Obituaries BRAZIL MOURNS DEATH OF CASSIA ELLER Marco Antonio Barbosa Cassia Eller Photograph by Milton Montenegro Cassia Eller, pop/mpb singer who was enjoying enormous success over the last decade, died December 29th in Rio, at age 39. Physicians and relatives disagree on what would be the cause of death, most probably related to drugs, alcohol and the stress caused by over 100 shows during her last CD's promotional tour. After her appearance in Rock in Rio. she recorded Acustico MTV, which had sold in excess of400,000 copies before her death. Cassia has left an 8-year-old son. Chicao. Daughter of an army officer, Cassia was born in Rio de Janeiro, but grew up in different cities due to her father's assignments. She chose to be a singcr at age 14, when someone gave her a guitar. Later on. in Brasilia (State Capital), she would sing with choirs and trios eletricos (trucks specially remodeled to accommodate a live band. created in Bahia. in the 70s. for Carnival purposes). and trained classical singing, In 1989 she headed to Sao Paulo, passing around a demo tape of the song "Por Enquanro". by Renato Russo. She signed to Polygram and released her first LP. "Cassia Eller". in 1990. Besides "Por Enquanto", the album featured "Eleanor Rigby". (Beatles), and "0 Dedo de Deus". (Arrigo Barnabe and Mario Manga). Eller played a series of shows with Argentinean guitarist Victor Biglione, presenting a blues repertoire that would spread her name as a blues and rock vocalist. The second album, "0 Marginal", came two years later, consolidating her voice's deep, low timbre on the market. Among the tracks, two Jimi liendrix songs ("If Six Was Nine" and "Hear My Train A C omin ' ") and compositions by ltarnar Assuncao, Luiz Melodia and others. I found info on my IIUPP/HUBB line here. IL State Archives http://www.sos.state.il.us/de partmentsjarchivesjarch ives. html Follow the link for "Genealogical Research" and from there follow the link for "Databases" at the top of the page (underneath the picture of the man's face) to see all the databases they have online' TONS of info: military records, marriage records. death records, land records, servitude and emancipation records, and tons of IRAD holdings. I just recently found tons of information on my COVENTRY and I IUPP ancestors in IL as well as WILDER, WORTHEY and others. For death and marriage (and maybe others), they give certificate number as well as names, dates, and locations. Good luck! I will NOT automatically take whatever is posted to the list without permission. If you post something to the list that I think the web page would benefit from, I WILL contact you privately and ask for permission. Basically, what I was trying to get across in the original email is that if you want me to go ahead and put your census info that you submitted on the web page, you should email to let me know the missing information, but also, this is just good practice to use generaily speaking, not just for the list, but for anything, also cite your full sources. As for the census, include AL L information from the census in the, including the state, county, town, and page. Many posts lately have left me to wonder what state or what county the information is coming from. A question has been very valid question has been raised about whether this is against Rootsweb policy. I will check into this, but honestly 1 doubt it. The 3 main reasons I think this: I. The main page as well as the main page for each surname has been updated and broken links fixed. I know the message board links were all broken and that is because Rootsweh decided to do away with them a fter their partnership with ancestry.com and now they are all on ancestry. I have changed all those links and for surnames were I know multiple spellings and there are boards for those spellings, I added them to the boards (KERN and 11UPP lists, this applies to you!). I am working on the rest of the pages, mostly working on tabulating all the census information to make it easier to read. and that should be done for all the surnames by the end of the week. Keep sending me your census data to add to the pages! I would love to have a complete listing for each surname in every state. Right now. a Il the surname main pages have 2 links at the top for census data. the first link is just for the I 790 census for all states (COVENTRY listers. I'm still putting on the info. it's not complete yeti) and the second link is to aii other census years. This second link takes you to a page listing all 52 states with a link for each state that has '--

Genealogy Exchange census data. At this point, there are only a few states that have links for every surname, about 2 or 3 states on average. KERN listers, I'm in the process of rearranging your census data currently on my website to fit this formation. right now it's all on one page. but that will change. The other main change I'm working on is making the pages easier to read. This includes: bold text to make it stand out against the background. and in some cases. bigger font size. Also, you may notice on the bulleted lists that there is a period at the end of each line. This has nothing to do with grammar, but rather, as suggested by a fellow lister, this is done to make easier to read for text to speech programs for the visually impaired. If you have any other suggestions for making the site more "user friendly", drop me a line' Also, I am thinking of having an "unidentified persons" page of photos where people are trying to find out who they are. If you have some that fit this category, please send them to me (in.jpg or.gif format) with as much info as possible that you know (like where the picture was taken if known, approximate year, etc.) and we can try to find out who all our photos are of. Once I'm done with the rest of the work, I plan to start working on that and getting those photos up. Last thing, like I said earlier. someone questioned whether it was aga inst policy of Rootsweb to take information that had been posted to the list and put it on my web page. As I said I would, I contacted Rootsweb and they said there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing this so long as I get permission from the original poster (which I do