All Saints Church 14 May 2017 5th Sunday of Easter Family Service Welcome!
Welcome to our Family Service. A particular welcome to Olivers Marks Niedra and Markuss Niedra, who are being baptized today, their family and friends. There is no children s workshop and we all stay together in church for the whole service. Busy bags are available at the door and if anyone gets restless, please feel very welcome to walk about the church with them during the service. Later in the service, everyone is invited to come to the altar to receive communion or God s blessing. All who are communicant members of this or another church are welcome to receive communion. Please bow your head to indicate if you would like a blessing. During communion, the choir sings on behalf of the congregation; this allows us the opportunity to think more deeply about our relationship with God in our lives, through meditating on the words and music chosen for the day. The mass setting today is Missa Aeterna Christi Munera (Palestrina). Refreshments are available after the service. Please feel very welcome to stay and enjoy, and if you have not been to the church before, please do introduce yourself to one of the clergy or churchwardens we d love to meet you. Weekday Communion Services: Tuesday 12 noon; Wednesday 12 noon (both Common Worship); Thursday 10.30am (BCP). Silent Prayer is kept in the chapel on Fridays at 12.00 noon. The Parish is part of an Anglican Team with St John the Evangelist Church in Grove Lane and St John the Baptist in Kingston Vale and also a member of the Local Ecumenical Project with Union Street Baptist Church and the United Reformed Church in Eden Street. Order for a Family Service The choir will sing the Introit: These are they which follow the Lamb (Goss). In a few moments of silence we remember before God the things we have done that are wrong, always remembering God s readiness to forgive us and set us free from the mistakes of the past. Amen The first reading today is Acts 7:55-end. Standing before the high priest and the council, Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. Look, he said, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God! But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed
together against him. Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, Lord, do not hold this sin against them. When he had said this, he died. We remain standing and turn to face the centre of the church from where today s Gospel is read.
John 14:1-14 Hear the Gospel of our Lord according to John: Glory to you, O Lord. The Gospel Jesus said to his disciples: Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father s house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going. Thomas said to him, Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way? Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him. Philip said to him, Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied. Jesus said to him, Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, Show us the Father? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. The Talk The talk today is given by the Rector, Jonathan Wilkes. After the talk, we will process to the font, singing hymn 387, for the baptism of Olivers and Markuss.
The Baptism Faith is the gift of God to his people. In baptism the Lord is adding to our number those whom he is calling. People of God, will you welcome Olivers and Markuss and uphold them in their new life in Christ? All - With the help of God, we will. Parents and godparents, the Church receives Olivers and Markuss with joy. Today we are trusting God for their growth in faith. Will you pray for them, draw them by your example into the community of faith and walk with them in the way of Christ? With the help of God, we will. In baptism Olivers and Markuss begin their journey in faith. You speak for them today. Will you care for them, and help them to take their place within the life and worship of Christ s Church? With the help of God, we will. In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore I ask: Do you turn to Christ? We turn to Christ. Do you repent of your sins? We repent of our sins. Do you renounce evil? We renounce evil. Let us affirm, together with Olivers and Markuss, our common faith: Do we believe and trust in God the Father, source of all being and life, the one for whom we exist? All - We believe and trust in God. Do we believe and trust in God the Son, who took our human nature, died for us and rose again? All - We believe and trust in God.
Do we believe and trust in God the Holy Spirit, who gives life to the people of God and makes Christ known in the world? All - We believe and trust in God. This is the faith of the church. All - This is our faith. We believe and trust in one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The priest asks for God s blessing on the water and then says: Praise God who made heaven and earth Who keeps his promise for ever. The priest then baptises Olivers and Markuss: I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen I sign you with the sign of the cross. Do not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified but fight valiantly under his banner against sin and the devil, and remain faithful to Christ to the end of your life. Amen Receive this light of Christ. God has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and has given us a place with the saints in light. Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. May God who has received you by Baptism into his church, pour upon you the riches of his grace, that within the company of Christ s pilgrim people you may daily be renewed by his anointing Spirit, and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory. We welcome you into the fellowship of faith; we are children together of the same heavenly Father; we welcome you. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. The Prayers of Intercession
The Peace The peace of the Lord be always with you And also with you We offer one another a sign of peace. We return to our places singing the Offertory Hymn 296 (see laminated sheet). A collection is taken for the work of the church, and the bread and wine for the Eucharist are brought to the altar. Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, The glory, the splendour, and the majesty; For everything in heaven and on earth is yours. All things come from you, And of your own do we give you. The Lord is here. His spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts We lift them to the Lord Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. It is right to praise you, Father; Lord of all creation; in your love you made us for yourself. When we turned away you did not reject us, but came to meet us in your Son. You embraced us as your children and welcomed us to sit and eat with you. In Christ you shared our life that we might live in him and he in us. He opened his arms of love upon the cross and made for all the perfect sacrifice for sin. The Eucharistic Prayer
On the night he was betrayed, at supper with his friends he took bread, and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to them, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. Father we do this in remembrance of him: his body is the bread of life. At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine, he gave you thanks, and said: Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins: do this in remembrance of me. As we proclaim his death and celebrate his rising in glory, send your Holy Spirit that this bread and this wine may be to us the body and blood of your dear Son. As we eat and drink these holy gifts make us one in Christ, our risen Lord. With your whole church throughout the world we offer you this sacrifice of praise and lift our voice to join the eternal song of heaven: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of Thy glory: Glory be to Thee, O Lord most high. Invitation to Communion Everyone is welcome to come to the altar to receive a blessing or the bread and wine. Draw near with faith. While the congregation comes forward to receive Holy Communion the choir will sing Lead me Lord (Wesley). Lead me, Lord, lead me in thy righteousness, Make thy way plain before my face. After Communion we say together: Eternal God, whose Son Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life: grant us to walk in his way, to rejoice in his truth, and to share his risen life; who is alive and reigns, now and for ever. A conference for Laity On the 17th June (9.30 to 2.30) there is a conference for church members in the Kingston Episcopal Area called Being confident followers of Jesus today. It is aimed at helping people to deepen their faith and think about how they can help their church grow and develop. If you d like to go ask in the office or speak to Jonathan. The visit will enable us to consider the role of abstract artworks in provoking questions about, and reflection upon, some of the themes that lay at the heart of humanity s religious quest. The Christmas tree festival Only 241 more days until the Christmas Tree Festival begins... It s such a great thing, loved by thousands of visitors but we need a few more fresh hands to help organise. Coffee Morning Rota We need one or two more volunteers. Please see Jonathan or Jennifer Pearce if you can help. The Cafe play area Just a word about this popular resource for visitors to our cafe. We ask all those who use it to tidy the toys after them which, sometimes, they don t. This is on ongoing challenge for us all but please note that it is not the responsibility of our own Toddler Group to keep it tidy at all times in the week. Annual Accounts for 2016 The annual accounts for 2016 were discussed at the AGM with no major issues or concerns raised by the assembled people. However, a formal vote to approve them was not taken (who was Chairing the meeting?...) The PCC have agreed to accept them as if approved without recourse to a further extraordinary meeting to do so, in the belief that that was the mind of those who were at the AGM. If anyone has any concerns about that please let Jonathan know.
