A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR This autumn, the Archdiocese will begin Renew My Church, a program designed to reinvigorate and revitalize the parishes of the Archdiocese. For the next several weeks, we will publish articles by Rev. Louis J. Cameli designed to help us develop a theological understanding of what Renew My Church is striving to accomplish. We Belong to Christ in the Church: A Practical Ecclesiology for Renew My Church Father Louis J. Cameli Part 3 The Church is born in the death and resurrection of Jesus, the great mystery celebrated and made present in the Eucharist The night before he died for us, Jesus gathered his disciples around him. He anticipated his death and resurrection, our great and merciful deliverance from sin and death. He gave his disciples, who were gathered as his Church, the Eucharist as the great memorial of his sacrifice to be always present in his Church. This is how Saint Paul describes this moment: the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took a loaf of bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, This is my body that is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way he took the cup also, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. 1 Cor 11:23-26 From the very beginning, believers have understood that the Church was born from the pierced side of Jesus on the cross. So, we find in John s gospel: one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out. He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. John 19:34-35 We are never more the Church of Jesus Christ than when we gather to celebrate his death and resurrection in the Eucharist. There, we are gathered in his name. We acknowledge that he has freed us from sin and death. We recognize this mystery at work in each other. And together, we await his coming in glory, when he will bring all things to completion. Even if we do not know the details of each other s lives, we can never be more closely connected to each other than we are joined in the mystery of his death and resurrection. This is the Church born of the cross and the Eucharist. This is how we belong to Jesus and to each other. Question: Does the Eucharist remind me of who I am because of the death and resurrection of Jesus? Am I aware that in the Eucharist I join my own dying and rising to that of Jesus death and resurrection? Am I aware that the Eucharist connects me with others who share my faith in Jesus? What, really, is the place of the Eucharist in my life?

BLOOD PROGRAM TEAMS UP WITH FREE EYE SCREENINGS Saving lives is a major challenge. And it is twice as difficult in the middle of summer, when many regular donors are on vacations or traveling elsewhere. Nevertheless, area hospitals still need donated blood to keep pace with scheduled or emergency surgeries due to accidents on our roads and in our homes. In addition, the massacre by a gunman in Orlando, Fla., has put another hurdle for our local LifeSource Blood Services, which oversees the Westchester Blood Program, because they reached into its supply to send some blood to ease the need in Florida. The Blood Program s third drive of this year will take place on Saturday, July 23, from 8 a.m.to 3 p.m. at Divine Providence School, 2500 Mayfair. And the donors actually, all of the public will have a rare chance to do something for themselves, and at no cost. The Westchester Lions Club will offer free eye screenings to detect Diabetic Retinopathy and Macular Degeneration. The Lions mobile unit will be parked just outside the school during the blood drive. The Lions will welcome anyone who wants to have their eyes checked. The WBP has changed the title of its drives from Community Blood Drives to West Towns Blood Drives because of the rapidly rising number of out-of-town donors who take part. The local organization also announced that it has surpassed 25,000 units collected since its founding in June 1974. It remains the most prolific community blood group in the Chicago area and one of the most-honored in the nation. So far this year, it has collected 200 units, with three drives remaining. The process of donating blood is safe and speedy, requiring no more than 45 minutes. Questions regarding the drive should be directed to Carl Panek, WBP chairman, at 708-606-4548; for the eye screenings, call Lions member Andreas Brandt at 708-606-3884.

LIVING GOD S WORD We can pray that we find that balance between serving the Lord in our brothers and sisters and spending time in the presence of the Lord, both as members of the community of believers and as individuals whom Jesus loves very much. Copyright 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

REFLECTING ON GOD S WORD Our readings pair up the story of Jesus coming to dine at Martha and Mary s house with God coming to dine with Abraham and Sarah. And just as Abraham turned to Sarah for help in preparing the meal, Martha turns to her sister for a hand. After all, why should one person bear the burden of serving the Lord? But Mary does not come into the kitchen, even after hearing her sister banging things around in there, perhaps a little more loudly than usual. Instead, she stays sitting at the foot of the Lord, listening to him. Martha, not one to keep her thoughts to herself, addresses directly the cause of her sister s prolonged delay: Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? (Luke 10:40). As a matter of fact, Jesus didn t care. What he did care about was that Martha was all anxious and worried about many things (10:41). Jesus did not care about busy Martha but about worried and anxious Martha. Even more simply, what he cared about was Martha. Not the meal, not the table, not the time they ate, or whatever else was bothering her. He just cared about Martha and Mary, too, of course. But he didn t have to worry as much about Mary. Perhaps we could consider this simply a story about Jesus visiting two very dear friends and wanting some time with them both, together. And if that was true then, why wouldn t it be true now? If you find yourself worried and anxious these days, give yourself some time with the Lord. James A. Wallace, C.SS.R. Copyright 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Last Sunday's "Good Samaritan" parable concluded with Jesus' command: Go provide hands-on mercy to the next person you meet, no conditions, no limits, no exceptions. But today, Jesus seems to criticize Martha's hands-on mercy of hospitality, while praising Mary's "hands-off" as "choosing the better part" (Luke 10:42). Mary sat listening (10:39), leaving Martha "burdened with much serving by herself" (10:40). So, is the contemplative life of prayerful silence "superior," but the active life of earning a living, raising a family, running parishes, schools, hospitals, and social service ministries "second-class" discipleship? No; Jesus' example is not either/or but both/and: silent communion with God, boundless compassion for people. If we do not seek Jesus in silent prayer, how will we find Jesus in all others? If we do not serve Jesus in others, will our worship, despite its beauty, be anything but empty ritual? This Jubilee Year of Mercy offers us Jesus' two-fold challenge: both "go and do" and "sit and listen." --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
