Several weeks ago, actually, before Advent, Deacon John delivered a homily he referenced the Precepts of the Catholic Church. Deacon John, being the trickster that he is and wanting to prove a point asked if anyone could recite the seven Precepts of the Catholic Church. There was pretty much just dead silence, a few nervous laughs, until he broke the tension by saying, "Good, because there are only 5 precepts. The Precepts are the absolute minimums that the we, as Catholic Christians, are to obey. The very minimums in the spirit of prayer and moral effort, in growth of love of God and of our neighbor. As a reminder, the Precepts are: 1. "You shall attend Mass on Sundays and on holy days of obligation and rest from servile labor." 2. "You shall confess your sins at least once a year." 3. "You shall receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist at least during the Easter Season." 4. "You shall observe the days of fasting and abstinence established by the Church." 5. "You shall help provide for the needs of the Church." ( F rom the "Catechism of the Catholic Church; Second Edition; 1994. ) Over the next several weeks we will look at each Precept individually. For now, remember that these are the minimum requirements and willfully and knowingly ignoring the Precepts is a grave matter. I'm not presenting this information to try to use it as a "big stick." Deacon John's premise in his homily is that maybe we don't know and understand our faith as well as we should. We all have the part down that God loves us beyond all measure, that God forgives us if we ask. But what about our "duty" to God and to the Church? That's what will follow in the coming weeks. Some of the round tables from the REC have gone missing. If you happened to have borrowed these tables for an event, please return them to the REC as soon as possible. Thank you! The Diocese of Davenport will be mailing contribution statements to those who donated to the Annual Diocesan Appeal in 2017. A separate contribution statement will also be mailed to those who donated to the Catholic Foundation/Seminarian Appeal in 2017. If you donated to both the Diocese and the Foundation, you will receive two statements. The statements will be mailed January 25 and marked as important on the envelope. If you have questions regarding your contributions contact the Diocese: 563-324-1911.

NEW "LIFE" RESOLUTION Studies show that of those who make New Years resolutions, only eight percent keep them. Eight percent. Because of that, now more than ever, many aren't even making New Years resolutions. "If I'm going to fail, why even try?" Sound familiar? So, instead of a New Years resolution, I want you to make a "Life" Resolution. A resolution that I believe every Catholic should make and maintain throughout the joys and struggles of their life: Resolve to walk with a saint. The saints are closer to God than we are - they're in Heaven. You and I are hopefully on our way, but we need help to get there. The stories, examples, friendship, and prayers of these holy men and women are the help we need. God knows that. It's why He gave them to us in the first-place. Saints of God, pray for us. Friends, be confident in Christ's mercy and love. ~ Jon Leonetti Last Christmas the parish p a r t i c i p a t e d i n t h e C h r i s t m a s S H A R E program, and this week we received thank you notes T hank you for the gifts and food.
