Using the example of a glass ornament being washed clean of mud, we will talk about the mercy and love of God and His ability to forgive us of all our sin through this sacrament. We will also discuss the importance of avoiding sin and how we can pray for the intercession of the saints and angels to help us. If you have not been to the Sacrament of Reconciliation lately, we highly encourage you to go this week. Here are a few questions to ask your son or daughter about Edge this week: Why is it important for us to avoid sin? What can we do if we sin? How does the Sacrament of Reconciliation reveal Jesus great love for us? Life Teen Grades 9-12 This week at Life Night, continuing our series on mercy, we will discuss how to live the works of mercy. The goal of this week s class is to encourage teens to be merciful by participating in both the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. We cover both the spiritual and corporal works of mercy together because we are composite beings, made of both body and spirit, and the entire person is in need of mercy. One of the key concepts we will discuss is dignity. Dignity is the state of being worthy of honor and respect. Each and every person has dignity because each and every one of us is a child of God, made in his image and likeness. When we are merciful to others, we acknowledge and affirm the dignity of the human person.

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 24, 2016 Our Lady of Mercy & St. Brigid Happenings From the Pastor ~ As we move into the New Year, I would like you to know that we move forward with our current trustees remaining in service. Our trustees, Bob Boyce and Shelley Stein at Our Lady of Mercy and Bob Bausch and Ted Darocha at St. Brigid, are very dedicated to their duties as trustees. They are parishioners who are motivated by a sincere love of their parish family and they are blessed with extraordinary business savvy. I am grateful for their council. Fr. Michael Life Teen and Edge Saint of the Week St. Agnes (Feast Day January 21) St. Agnes was a Roman girl who was only 13 years old when she suffered martyrdom for her faith in the year 304. Agnes had made a promise, a promise to God, never to stain her purity. Her love for the Lord was very great and she hated sin even more than death. Since she was very beautiful, many young men wished to marry Agnes, but she would always say, Jesus Christ is my only Spouse. Procop, the governor s son, became very angry when she refused him. He had tried to win her for his wife with rich gifts and promises, but the beautiful young girl kept saying, I am already promised to the Lord of the Universe. He is more splendid than the sun and the starts, and He has said He will never leave me. In great anger, Procop accused her of being a Christian and brought her to his father, the governor. The governor promised Agnes wonderful gifts if she would only deny God, but Agnes refused. He tried to change her mind by putting her in chains, but her lovely face shone with joy. Next he sent her to a place of sin, but an angel protected her. At last, she was condemned to death. Even the pagans cried to see such a young and beautiful girl going to her death. Yet, Agnes was as happy as a bride on her wedding day. She did not pay attention to those who begged her to save herself. I would offend my Spouse, she said, if I were to try to please you. He chose me first and He shall have me! Then she prayed and bowed her head for the death-stroke of the sword. Please pray for those suffering from illnesses. We especially ask that you remember to pray for the following: Barbara Brown, Bonnie Caccamise, Diane Coccia, Cris Condidorio, Gerald Gaylord, Charles Chick Iannello, Nick Kabala, Madonna Lee, Ken MacGregor, Donald Mancuso, Maridee O Geen, and Juliana Spadacino. If you or a loved one is sick and would like to be added to this parish list, please call the parish office. St. Brigid s Happenings Book Club will meet on Tuesday, January 26th at 6:30pm in the Parish Hall. We will be discussing "All The Light We Cannot See," written by Anthony Doerr. Join us for an interesting discussion and refreshments. All are welcome. For those who contributed baby or chemo caps to the Share a Yarn Knit/Crochet Along, we received thank you notes from the Maternity Ward at UMMC in Batavia for the noggin warmers and from the Lipson Cancer Center at Rochester General Hospital for the beautiful and warm hats that were very welcome this time of year. We plan to have another Knit/Crochet Along again this year. Watch the bulletin for details. The next meeting of Share a Yarn will be Monday, February 1 st at 7:00pm. Holy Name Society will meet on Thursday, February 4th in the Parish Hall at 7:30pm. The Ladies of Charity will host their 2nd Annual Dress- A-Girl sewing day on February 6, 2016 starting at 10 am in the Parish Center. All sew-ers and helpers are welcome. Bring along your sewing machine, thread and scissors as we make colorful T-shirt dresses. Refreshments provided. Any questions contact Jennifer 494-0975 or Cheri 494-1889. In two weeks, Sunday February 7 th, the Holy Name Society will hold its annual breakfast. Proceeds from the breakfast are used by the Society to support parish activities and a variety of charitable programs. This weekend the men of the parish (and women if they would like) are asked to take a book(s) of raffle tickets to sell and return the morning of the breakfast. A member of the Society will be in back of church after Mass distributing the tickets. All the proceeds from the raffle will be donated to the American Legion Flag Holder Memorial Fund for the replacement of the bronze flag holders which were stolen from the cemeteries. Save the Date for Sunday, February 7, 2016 for the Holy Name Pancake Breakfast from 8:30 until 11:30am in the St. Brigid Parish Hall. The Diocese of Buffalo World Youth Day Cross proclaims to those who attended WYD in Toronto in 2002 and will travel to Krakow, Poland in summer of 2016 that there is salvation only in Christ, who died and rose from the dead. Pray for the grace of an ever-deepening communion between the parishes in our diocese and that our communion with the universal church be strengthened through the love of Christ poured out for us on the cross. Please mark your calendar for an extremely important event for Our Lady of Mercy-St. Brigid. We will be having a PARISH MIS- SION on March 5th through March 9th. The purpose of a Parish Mission is to renew all of us in our following of Jesus Christ. Our guest speaker is Fr. Mark Yavarone, OMV. Fr. Mark will preach at all Masses on March 5th & 6th. He will then present his mission talks on the evenings of March 7th, 8th and 9th at the St. Peter s Worship Site. In the six weeks remaining before this most important event, lets all do our best to arrange our calendar so that we can attend the mission talks. Please do your best to spread the word! Fr. Michael
