ST. PATRICK CHURCH Page 3 PORTLAND, MICHIGAN Camelot Restored 2 Samuel 5:1-3 Christ is our king. If you live in a country with a king this sounds like treason. If you live in a country without a king it sounds like mutiny. No matter where you live, it sounds like faith. The image of a king comes primarily from the stories of David, the ideal king of Israel. David ruled many years and his kingship became a kind of Camelot, a perfect period in which the nation flourished and God seemed pleased. David was flawed, of course. He sinned. He ignored God s word. But God still loved him, and David remained an extraordinary example of leadership. David began his reign as the successor to Saul. The elders of the people came to David in Hebron and made an agreement with him that he should be their king. Why did they choose David? He had a good war record. He led the Israelites out and brought them back. He also had a relationship with God, and God appointed him to leadership: You shall shepherd my people Israel and shall be commander of Israel. Because of his exploits and his faith David ruled. David prefigured the reign of Jesus. Jesus exercised his kingship by his wondrous deeds, spellbinding preaching, and intimate prayer with the Father. There is no king but Jesus. Jesus lived out all that David aspired to be, but without sin. As we acclaim Christ our King, we do so knowing he is our model of leadership, prayer and power. Written by Paul Turner. Admission to Christ s Kingdom is paid with the currency of acceptance, forgiveness, attention to the poor and love of one s enemy. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS F.giving thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light. COLOSSIANS 1:12 God wants us to be happy! Instead of looking at the Ten Commandments as being restrictive and telling us what we can t do, look at them as guides for living a joy-filled and peaceful life. Most of our problems arise when we put our own needs first or spend most of our time trying to acquire things. Try putting God first in all things instead.. Miscellaneous Quotes by Pope Francis This dialogue is what creates peace. It is impossible for peace to exist without dialogue. All the wars, all the strife, all the unsolved problems over which we clash are due to a lack of dialogue. When there is a problem, talk: this makes peace. It s a wonder that people will spend hard earned money for an artist to turn them into an image with their features exaggerated in unrealistic ways. It s all in good fun. No one takes these drawings seriously, after all, the easiest way to dismiss something is to make it look silly, outlandish and irrelevant. I wonder, isn t that what modern culture has done with the Catholic Church? The truth is, the media is selling us a caricature of the Church every day. Are we buying into it? Christ the King Page 6 November 20, 2016 St. Pat s Hosts College 101 Planning Workshop For many careers today, a high school education is no longer sufficient. Few would argue that point, yet many students go through high school without a good solid plan for college. College planning can be overwhelming, as families grapple with the realities of academic requirements and costs. In addition, many families wait too long to begin planning. Few eighth graders have college on their minds when they sign up for their first high school classes, and yet, that is exactly when the process begins. To help with that planning process, St. Patrick High School is hosting a College Preparation Night in our parish hall. Please mark your calendars for Tuesday, November 29 at 6:00 p.m. and join us. The event is open to everyone. If you ve attended in the past, we invite you to join us again as we ve been working to make this event bigger and better. Mr. Santos Gutierrez from Lansing Community College and Damon Bouwkamp from Aquinas College will be our two keynote speakers. The itinerary for the evening is as follows: 6:00: College fair (meet with college reps and get information) 6:30: Keynote session 1: Financial Aid and The Community College Experience -Mr. Santos Gutierrez, Lansing Community College 6:55: Keynote session 2: College 101, Tips to Success -Mr. Damon Bouwkamp, Aquinas College 7:30: College fair resumes 8:30: College fair ends Currently, we have 12 colleges coming and two military service units. In addition, we are continuing to work out schedules with additional colleges. Representatives from Central Michigan University, Hope College, Aquinas College, Alma College, Albion College, Oakland University, Grand Valley State University, Olivet College, Michigan State University, Lansing Community College, Grand Rapids Community College, Montcalm Community College, the Air Force, the Marines, and Heartland s Institute of Technology will be available to meet with you and your child. In addition, we will have a college tool kit available for you to take home. We are very excited to host this event. I d like to personally invite you and your student to attend this seminar, so you can begin preparing for this important phase of life. It s never too early to begin! Please do not miss this special opportunity to attend these presentations and the college fair right in your backyard. PSIC Billboard PSIC has officially unveiled our new billboards on M-66 with a blessing ceremony performed by Father Larry. We would like to thank many generous supporters including Portland Right to Life, Emily Mulnix of Blue Lake Studios, Mike Cook for coordinating the project, and Dale and Carol Kramer for allowing us to use their land. The billboards have been redesigned to reflect the recent changes at Positive Solutions Informed Choices. They are designed to reach younger clients who are not sure where to turn when faced with a crisis pregnancy. PSIC intends to be a hopeful place for all individuals. The Billboards are located on M-66 about 1.5 miles south of I96" Visit Aquinas College Aquinas College is hosting two AQDays for all high school juniors and seniors interested in visiting their beautiful 117- acre campus.
