http://www.biblestudyworkshop.com 2 Text: Luke 11:14-36, Demon Cast Out Various Topics Discussed 14. And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered. 15. But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils. 16. And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven. 17. But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. 18. If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? Because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. 19. And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore shall they be your judges. 20. But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. 21. When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: 22. But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. 23. He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. 24. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. 25. And when he cometh he findeth it swept and garnished.

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.com 3 26. Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. 27. And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. 28. But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. 29. And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. 30. For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation. 31. The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. 32. The men of Nineveh shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. 33. No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light. 34. The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, the body also is full of darkness. 35. Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. 36. If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.com 4 Commentary: Luke 11:14, And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered. I. Jesus is here said to have been casting out a demon that was dumb; that is, the demon had caused the possessed person to be speechless. II. Jesus cast out the demon and the man spoke! (Jesus was the world s greatest speech therapist!) III. This was a miracle of so great magnitude that the multitude who had witnessed this event marveled! A. No one else could restore this man s speech. B. Jesus performed the task ever so easily. Luke 11:15, But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils. I. Jesus enemies charged Jesus with casting out demons by Beelzebub, the prince of the demons. Note: These events are similar to those found in Matthew 12 and Mark 3:20-30 on other occasions, another occasion. A. Beelzebub (Baalzebub) is derived from the old Canaanite god Baal. 1. Beelzebub means lord of the high place. 2. Baalzebub means lord of lies or lord of the dunghill.

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.com 5 3. Baalim is the plural of Baal. Baal was the name of many local Canaanite gods. B. The enemies of Jesus here used Beelzebub to mean Satan or the devil. Luke 11:16, And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven. I. Others in the multitude tried to trick, trap Jesus by demanding of him a sign from heaven. A. They weren t satisfied with the restoring of speech to the man from whom the demon had been cast out. B. The evil multitude, regardless of how many signs and how wondrous miracles were performed, would never have been satisfied. II. The Pharisees frequently demanded more and more signs, but Jesus did not allow himself to be maneuvered, respond to their insistence on signs to satisfy their human curiosity. Luke 11:17, But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. I. Jesus knew the hearts, thoughts of his enemies and said: A. Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation. B. A house divided against itself falls.

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.com 6 C. Jesus declares he is not of the devil because, if that were the case, the devil would be working against himself and his cause would suffer. Note: Matthew and Mark record similar statements made in Galilee. These were evidently spoken in Judea. Luke 11:18, If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? Because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. I. If Jesus, as his enemies charged, had cast out demons by the power of the devil, the devil would then be divided against himself and his kingdom could not stand. A. A devilish kingdom of evil does indeed exist, Jesus declared. B. The devil is too smart to work against himself. Luke 11:19, And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore shall they be your judges. I. The Pharisees claimed the ability to cast out demons. A. Exorcists were numerous in those days among the Jews in Palestine. B. If Jesus cast out demons by Beelzebub s power, it was only natural to assume that the Pharisees did the same thing. C. The Pharisees were saying, Our exorcisms are of God and yours are of the devil. 1. The opposite was true as the pseudo-exorcisms of the Pharisees were not real and were of the devil.

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.com 7 Luke 11:20, But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. I. Jesus declared that if the Pharisees admitted that he had cast out demons by the power of God it would be evident that the kingdom of God had come upon them. A. Exodus 8:19, Then the magicians said unto Pharaoh, This is the finger of God: and Pharaoh s heart was hardened, and he hearkened not unto them; as the Lord had said. B. Moses miracles were of God; the Egyptian magician s works were not of God. C. The Pharisees should see the difference between Jesus signs and their own signs. II. The kingdom of God had indeed come upon them, but the Pharisees didn t understand nor accept this fact. Too bad! Luke 11:21, 22, When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. I. Jesus stated, When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. A. Was Jesus here simply stating a well known fact? Or... B. Was he saying it was permissible for his disciples to guard their houses and to use deadly force in the process? Or... C. Was he using this illustration to teach a spiritual lesson?

