NOVEMBER 2008 NEWSLETTER ARCHBISHOP DUKE COUNCIL 6855 SAINT PAUL S PARISH RICHMOND - B.C. CANADA - WWW. All parishes started small with a small group of people to be where they are today. Let us all Knights be positive in our doings. Whether it is by expanding our membership in our organization, in our parish by reaching out to the young and old through our examples and deeds. Let s not sit back and think that we have reached our expectations. The tunnel is long and still far to be reached, but all is possible if we put an effort on our work to go further in building more Catholic Christian values. My Brother Knights, this month of December is such a glorious month. It brings families together not only at home but also brings us all closer to one another in faith and prayer. It reminds us of giving, sharing with the needy, help our neighbours, the elderly in our community, visit the sick, contact friends far away, reflect on those who are out there with their lives at risk for our enjoyment and peaceful benefit. Brothers spare some time, for prayer make it a part of your Christmas Gift to our Lord. Americo Silva, Grand Knight Archbishop Duke Council 6855 1 P age

Congratulations to Brother Ken! Knight Of the Month for November Ken Chew Brother Ken serves on our Executive in the position of Outside Guard. He is hardworking and deeply committed to the Knights of Columbus. He is presently our Public Relations Chairman of our parish SARAH Program, an addiction prevention ministry promoting healthy life choices. Brother Ken helps out at our monthly pancake breakfast community event, seniors Christmas luncheon program and participates in our weekly sports activities. He was instrumental in the publication of our summer camping fishing photo at the Supreme Columbia Magazine website. Family Of the Month for November Congratulations to Brother Mike and Betty McAtasney! Mike and Betty McAtasney Brother Mike and Betty are a family that have given most of their lives to our Parish and Community. They usher at Sunday mass, visit the sick, organize our Parish s Sisters of Atonement Dinner, C.W.L., and choir. Mike is presently one of our council trustees and has served various council positions throughout the years. God bless you both. Congratulations to you all! State Knight of the Month for November Father Justin Huang State Family of the Month for July Virgilio and Gloria Asuncion Did you know? Gerry Pulchalski My name is Gerry Puchalski. I joined the Knights of Columbus in March 1975. We were the only council for the 3 parishes in Richmond. In my time with council 6855 I have served in all council positions and was Grand Knight from 1986 to 1989, also been in charge of several committees which I, have passed onto new members who are very involved and doing a great job. I am involved in two projects: collecting used stamps and eye glasses. The stamps are trimmed. Being trimmed makes them worth double the price. They are sold to dealers and the proceeds are used to help our seminarians. We work with the Lions Club in our eyeglass program. We gather about 600 pairs of glasses per year. Specialists volunteer their time and travel to 3 rd world countries to help these people get glasses and eye operations where required. Membership in the Knights has been very rewarding to me and the more we get involved the more satisfaction we drive. 2 P age

Past Events 100 YEAR ANNIVERSARY CEREMONY OF THE ARCHDIOCESE It was an amazing Ceremony with over 14,000 people. Amongst them representing our Council and Parish were 7 honour guards, 6 Ushers, Parish Banner Carriers and a Group of members and their wives. Well done and congratulations to you all. NECROLOGY MASS On Sunday November 9 th, we had our necrology mass with a good attendance. Following we had Brother Gerry Puchalski announcing the names of our Deceased Brothers. It was good to see a good number of our Brother Knights present. The following joint council brunch in Ladner also had a good turn out with 41 members represented our council, including 10 widows for which Archbishop Duke Council 6855 is very proud of their presence. REMEMBRANCE DAY Even though it was a very wet day, the ceremony was very dignified, with good attendance from the community at large, as well as the presence of our members who came to pay their respects for our veterans. It was an honour to have our joint council Knights as participants in the laying of the wreath. BLOOD DRIVE Again another great blood clinic attendance at our St.Paul s mobile blood drive clinic on Nov. 7 th. Donations to the blood bank reached 105 % of its target. Big Thanks from C.B.S. to our Parish, community donors, and Knight volunteers. PANCAKE BREAKFAST Nov 16th was another successful day with the number of people from the community in general. The volunteers did a tremendous job as well our St. Paul s Youth Group. Thank you all. Our next pancake breakfast will be on Dec 14 th. Set up will be done after the Seniors Luncheon. 4 th DEGREE EXEMPLIFICATION The hard work of our faithful navigator, Brother Kim Ng with a handful of Knights and kitchen staff did an excellent Ceremony. Not only was the number of the 4 th Degrees from our Council beyond expectations, it also drew the attention of the Ceremonial Master who commended our Council for the work well done. Congratulations to all who took the 4 th Degree. SISTERS OF ATTONMENT DINNER With the supervision of Brother Mike McAtasney, who recruited our Parishioners, again our Parish support to the hungry was a success. Thanks to all Parishioners and our Parish. 3 P age
