A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR One day -- back in the olden days when I was a kid and the telephone was an appliance that hung on the wall in the kitchen and there was only one in the house -- the phone rang and I answered, ''Hello.'' I heard nothing, and so I said hello again. Still nothing, and so I hung up. A minute later, the phone rang again, and my mom picked it up. She said hello, waited a moment, and then said, "Larry?'' Then she began a normal phone conversation with her brother Larry. After their conversation, mom hung up the phone and said to me, ''Uncle Larry said you hung up on him.'' I responded that I had answered the phone but there was no one on the other end, and so I hung up. Mom explained that this was how Uncle Larry made phone calls. He would call someone and then wait for the party he was calling to begin speaking. As a kid, I thought this was silly. But as an adult, I have come to appreciate Uncle Larry's odd phone etiquette. He is a quiet, introverted man and an interesting contrast to his late wife my Aunt Marie, who was extroverted, loud, and always the life of the party. Even though Uncle Larry was the one initiating the phone call, he was always happier just to listen, and that reminds me of St. Joseph. This Sunday is the 19th of March, which ordinarily is St. Joseph's day. But the liturgical rubrics state that the Sundays of Lent are never pre-empted by other days on the liturgical calendar. However, St. Jospeh's day ranks as a solemnity, the highest of feast days, and a solemnity must always be celebrated. So this year, St. Joseph's solemnity is transferred to Monday the 20th of March. So tomorrow we will celebrate St. Joseph, and we will do it sort of like talking to my Uncle Larry on the phone. We begin the talking. We, the Church, celebrate St. Joseph in the liturgy of the hours with the first antiphon for the Office of Readings: The angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph and said: Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; she will give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. In the infancy narrative in the Gospel of Matthew, Joseph is the main character, but he never says a thing, not a word. Rather, he always listens and responds. The angel of the Lord tells Joseph to do something, and he does it without question or argument. Jospeh takes Mary into his home. At the instruction of the angel, he takes his family to Egypt to escape King Herod. Again, Joseph listens to the angel and returns home when it is finally safe to do so. St. Joseph listens. He listens to God, and because he listens to God, he really does not have to say a word. God's word is all that matters. God's word is what impels him to act without question or argument. This St. Joseph's day, celebrate in a different way. You may have the opportunity to enjoy a St. Joseph's day table or some other festivity related to the day, but even before you do that, take a moment to listen. Find a quiet place and time, and turn to God in prayer. Maybe read the infancy narrative in the Gospel of Matthew (chapters 1 & 2). Then quiet your mind and heart and listen to God speaking to you. Listen to the Holy Spirit as he seeks to guide and direct you. Make your celebration of St. Joseph the imitation of this great holy man: make it an experience of listening to God. If you do, you may just discover that God is listening too, just like my Uncle Larry. Fr. Come and join us. STEWARDSHIP FOR LENT HELPING ST. VINCENT DE PAUL The Gospel reading for Ash Wednesday describes the traditional three-part Lenten exercise: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Jesus instructs his followers to turn to God, to turn from self-interest and to deepen their relationship with the Lord in secret. He tells them in effect that a humble and quiet pattern of prayer, self-denial and reaching out to others is transforming and leads to a favorable outcome. What is our plan to turn ever closer to God in this Lenten season? Are we prepared to treat this season as a time to deepen our own relationship with the One who redeemed us? It has been a tradition at Divine Infant Jesus Parish to donate food, paper and cleaning products, and personal products to our St. Vincent de Paul society to distribute to members of our community in need. Below are specified items that may be donated during each week of Lent. These are merely suggestions and any food product, etc., is welcome at any time. Monetary donations are always appreciated as they are used to purchase gift cards and for emergencies. Our faith is reflected most strongly in our actions to help the most vulnerable, especially those who hunger. May God continue to bless your generous hearts. Weekend of March 25-26: Roll, bread, muffin, & cake mixes, frosting, pudding, jello; sandwich, storage, & trash bags, foil, plastic wrap, wax paper Weekend of April 1-2: Coffee, tea, drink mixes such as lemonade and hot chocolate, salad dressings, catsup, mustard, mayonnaise, pickles; body lotions and/or oils, hand lotion Weekend of March 8-9: Pasta such as spaghetti, penne, etc., creamettes, mac and cheese; hand sanitizer, bandaids, antiseptic cream, etc. The shelves are particularly low on pasta sauces and toiletries. THREE-PARISH LENTEN MISSION This Lent the parishes of St. Barbara, Divine Infant and St. Louise de Marillac are joining to host a Three- Parish Lenten mission. Different speakers will give mission talks at each of the three churches. The schedule is as follows: Tuesday, March 21, at 7 p.m. at Divine Infant Church, 1601 Newcastle Ave., Westchester. Fr. He has served at St. James and St. Zachary's as an associate. In 1979, he became the pastor of his home parish in Waukegan, St. Bartholomew s, and served there for 11 years. He then moved to Wauconda to pastor Transfiguration parish and finally came back to St. James in 1995 as pastor. He has been the dean of Lake County and the northwest suburbs and is currently a member of the priests retirement and mutual aid board and is working with new and recently ordained priests. He has been doing parish missions focusing on discipleship for the last 35 years. Tuesday, April 4, at 7 p.m. at St. Louise de Marillac Church, 1144 Harrison Ave., LaGrange Park. Deacon Allen Tatara will speak on How to Listen for God s Voice in an EarBud Wearing World we all love listening to music. In fact, 80% of us agree that music is an important part of our lives for it defines who we are and helps us tune out the rest of the world. And there is the problem: we are using our earbuds to tune out the rest of the world. This talk will help you understand why you may not be able to hear God s voice and provide you with steps you can follow to hear God speaking to you. Deacon Allen is a preacher, speaker, storyteller, musician and evangelizer. He blends storytelling, humor, audience participation, music, and deepseeded spirituality. Deacon Allen serves at St. Hubert Parish in Hoffman Estates. He has been involved with teens and young adults for more than 25 years, and works alongside his wife, Stephanie, as Youth Ministry Coordinators at the parish. Please make an effort to attend all three talks. Parishioners are encouraged to invite their family, friends and neighbors. THIRSTING FOR LIFE-GIVING WATERS Especially during the Lenten, Holy Week, and Easter seasons, the prayer texts of the Eastern Church revel in paradoxical images of Christ: the eternal life who is put to death, the host of the supper who is also its meal, the thirsty crucified one with living water streaming from his side. These images flow from the evangelists' portrayals of Jesus and from his very ministry, during which he often upset or reversed people's expectations about him or the ways of God. This "reversal" is at play in today's Gospel, as Jesus speaks to an enemy foreigner who is also a woman beneath his status. In addition he, the thirsting one, shows the woman to be the one truly thirsting. He--whose parched lips will say "I thirst" before he dies--is the source of life and life-giving water. Lent calls upon us to dwell on how each of us is thirsting for Christ, and it leads us, ultimately, back to the life-giving waters of our baptism into his Body. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. By Archdiocesan regulation and parish policy, parents are required to attend a Baptismal Preparation session before the Baptism of their child. These sessions will usually be held on the first Sunday afternoon of the month. Call the secretary at the rectory (865-8071) to register for the session and schedule the Baptism. D.I.V.M. SERVICES: Communion to the sick, food shopping, necessary transportation, emergency meals, transportation to Mass. Resource information also available. If you need help from any of these services, please let us know as much in advance as possible so the chairpersons can make arrangements and the volunteers arrange their schedules. If you are able to volunteer to help provide these services to our parishioners, we can always use more help. Please call the rectory at 865-8071. WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