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.com 8 II. When someone stronger than the man of the house attacks and overpowers him, he is able to remove the strong man s defense and take possession of his goods. III. Applications: A. Fully armed strong man Satan. B. Strong man s house the world wide dominion of the devil. C. Strong man s goods souls being held in the devil s service. D. Strong man s armour the evil devices used by the devil. E. The stronger person Jesus Christ. F. The spoils souls rescued from the devil. G. Overcoming the strong man total victory of Christ over Satan, of good over evil. H. Taking the armour from the strong man the frustration of all Satan s devices through the gospel. IV. In this conflict no one can remain neutral. Luke 11:23, He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. I. The person who is not with Christ is against him. II. The person who does not gather with Christ scatters.

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.com 9 III. Those who do not actively work with Jesus actually oppose him. Those who do not harvest souls for Jesus scatter souls leaving them in the fields lost. Note: The Jews who opposed Jesus were defeated by the Romans and scattered to the winds where most remain to this very day. Luke 11:24-26, When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. And when he cometh he findeth it swept and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. I. Parable of the Wandering Demon: A. An evil, unclean spirit, after leaving a man, wanders through waterless places seeking rest but finds none. B. The unclean spirit then decides to return to the person he had left. C. When the unclean spirit returned to his former lodging he found it swept and put in order. D. The unclean spirit takes seven other spirits more evil than itself and possesses the same man again. E. The man s final situation; that is, being possessed by eight demons, was worse than his initial situation when he had been possessed by only one demon.

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.com 10 II. This parable tells us clearly that it is not enough to abstain from evil (clean house and put it in order). We must fill ourselves with good so the devils will have no place to live if they wish to move back in. Note: Jesus had related this parable before early in his ministry. Matthew 12:43 ff. III. Parabolic Representations: A. The man possessed by the demon Israel. B. The going out of the demon the response of Israel to the preaching of John the Baptist. C. The swept and garnished period no permanent meaningful change had been made by Israel. D. The restlessness of the demon the continuing and relentless opposition to Jesus ministry. E. Repossession of the man the judicial hardening of Israel, leaving Israel worse after rejecting Christ than at the first. Luke 11:27, 28, And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. I. As Jesus said these things a certain (un-named) woman in the multitude said in a loud voice, A. Blessed is your mother (Mary).

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.com 11 B. Jesus replied that those who hear the word of God and keep it are more blessed than Mary who had the honor of giving him birth. II. This passage is similar to earlier events recorded in Matthew 12:46f and Mark 3:31f. A. Magnificat. Luke 1:48, For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. B. God s spiritual children, faithful in word and deed, are blest most of all. The Sign of the Prophet Jonah Luke 11:29-32, And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation. The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. The men of Nineveh shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. I. As the multitude gathered around Jesus he said: A. This generation is an evil generation. B. This generation seeks after a sign. C. No sign will be given except the sign of Jonah.

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.com 12 D. As Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, Jesus was a sign to his generation. The Ninevites repented at Jonah s preaching and a greater than Jonah was present, but they did not repent at the preaching of Jesus. E. The queen of the South (Sheba) will rise up in the judgment and condemn that generation because she came from afar to hear the wisdom of Solomon and a greater than Solomon was then present and the Jewish leaders did not want to hear what he had to say. II. Israel had refused to believe in and obey Christ and would reap what they had sown. Luke 11:33-36, No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light. The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, the body also is full of darkness. Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light. I. People put lamps on stands, not under a bowl, in the cellar, under a bushel, so that it can give light to benefit all in the house. II. The lamp of the body is the eye. When our eyes are good we see well. Good eyes light the whole body. III. When our eyes are not good, our bodies are left in darkness. IV. If the whole body is full of light, having no darkness, it will be completely lighted (just as a bright lamp fills a house with light).

http://www.biblestudyworkshop.com 13 A. Jesus death, burial, and resurrection was the light that would light every man s way if they would only, with seeing eyes, come to appreciate it. B. To close their eyes to the light of Jesus resurrection and teachings would leave them in absolute darkness. V. Jesus referred to the light of his ministry and gospel on multiple occasions. A. Matthew 5:15, Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. B. Luke 8:16, No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light.
