiances, and temporal comfort. Jesus Christ is the best of kings, loving and caring for us more than we can ever possibly understand, sacrificing himself on the cross that we might have eternal life. Now more than ever, it is time to heed the words of Pope Pius XI and truly recognize the kingship of Christ in our lives. No matter how any of us feel about the results of our recent election or worry for the future of our nation and our world, we can put such worry aside, for we have a king who loves and cares for every aspect of our lives. Let us truly rejoice in Christ s kingship over us, living lives of love and compassion for our brothers and sisters both here in our community and throughout the world. As we seal the Holy Door, we shall be filled, above all, with a sense of gratitude and thanksgiving to the Most Holy Trinity for having granted us an extraordinary time of grace. We will entrust the life of the Church, all humanity, and the entire cosmos to the Lordship of Christ, asking him to pour out his mercy upon us like the morning dew, so that everyone may work together to build a brighter future. How much I desire that the year to come will be steeped in mercy, so that we can go out to every man and woman, bringing the goodness and tenderness of God!