anyway). Just want to put that out for those who are curious. Ok, now good luck in your research and send me that info you want on the web page' :0) Your list manager, Erin Subject: IELLER] web page address Date: 3 Aug 2003 18:53:33-0700 (PDT) From: Erin Bradford eabradfo@yahoo.co llere is the web page address. hint. it's in my signature' :0) http://homepages.rootsweb.c om/r-kshai Erin I don't know if any of this will link up, but my gggggpa was David Eller, born abt. 1797, living in Iredell County, NC. Genealogy Exchange writes: Iii all. Some of you from AOL will already be aware of this, but for the rest of you. the AOL genealogy chat rooms have moved online' You can access the chat rooms at htt p.. wwv,'. geneaiogyforum.org/c h ats.htm this page gives a schedule for regularly scheduled talks by subject. (usualiy by states). I've been using this for a few day now and it's great' (my screen name is cabradfo) There are a few *bugs*. but realize this is a new chat room so be patient. For those not aware of the changes going on AOL with the genealogy forum right now. here is a brief rundown based on my understanding (this is not any sort of official announcement or anything). The genealogy forum. owned by George (don't know his surname) no longer exists on AOL as it was. The message boards, etc. have or will be taken down and there is only I chat room now, which you can only access through the "Parenting" channel. Many genealogists are leaving AOL in droves b/c of these changes (including mel). Now that there are chats online without going through AOL, there is no need for me to stay there. I still have AIM (screen name eabradfo) that people can contact mc with, and of course this address will stay the same, no change there. For those of you who have contacted me through AOL in the past. please begin to use this address now for all email communication. Check out the rooms and make some more connections. The Genealogy Forum owned by George is now owned by Parenting. ALL the chat rooms arc accessible through Keyword: Genealogy Share Stories and Resources Chats Tab. Parent ing has offered genealogyhosting positions to ALL the former hosts and is in the process of interviewing them now. I know that for a fact because I have an interview scheduled for today and I know of at least one host who has already gotten an "acceptance" email. ALL the former chat rooms are up and available for chatters but not hosted yet. Soon they Will be. In the meantime. chatters can go to those rooms and chat with each other about their research. and new discoveries or whatever. I just needed to clear up some of the erroneous information provided by Erin!' Page 40

George Michael Eller and his Descendants in America DON'T MISS OUT! Only a few copies remain of George Michael Eller and Descendants of His in America, by James William Hook, a son of Virginia Eller Hook and grandson of Harvey Eller, who left Wilkes County, NC in 1852 in a covered wagon with his wife and 8 children. This 4X5-rage book, containing the very first extensive Eller genealogies, was published in 1925 and 1957. Although this 1957 book does not contain recent material, it is a great source of information, and is considered a collectable since no more will be printed. In fact. the initial copies were soon sold out. and the Eller Family Association did a reprint of this book. What a great addition to the library -- something you will want to pass down to your descendants' The price is $40.00, including shipping, while quantities last. Hill Country Witch Accuses Pastor of Harassment Web Posted: 08/04/2003 10:02 AM Maeven Eller leads a pagan circle Sunday in Burnet. Dozens of Wiccans and other pagans turned out to support Margie Allen, a self-proclaimed witch who is accusing a Christian pastor of leading a harassment campaign aimed at ruining her business and driving her out of the region. Deborah Cannon/Austin American-Statesman By T.A. Badger, Associated Press BURNET - A self-proclaimed witch in the eastern Hill Country is accusing a Christian pastor of leading a harassment campaign aimed at ruining her business and driving her out of the region. Margie Allen, who practices the pagan religion Wicca, also charges that the Llano County sheriff's office refused to respond to her complaints and that Rev. Joann Jackson had organized an aggressive effort to force her out of the area. The charges have attracted the attention of the FBI, which says it will investigate the claims by Allen, a consignment shop owner, as a possible civil rights case. Allen says Jackson, her former landlord in Kingsland, ended her lease because of her faith, and that the pastor persuaded another Kingsland property owner to abruptly pullout of a lease deal while Allen was moving in. "They think I'm satanic," said Allen, a Wiccan for the past six years. "We're dealing with very unintelligent people." Allen later moved her Magick Garden shop to Burnet, about 20 miles away. But she says relocating didn't end the harassment by people who would gather maliciously outside. "They'd wait until I was full of customers and then one of them would come into the store and say, 'Weren't you run out of Kingsland because you're satanic,'" she said. "Needless to say, that's not good for business." She also says people would occasionally follow her from the store to her home and would feign trying to run her off the road. "It was intended to antagonize and to frighten," Allen said, "and it did." Jackson, pastor of the Calvary Hill Church in Kingsland, denies that she's responsible for any hostility directed at Allen. "She's tracing in the wrong direction," she said after presiding over the Sunday service at her church. "We've never had any cross words." Allen's beliefs had nothing to do with her decision to end the lease, Jackson said. Rather, her husband's death last fall prompted her to sell the building, so she wanted it empty. On Sunday, however, the building in question had "For Lease" signs in its windows. But Jackson insisted Allen's faith was not a factor in her decision as a landlord. "I have no problem with her at all," she said, adding that Allen was a fine tenant for more than three years. "She's entitled to believe whatever she wants to believe." Page 48
